Powerful typhoon slams China

1.3 million evacuated as typhoon slams China - Saomai is most powerful storm to hit country in 5 decades; 2 people dead
Associated Press

BEIJING - The most powerful typhoon to hit China in five decades slammed into its southeastern coast Thursday, destroying hundreds of homes and battering the region with rain and wind after more than 1.3 million people were evacuated, state media reported. At least two people were killed. Typhoon Saomai was the eighth major storm to strike China in this summer’s unusually violent typhoon season. Torrential rains were forecast in the next three days as it churned inland across crowded areas where Tropical Storm Bilis killed more than 600 people last month. Saomai, with winds up to 135 mph, made landfall at the town of Mazhan in coastal Zhejiang province at 5:25 p.m. and was moving northwest at 12 mph, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing weather officials. A New Vaccine for Girls, but Should It Be Compulsory?

By RONI RABIN-Essay NY Times

Around the time report cards came home this spring, federal health officials approved another new vaccine to add to the ever-growing list of recommended childhood shots — this one for girls and women only, from 9 to 26, to protect them from genital warts and cervical cancer. One of my own daughters, who just turned 9, would be a candidate for this vaccine, so I’ve been mulling this over. A shot that protects against cancer sounds like a great idea, at first. States may choose to make it mandatory, though the cost for them to do so would be prohibitive. But let’s think carefully before requiring young girls to get this vaccine, which protects against a sexually transmitted virus, in order to go to school. This isn’t polio or measles, diseases that are easily transmitted through casual contact. Infection with this virus requires intimate contact, of the kind that doesn’t occur in classrooms. Besides, we already know how to prevent cervical cancer in this country, and we’ve done a darn good job of it. In the war against cancer, the battle against cervical cancer has been a success story. Why, then, did federal health officials recommend the inoculation of about 30 million American girls and young women against the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that in rare cases leads to cervical cancer?

Vaccine supporters say that some 3,700 American women die of cervical cancer each year, and close to 10,000 cases are diagnosed. Cervical cancer has a relatively high survival rate, but every death is tragic and treatment can rob women of their fertility. Still, you have to see the numbers in context. Cervical cancer deaths have been dropping consistently in the United States — and have been for decades. Cervical cancer has gone from being one of the top killers of American women to not even being on the top 10 list. This year cervical cancer will represent just 1 percent of the 679,510 new cancer cases and 1 percent of the 273,560 anticipated cancer deaths among American women. By contrast, some 40,970 women will die of breast cancer and 72,130 will die of lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society Web site, “Between 1955 and 1992, the number of cervical cancer deaths in the United States dropped by 74 percent.” Think about it: 74 percent.

The number of cases diagnosed each year and the number of deaths per year have continued to drop, even though the population is growing. From 1997 to 2003, the number of cervical cancers in the United States dropped by 4.5 percent each year, while the number of deaths dropped by 3.8 percent each year, according to a government Web site that tracks cancer trends, called SEER or Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/cervix.html). This, while many other cancers are on the rise. If current trends continue, by the time my 9-year-old daughter is 48, the median age when cervical cancer is diagnosed, there will be only a few thousand cases of the cancer in women, and about 1,000 deaths or fewer each year, even without the vaccine.

Sugary drinks are piling on the pounds

A single can of soda a day can add 15 up to pounds a year, report says - Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - Americans have sipped their way to fatness by drinking far more soda and other sugary drinks over the last four decades, a new scientific review concludes. An extra can of soda a day can pile on 15 pounds (7 kilograms) in a single year, and the evidence strongly suggests that this sort of increased consumption is a key reason that more people have gained weight, the researchers say. SCLC to play global peacekeeping role

By George E. Curry NNPA Editor-in-Chief

DAYTON, Ohio (NNPA)- With a conflict resolution center already established in Israel and a direct line of communication to Hamas-one of Israel's most ardent foes-SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) President Charles W. Steele Jr. said Dr. Martin Luther King's old organization is poised to play a key role in defusing tensions around the world. "In a world of prejudice, violence, poverty and ignorance, the message of SCLC is to teach and apply Martin Luther King Jr.'s principles of non-violence and conflict resolution," Steele said. One of SCLC's goals, he said, is, "to bring peace, security and hope to the afflicted people in the South, throughout America and around the world."

Steele said that mission was crystallized in a conversation he had in December 2004 with Prime Minister Aerial Sharon and his chief of staff. "I was in Israel talking with the chief of staff and the prime minister and he [the chief of staff] said, "You all can bring about world peace. You all have been through the Trans-Atlantic African slave trade and you got lynched, you were murdered, your women were raped and killed, but you didn't turn out to be terrorists. You didn't strap yourselves with a bomb, you don't have any blood on your hands." I said, "What are you saying Mr. Chief of Staff to the prime minister?' He said, 'Charles, what I am saying is you can stop the war.'" Steele said representatives of Hamas have recently gotten in touch with him, urging SCLC to help diffuse tension in the Middle East. And, Steele said he plans to do just that.

The answer to curbing violence in the U.S. and internationally, Steele said, is the establishment of SCLC Martin Luther King Jr. Conflict Resolution Centers. SCLC has established two centers, one in Dayton, Ohio, the home of Board Chairman Raleigh Trammell, and one in Dimona, Israel, the home of African Hebrew Israelites. A third center is expected to be opened in Ivrea, Italy later this year. The goal is to establish 50 centers in the U.S. and 10 abroad by 2010, Steele said.

Stuck on meds

Some can't quit antidepressants-Syndrome makes it impossible for some patients to wean off medication
Associated Press

When Gina O’Brien decided she no longer needed drugs to quell her anxiety and panic attacks, she followed doctor’s orders by slowly tapering her dose of the antidepressant Paxil. The gradual withdrawal was supposed to prevent unpleasant symptoms that can result from stopping antidepressants cold turkey. But it didn’t work. “I felt so sick that I couldn’t get off my couch,” O’Brien said. “I couldn’t stop crying.” Overwhelmed by nausea and uncontrollable crying, she felt she had no choice but to start taking the pills again. More than a year later she still takes Paxil, and expects to be on it for the rest of her life. In the almost two decades since Prozac — the first of the antidepressants known as SRIs, or serotonin reuptake inhibitors — hit the market, many patients have reported extreme reactions to discontinuing the drugs. Two of the best-selling antidepressants — Effexor and Paxil — have prompted so many complaints that many doctors avoid prescribing them altogether. See: Some can't stop antidepressants

Let Food Be Thy Medicine

What Pharmaceutical "Drug Dealers" don't want you to know by Dr. Baruch

According to a new report published in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association, people who ate alow-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their bloodsugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet. Participants say the vegan diet was easier to follow than most because they did not measure portions or count calories. Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, which helped conduct the study said, "I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs." After 22 weeks on the diet, 43 percent of those on the vegan diet and 26 percent of those on the standard diet were either able to stop takingsome of their drugs such as insulin or glucose-control medications, or were able to lower the doses. In other words, food really can be your medicine. The vegan dieters lost 14 pounds on average while the diabetes association dieters lost 6.8 pounds. An important level of glucose control called A1c fell by 1.23 points in the vegan group and by 0.38 in the group on the standard diet. A1c gives a measure of how well-controlled blood sugar has been over the preceding three months. Small changes made now can make a BIG difference later, when it comes to educating your children and teaching them to steer clear of type-2diabetes.

Heatwave causes rolling blackouts in U.S.

by Keymah B. N. Aharon

The heat wave is moving across the country from California to New York. It has been more than two weeks of triple-digit temperatures that killed at least 136 people and caused power failures. Temperatures hit or hovered near 100 degrees Fahrenheit in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, with hotter weather forecast for Wednesday. Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago were sweating it out in equally stifling temperatures. The heat wave also cause a major demand on many cities power systems and caused power to be shut off for thousands of residents. The names may change but the players stay the same

What do multinational corporations do once their dirty record gets around and people start seeing them for what they are? They change their names, of course.
By Laviyah E. Nahum (KNN Staff)

Philip Morris is leading the way. What have they done in response to years of bad exposure for knowingly selling dangerous products? Decided to sell healthier products? Stopped marketing to and addicting kids? No, they changed their name to Altria and picked a new logo, hoping that when people see Altria has made their food, they won't realize their money is going into the pockets of the same people who told us all that cigarettes are safe and nicotine is not addictive. Recently, Philip Morris spent $250 million to gloss over their image. The campaign highlighted the company's charitable contributions and downplayed the deadly and addictive tobacco products that built the company. Well, luckily the people aren't that easily fooled. All that money spent and the Reputation Institute ranks Philip Morris second to last in public opinion. Rightly so, because tobacco still makes up 61.2% of the company's $90 billion income. In case you were wondering what Altria means: "Altria, as you know, means nothing, and can't be any derivative of altus [meaning 'high'] --altr-- is a nonexistent stem. But it sounds pretty good, doesn't it? And has no suggestion at all of emphysema or lung cancer," according to a Latin Professor quoted by TheStreet.com.Yes, it seems Altria isn't synonymous with lung cancer and emphysema in people's minds the way Philip Morris is. But don't worry, to all of us who know what they've done, they'll always be Philip Morris. A reputation like their's can't be lost with a new name. Who else is doing it? Refugees taught how to eat American food

By Ian Brimacombe BBC News, Chicago

In a classroom on Chicago's north side, nutritionist Bindi Desai points at a sign of an obese man holding a hamburger with a pained expression on his face.

"This guy is overweight," she says, explaining that this is because he eats too much fast food and drinks cola. "And guess what happens?" she asks. "Inside his body there are lots of problems." At a table, a dozen or so refugees - most of them from Africa - sit and nod. Some smile and chat among themselves. They appear to get the picture. This workshop on how to eat American food responsibly is part of an Illinois state-funded programme to improve the nutrition of refugees who are being re-settled in the land of plenty. "First we are most concerned about whether they will understand how to eat American food," says Shana Willis, with the non-profit refugee resettlement agency Heartland, one of the project co-ordinators. "They did not only not understand how to eat American food, but they went immediately to the junk food and it was then that we realised, this is going to have a much more important impact than we anticipated." Culture shock - One of the major challenges for organisers is to change the way the refugees think about food. Many of the new arrivals suffered from malnutrition and came from places where food was scarce. Some want to make up for a lifetime in which they were denied meat. Others gravitate towards the fizzy orange drink and crisps, believing they are a great source of vitamins. And there is plain culture shock. See: Refugees taught how to eat American food

Violent crime rates on the rise U.S.

FBI statistics show murders in the U.S. jumped 4.8 percent last year
By Martin Savidge-NBC News

ATLANTA - In Phoenix, they're terrorized by not one but two serial killers. In Boston, homicides are at a 10-year high. And with 14 murders since July 1, the nation's capital has declared a crime emergency. The latest preliminary FBI statistics show murders in the U.S. jumped 4.8 percent last year while overall violent crime was up 2.5 percent. And in many communities the upsurge is attributed to juveniles. "We have a youth problem," says St. Paul, Minn., Police Chief John Harrington. In St. Paul, where murders are up 20 percent, Harrington is seeing an increasing number of criminal kids. "We are seeing them out on the streets later and later at night, and they are themselves into more and more difficulties," he says. In Washington's upscale Georgetown area last weekend, a British man died after his throat was slashed. Among the arrested: a 15-year-old. "Juvenile arrests are up 13.2 percent over last year," Washington Police Chief Charles Ramsey says. Crime experts say America has been distracted by the war on terror. "A lot of the resources devoted have been shifted over from hometown security to homeland security," says James Fox, a criminologist with Northeastern University. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino agrees. "What happened is a lot of those community groups that we used to have don't exist today because the funding is not there," Menino says. Experts say the solution is to return to what worked in the 1990s when crime rates plummeted. "We need to go back to the hard work of crime control, cops and crime prevention, youth programs," Menino says. "They work, but it takes time and money." As one law enforcement analyst put it, "Either we pay for programs now or pay for victims later."

More than 60 percent of U.S. in drought

By JAMES MacPHERSON, Associated Press Writer

STEELE, N.D. - More than 60 percent of the United States now has abnormally dry or drought conditions, stretching from Georgia to Arizona and across the north through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin, said Mark Svoboda, a climatologist for the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. An area stretching from south central North Dakota to central South Dakota is the most drought-stricken region in the nation, Svoboda said. "It's the epicenter," he said. "It's just like a wasteland in north central South Dakota." See Full Story: More than 60 percent of U.S. in drought

Dr. Baruch's Plantroleum in the news

A Restaurant Problem Becomes a Solution - New York Times

THE quest for secondhand fryer oil to use as a motor fuel sometimes turns on the question of whom you know. But as some restaurant owners and managers have discovered, it is also a question of who you are and what you do for a living. Take David Selig, the 41-year-old owner of five restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Cooking flash-fried rice balls, lotus-root chips and vegetarian meatballs, his kitchens produce as much as 70 gallons of waste oil each week — sometimes more than twice the amount needed to run the Dodge Sprinter diesel van that Mr. Selig uses in his restaurant and catering businesses....

Baruch Ben-Yehudah, who runs Everlasting Life, a health food restaurant in Capitol Heights, Md., fills his 1991 Mercedes-Benz with oil that had been used to fry tofu, potatoes and vegetable patties. “It’s not just the money,” he said. “I did it because I saw what we were doing to the environment and did not want my children to see their father contributing to the problem.” And he added: “I believe in being energy independent. I do not want to give someone else power over my life.” Mr. Ben-Yehudah seems to have converted more than his car when he installed a kit from Greasel.com, which has since changed its name to Golden Fuel Systems. He became so enthusiastic about vegetable oil that he started a company, Plantroleum.com, to install conversion kits.

As he sees it, even paying full price for new vegetable oil is better than buying fossil fuel. “If I don’t have enough filtered used oil, I’ll go out and buy new oil for my car,” he said. “I can get vegetable oil for $2.45 a gallon, and diesel fuel goes for $3.09 around here — and that’s not counting the additional cost of what it does to the environment. “Vegetable oil is the perfect solution,” he added. “It’s renewable and unending.” See: Green Tech: A Restaurant Problem Becomes a Solution

California-Killer heat wave overwhelms coroners’ offices

Death toll at 132 in California, weather killing hundreds of livestock - Associated Press

FRESNO, Calif. - At least 132 deaths are likely linked to a nearly two-week heat wave in California, according to county coroner's offices. The big jump in the death count came primarily from Los Angeles County and the Central Valley counties of Merced and Stanislaus, where coroners struggled to keep up. The vast majority of those deaths statewide have been elderly people whose bodies don't cope as well in the heat. In Fresno County’s morgue, the walk-in freezer was stuffed with bodies, with some piled on top of others, said Coroner Loralee Cervantes. With limited air conditioning, employees worked in sweltering heat as they investigated at least 22 possible heat-related deaths. “It’s never been like this in my years here,” Cervantes said. “This is really tragic.” See: Calif. heat toll overwhelms coroners

Soul Veg opens in Australia

Ahtur Ammioz-KNN Staff

The Soulveg team often dreamed of starting a business which would show people how good vegetarian food could be. After a visit to the US in 2004, they decided it was time to embark on a journey around the world which would allow them to learn all of the skills they would need in order to bring the dream into fruition. The team commenced rigorous, full-time training in early 2005, under the Chefs of the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, a holistic community, based in Dimona, Israel which established the Soul Vegetarian Restaurant, the largest vegan restaurant chain in the world, with several locations including Chicago, Atlanta, Florida, Texas, California, Washington, St. Croix, Ghana, South Africa, London and Israel. Their training took them around the world visiting places including Thailand, Germany, Israel, Los Angeles, Chicago and Texas, where they learned a multitude of tried and true recipes, culinary techniques and nutritional facts, as well as scientific and Biblical explanations of vegetarianism and holistic agricultural practises.

Darah Morris and his wife Yahvinah, have pledged their time to raising awareness of healthy alternatives to the people of Australia, utilising the skills they learned in their community.
Darah, being of Aboriginal descent, has particular interest in increasing the health of the Indigenous communities of Australia through improved diet. He plans to develop a seminar series to teach his people simple techniques that can be used to improve diet and overall Aboriginal health throughout Australia. Darah, when not busy minding the business, spends time studying Anthropology and Australian Indigenous Issues, and hopes to use his knowledge one day to help all people. Please check out the new Soul Vegetarian Websites http://www.soulveg.com.au/index.php and http://www.soulvegetarian.com/ and Everlasting Life Health Complex .

Hebrew Israelites Present Vehicle Powered By Vegetable Oil To Iraeli Foreign Ministry

"In the beginning man was given an intuitive understanding. Therefore man in his right mind possesses an instinctive understanding as to why he should not pollute the water he must drink, the air he must breathe and the food he must eat. Thus through the active principle of the GOD-Mind, man was able to maintain the ecological order and harmony of the creation and insure his existence in that order. He became the earths caretaker, its watchman." - Ben Ammi- Imitation of Life

JERUSALEM, -Tired of escalating fuel prices? Is filling up at the station leaving you deflated? The answer to your dilemma – run your automobile on vegetable oil. That is what the Hebrew Israelites are proposing. Dr. Baruch Ben Yehudah of the community’s Washington, D.C.-based company, Plantroleum, is visiting Dimona to demonstrate the viability of this technology. The community envisions a partnership between Plantroleum and MASHAV, the Israel Organization for International Cooperation and Development to assist energy strapped countries and enhance Israel’s image abroad.
Last week Dr Baruch traveled to the Village of Peace in Dimona to direct a team comprised of community members with no prior experience with the technology in the conversion of a diesel powered vehicle to run on vegetable oil. Within forty-eight hours the team converted an ordinary, privately owned vehicle to run on vegetable oil with parts purchased locally in order to highlight the potential advantages of Israel promoting the technology internationally. The vehicle, a 1996 Volkswagen diesel powered van, will be driven from Dimona to MASHAV offices in Jerusalem to meet Ambassador Haim D'von, the head of MASHAV on Tuesday. “With modifications to the fuel delivery system of diesel engines, a Vegetable Oil Fuel System can be added to facilitate powering mechanically injected diesel vehicles on vegetable oil,” states Dr Baruch. The advantages of this type of fuel includes it is cleaner and safer burning, and a significantly less expensive alternative to petroleum-based fuel.” See Complete Article: http://www.plantroleum.com/

It's dangerous to be a young male worldwide

Lifestyle factors linked to higher death rates, researchers say
Reuters News Service

LONDON - Young men worldwide have higher death rates than women but the causes vary according to their age and where they live, researchers said on Tuesday. Accidents and suicide are the leading killers in men aged 15 to 34, while deaths from illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and chronic liver disease rise sharply in 35-44-year-olds. “In every country there is an excess of male deaths due to potentially avoidable reasons. The main causes of death are those that are more or less directly attributable to lifestyle and risk taking,” said Alan White of Leeds Metropolitan University in England. Dimona's House of Life - Birthing a New Generation of Children

Source: www.kingdomofyah.com

The House of Life, the natural child birthing center founded by the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, is the crown jewel of this successful system, a thriving prototype setting a new standard in wellness. Since its establishment in 1971, over 700 children have been delivered without the use of drugs or invasive surgical procedures. Undoubtedly, the care program of the House of Life, is the most advanced in the world, providing care for both the newborn and the mother according to Biblical guidelines. In contrast to modern trends, the emphasis at the House of Life is clearly upon providing a divine, wholesome and nurturing atmosphere for birth and aftercare instead of financial concerns and stress. Experienced midwives offer insightful instruction through a pre-delivery program that ultimately alleviates much of the discomfort normally associated with delivery.

At the time of birth, the atmosphere is one of holiness. Immediately outside the birthing area, Priests read specific prayers that both strengthen and calm the mother, and create a sacred environment for the newborn infant. Afterward, the mother is given a period of time during which she is not to engage in any activities other than the care and nurturing of the newborn child. According to Biblical guidelines this period is forty (40) days following the birth of a male child, and eighty (80) days following the birth of a female, to insure the mother's complete recovery. (Leviticus 12:2-5) She spends the first two weeks in the House of Life where her meals are prepared and served, her laundry and other tasks are done for her, while the mother focuses exclusively on bonding with the new baby and regaining her strength. Compare this to medical insurance today, which in most cases covers one day in the hospital before sending the mother home to care not only for herself and the new child, but also for her existing family. In many instances, in addition to taking care of her family, the new mother must also return to work immediately.

In the House of Life, all meals are completely vegan, prepared with organic fruits and vegetables grown by the Community to ensure the best possible nutrients are provided to the mother. All of this is provided at an average cost of one hundred dollars ($100) for the entire two weeks in the House of Life. Compare this to the average cost of having a baby in an American hospital today, which ranges from eight thousand ($8,000) to twenty thousand ($20,000) dollars, for a one or two-day stay. Clearly the House of Life has set a new standard in pre-, delivery and post-natal care... Seeking in all ways, to be in accordance with the Will and the Plan of God.
