Dining Out: Soul Vegetarian South

KNN Staff

PETA pal John Feldmann, lead singer of the punk band Goldfinger, raves: “Soul Vegetarian has the most awesome vegan lasagna and vegan gyro sandwiches ever!”John’s not the only one singing the praises of the Soul Vegetarian restaurants. PETA’s elephant specialist, Jane Garrison, says, “When you walk into Soul Vegetarian South, the aroma of the food carries you (running) down the hall to the dining room. The people who run the restaurant always greet you as if you are entering their home—after the second visit, we were greeted with hugs!“My favorite dish is the ‘bar-b-que twist’—absolutely incredible fib ‘ribs.’ The texture is amazing—not too mushy and not too tough. The homemade sauce is so delicious, you will find yourself trying to lick every bit off your fork! This dish is served with the best vegan potato salad I have ever had and some yummy Southern-style greens.

Every meal at Soul Vegetarian for me is followed by my favorite dessert: sweet potato pie topped with vegan vanilla ‘ice cream.’ The crust of the pie is so sweet and delicious, you feel like you are eating a pie that has been placed on a cookie!“Other amazing dishes include the lasagna, baked tofu, pasta casserole, divine protein salad (mock chicken salad)—and anything else they are serving as the special for the night! “The food, the people, the price: Soul Vegetarian can’t be beat!”

Philosophy: For more than a decade, Soul Vegetarian has been the place where vegetarians and nonvegetarians come to enjoy a more healthful way of eating without concern for loss of flavor or the joy of eating. Colorful and delicious dishes, exotic décor, and superb staff combine to create a completely vegan dining adventure that must be experienced to be believed. See: KingdomOfYah.com/SV.htm

Spiritual Foundation of the Chosen First Fruit

By Bikeeah B. Israel-KNN Dimona

The spiritual foundation of the CFF is rooted in the Divine Cycles of Yah. In agricultural terms, the “First Fruits” or “Harvest” of one’s labor in the field was a great blessing. The first fruit was the increase (blessing) of the farmer’s hard labor and toil in the field. Yah worked and created the heavens and the earth – the fruit of Yah’s creative life-giving spirit. This creation was termed “Genesis” or “Berasheet” in Hebrew which means “in a beginning” or a new birth of the consciousness of Yah in the minds of men.

“Rasheet” ראשית, a derivative of “Berasheet”, means choice of First Fruits indicating that Yah set into motion his choicest work. In this New World Order (new birth of the consciousness of Yah in the minds of men today), we, the Chosen First Fruit, stand as Yah’s choices work: the First Fruits of this New World Order.

IGNORANCE IS BLISSFULLY DANGEROUS, WASH OUT!!!

KNN- ST. LOUIS-Nehehmahnyah Ben Shaleak, The National Skin Therapist

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found a correlation between an ingredient found in shampoos and nervous system damage. The experiments were conducted with the brain cells of rats and they show that contact with this ingredient called methylisothiazoline, or MIT, causes neurological damage. Which products contain this chemical compound MIT? Head & Shoulders, Suave, Clairol and Pantene Hair Conditioner all contain this ingredient. Researchers are concerned that exposure to this chemical by pregnant women could put their fetus at risk for abnormal brain development. In other people, exposure could also be a factor in the development of Alzheimer's disease and other nervous system disorders.

The chemical causes these effects by preventing communication between neurons. Essentially, it slows the networking of neurons, and since the nervous system and brain function on a system of neural networks, the slowing of this network will suppress and impair the normal function of the brain and nervous system. These finding were presented December 5th at the American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting. There is an unknown danger of using brand-name personal care products. The vast majority of these products contain toxic chemical compounds like MIT that contribute to cancer, liver disorders and neurological diseases. In fact, this chemical, MIT, is just one of dozens of such chemicals that are found in personal care products.

Why are these dangerous personal care products allowed to remain on the market? Because the FDA, which is responsible for regulating these products, spends almost no time, money or effort actually investigating the safety of such products. Instead, the FDA spends the vast majority of its time approving new prescription drugs rather than protecting the public against the dangers from such drugs or personal care products like shampoos, soaps, deodorants and fragrance products. In fact, it may surprise you to learn that manufacturers can put practically any chemical they want into shampoos, even if it is a hazardous chemical listed in the RTECS database of toxicity and even if it is considered a toxic waste chemical by the EPA. The FDA allows all sorts of chemicals to be used in these products, including chemicals that are known carcinogens and that contribute to liver failure and nervous system disorders. How's that for protecting public health?

If you thought prescription drugs were dangerous, just take a look at the toxic chemicals found in personal care products used by virtually all Americans every single day. Americans bathe themselves in toxic chemicals and they do it by buying and using products made by brand name companies that have premier shelf positioning at convenience stores, grocery stores and discount clubs. One of the more curious personal care products on the market is Herbal Essences Shampoo by Clairol. Personally, I think this product is very deceptive, it's trying to exploit the word "herbal" to imply that the shampoo is healthy, even though it is primarily made with the same ingredients as other popular shampoos. The first three ingredients, for example, are: water, sodium laureth, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Big deal, huh? You can find the same three ingredients in 99-cent shampoo at Wal-Mart. Plus, the product contains all sorts of other ingredients that I personally would never allow to touch my skin (like methylchloroisothiazolinone, if you can believe there's actually a chemical with a name that long). Think the color of the shampoo is from the herbs? Think again. Three other ingredients in the shampoo are Yellow #5, Orange #4 and Violet #2.

In other words, this is a shampoo product purchased by naive consumers, in my opinion. People who really know herbs and natural products can only laugh at a product like this. Want a real shampoo? Or healthy skin care products, buy from Faithful Beauty Skin Care Products, Neem Botanicals, or Gotcha Covered Products. The bottom line to all of this, though, is that every week, it seems like we see a new announcement about some toxic chemical found in personal care products that is related to either cancer or neurological disorders. And yet week after week these products are being sold by retailers and consumed in large quantities by the American people who remain oblivious to the real damage these products are causing to their health.

Once again, the solution here is to protect yourself by learning the truth about these products and switching to products made with safe ingredients. There are safe shampoos, safe soaps, safe laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids and even deodorant products. You don't have to expose yourself to toxic chemicals to take care of personal hygiene, because whether you agree with it or not, these disease-causing chemicals are going to remain quite legal in the use of personal care products for many years to come. Why? You can bet that the manufacturers of these products will fight against any attempt to regulate or outlaw these toxic chemicals. That's because the chemicals are convenient for such manufacturers. It's much the same way in which food manufacturers use sodium nitrate in bacon and other packaged meats. It's all about their convenience rather than protecting your health. So, here's the idiot test for today: if I was standing on a street corner with a bottle of colored liquid, and I told you that liquid contained a toxic chemical that caused neurological disorders, Alzheimer's disease and birth defects, would you buy that product from me and scrub it into your scalp under warm water? Of course not. But if you're buying these popular shampoo products, that's exactly what you're doing right now. Such is the power of mechanics of evil reasoning and marketing in America.

Shooting jolts Amish country

By MARK SCOLFORO
The Associated Press

NICKEL MINES, Pa. -- The nation's third deadly school shooting in less than a week occurred Monday, and it could not have happened in a more unlikely place. After taking over a one-room schoolhouse in bucolic Amish country in Lancaster County, Charles Carl Roberts IV sent the boys and adults outside and barricaded the doors with two-by-fours. Most of the victims -- all girls -- were shot at point-blank range, after being lined up along the chalkboard, their feet bound with wire and plastic ties, authorities said. Three were killed, and at least seven were critically wounded. "This is a horrendous, horrific incident for the Amish community," state Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said. "They're solid citizens in the community. They're good people. They don't deserve ... no one deserves this." See: Shooting jolts Amish country

Childless Women Risk Poorer Health In Later Life

Submitted by Akote Ivryah - KNN Atlanta

Childless women run the risk of earlier death and poorer health in later life. A new study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) finds that not only childless women but also mothers of five or more children, teenage mothers and mothers who have children with less than an 18 month gap between births all have higher risks of death and poor health later in life. Findings are based on a study of three separate datasets of women born from 1911 onwards in Great Britain and the USA. "We already know quite of lot about the impact of a person's very early life or their socio-economic history on health and mortality in later life," explains researcher Professor Emily Grundy of the Centre for Population Studies, School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London. "But, in this study we were able to analyse the long-term health implications of a person's partnership and parenting experiences while taking into account education and other indicators of socio-economic status as well." Facts about "e. coli"

by Laviyah E. Nahum-KNN Cleveland

I have been researching the spinach situation and here's what I've found:

1. 73,000 people a year, roughly 200 people a day are affected by e. coli contamination from Beef.

2. Only 20 people have been affected by e. coli contamination from produce in the last 10 years.

3. Some news sources especially the AP are trying to make it sound like there have been 20 e. coli outbreaks from produce in the last five years. Their wording is very clever. You have to read carefully to see that it is only 20 individual cases. This is hardly worth mentioning when you consider that around 200 people a day are affected by e. coli from Beef.

4. However this is not all bad, as now farmers will be more careful to not wash produce with water that could be contaminated by cattle feces.

5. Don't buy produce from big farms that pre-package produce if you can buy from a farmer's market instead.

6. Don't buy from farms that have livestock. Small produce farmers at farmer's markets often just grow vegetables and fruits, and don't have animals.

U.S. loosens airline security rules

OK as of Tuesday: toiletries in small bags, drinks bought in secure areas-MSNBC News

WASHINGTON - The U.S. government is partially lifting the ban against carrying liquids, gels and aerosols onto airliners that was instituted after a bomb plot was foiled last August, officials said Monday. “We now know enough to say that a total ban is no longer needed from a security point of view,” said Kip Hawley, head of the Transportation Security Administration, at a news conference at Reagan National Airport. Under the new rules, travelers may carry:

-Drinks and other items purchased in the secure areas of the airport.
-Travel-size toiletry containers of 3 ounces (90 ml) or less that are placed in a “quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag.”
-That includes items like lip gloss and hand lotion. The bags will be screened and returned if they are cleared.

Hawley called the new procedures a “common sense” approach that would maintain a high level of security at airports but ease conditions for passengers. “We have also taken additional security measures throughout the airport that make us comfortable allowing passengers to bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure area onboard,” he said. Experts: Junk culture is killing childhood

Video games, academic pressures contribute to rise in behavioral problems-Reuters News Service

LONDON - Britain’s children are being poisoned by a “junk culture” of processed food, computer games and over-competitive education, an influential group of authors and experts warned on Tuesday. In an open letter to the Daily Telegraph, 110 teachers, psychologists and children’s authors — including the internationally acclaimed Philip Pullman and Penelope Leach, a leading childcare expert — called on the government to act now to prevent childhood being killed off altogether. Forced “to act and dress like mini-adults”, children are becoming increasingly depressed and experiencing growing levels of behavioral and developmental problems, they said. Why the future doesn't need us.

Our most powerful 21st-century technologies - robotics, genetic engineering, and nanotech - are threatening to make humans an endangered species.
By Bill Joy-WIRED magazine

From the moment I became involved in the creation of new technologies, their ethical dimensions have concerned me, but it was only in the autumn of 1998 that I became anxiously aware of how great are the dangers facing us in the 21st century. First let us postulate that the computer scientists succeed in developing intelligent machines that can do all things better than human beings can do them. In that case presumably all work will be done by vast, highly organized systems of machines and no human effort will be necessary. Either of two cases might occur. The machines might be permitted to make all of their own decisions without human oversight, or else human control over the machines might be retained.

If the machines are permitted to make all their own decisions, we can't make any conjectures as to the results, because it is impossible to guess how such machines might behave. We only point out that the fate of the human race would be at the mercy of the machines. It might be argued that the human race would never be foolish enough to hand over all the power to the machines. But we are suggesting neither that the human race would voluntarily turn power over to the machines nor that the machines would willfully seize power. Woman slain, fetus cut from her womb

Police detain a 26-year-old woman, described only as a person of interest
Associated Press

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - The body of a woman who apparently had a fetus cut from her womb was found in a vacant lot, and police said Friday they had captured a woman in the case. State police said a 26-year-old woman, whom they described as a person of interest, had buried a baby Thursday that she said had been stillborn, East St. Louis Police Chief James Mister told the Belleville News-Democrat. An autopsy will be performed on the baby Friday to determine if it was removed from the dead woman's womb, Mister said. The East St. Louis case is the area's second recent case involving babies. A 36-year-old woman is accused of slashing a young mother's throat and kidnapping her baby on Sept. 15. The baby was found in good condition four days later. Another woman is to stand trial next April in the abduction of an unborn girl taken from the womb of Bobbie Jo Stinnett in December 2004 in Skidmore, Mo. The baby survived. Music lessons help young child memories

Submitted by Tovleeyah Baht Israel
Article by Jennifer Kwan (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) - Parents who spend time and money to teach their children music, take heart -- a new Canadian study shows young children who take music lessons have better memories than their nonmusical peers. The study, to be published in the online edition of the journal Brain on Wednesday, showed that after one year of musical training, children performed better in a memory test than those who did not take music classes. "(The research) tells us that if you take music lessons your brain is getting wired up differently than if you don't take music lessons," Laurel Trainor, professor of psychology, neuroscience and behavior at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, told Reuters. This is the first study to show that brain responses in young, musically trained and untrained children change differently over the course of a year," said Trainor who led the study. Over a year they took four measurements in two groups of children aged between four and six -- those taking music lessons and those taking no musical training outside school -- and found developmental changes over periods as short as four months.

The children completed a music test in which they were asked to discriminate between harmonies, rhythms and melodies, and a memory test in which they had to listen to a series of numbers, remember them and repeat them back. Trainor said while previous studies have shown that older children given music lessons had greater improvements in IQ scores than children given drama lessons, this is the first study to identify these effects in brain-based measurements in young children. She said it was not that surprising that children studying music improved in musical listening skills more than children not studying music. "On the other hand, it is very interesting that the children taking music lessons improved more over the year on general memory skills that are correlated with nonmusicalabilities such as literacy, verbal memory, visiospatial processing, mathematics and IQ," she said.

E. coli outbreak spreads from tainted spinach

FOOD: Illnesses are reported in 19 states; outbreak is linked to a California company.
BY ANDREW BRIDGES
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON - A California natural foods company was linked Friday to a nationwide E. coli outbreak that has killed one person and sickened almost 100 others. Supermarkets across the country pulled spinach from shelves, and consumers tossed out the leafy green. Food and Drug Administration officials said that they had received reports of illness in 19 states including Minnesota and Wisconsin. The outbreak was traced to Natural Selection Foods, based in San Juan Bautista, Calif., and the company has voluntarily recalled products containing spinach. FDA officials stressed that the bacteria had not been isolated in products sold by Natural Selection Foods but that the link was established by patient accounts of what they had eaten before becoming ill. An investigation was continuing. "It is possible that the recall and the information will extend beyond Natural Selection Foods and involve other brands and other companies, at other dates," said Dr. David Acheson, the chief medical officer with the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Marriage and Divorce in America

The statistics are alarming
KNN Staff

In 2004, 784 marriage licenses were issued in Clark County while 747 marriages were terminated, a 95% failure ratio. It is stunningly sad that for nearly every marriage license issued, a marriage is terminated in Clark County. No one wins in a divorce. Every family member is affected in a number of different ways. One third of all children are born out of wedlock, and 35 million have seen their parents divorce since 1970. Compared to children from intact families, children from broken homes are . . . 5 times more likely to live in poverty, 3 times more likely to be expelled from school, 12 times more likely to be jailed. Children from fatherless homes are . . .4 times more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, 2-3 times more likely to experience physical and emotional health problems
2 times more likely to drop out of school, 5-10 times more likely to experience sexual activity and teen pregnancy.

"The debate about God and wealth is big and it's getting bigger," says David Van Biema, co-author of this week's cover story in Time magazine titled "Does God Want You to Be Rich?" Van Biema says the debate is being propelled, at least in part, by Joel Osteen's book, 'Your Best Life Now.' "That book really took the whole question of what's known as prosperity gospel out of a little subculture of evangelicalism and put it out there for everybody," he says. Group pushes cervical cancer vaccine for 6th grade girls

By DAN BEWLEY

LANSING -- A bipartisan group of female state lawmakers is behind a bill that would require all sixth grade girls to be vaccinated in an effort to fight cervical cancer. The vaccine, called Gardasil, prevents infections from some strains of the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus, which has been found to cause cervical cancer and genital warts. If passed, the bill would be the first of its kind in the country. The Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine in June for girls at least nine years old. Sherry Miedema is one mother who opposed the legislation. "I'm happy to have the experts make recommendations but then leave it up to the parents to make the choice," Miedema said. "I just feel each year there are more things introduced telling us parents what to do with and for our children, and I'm getting a little weary of it."

Sen. Beverly Hammerstrom (R-Monroe County) supports the legislation. "The test that the FDA has done has proven to be so fantastic that everybody is really excited, and they are going to prove safe over time," Hammerstrom said. The American Cancer Society estimates 9,700 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2006, with 3,700 fatal cases. Miedema said cervical cancer in Michigan is on the decline, citing a 48 percent decline in the past 12 years, compared to a 33 percent drop nationwide. She said the vaccine should not replace good parenting. "I feel this particular one we can teach the kids to abstain from pre-marital sex rather than give them a band-aid for something they've done after the fact," Miedema said. The bill, as with other school-required vaccines, has a provision allowing parents to opt out for medical, moral or philosophical reasons. The bill's supporters are hoping it passes the senate before lawmakers break later this month.

Gore speaks on Gobal Warming

KNN-Video

According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases – primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The heat-trapping property of these gases is undisputed although uncertainties exist about exactly how earth’s climate responds to them. Go to the Emissions section for much more on greenhouse gases.

Experts Warn of Dangers to Kids from Falling TVs
By Tovleeyah B. Israel-KNN Staff

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is sounding the alarm about an increase in childhood injuries caused by falling television sets and other furniture. TV and furniture "tip-over" accidents normally cause about five deaths a year, according to statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. But so far this year there have been 10 children killed nationwide. Kristine Biggie, a trauma nurse at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, says her emergency room sees several serious cases a year: "Think how heavy a TV is when you lift it up, or a bookcase that can fall on them. It can cause severe crushing injuries, like severe brain damage, broken bones, internal organ injuries." She urges parents to put heavy TVs on low, well-built furniture, and to secure the cords and bolt rickety furniture to the wall so it can't topple over. And, she adds, make sure inviting toys aren't left on top of the TV, which could entice a young child to climb on top. (Original article written by KYW's Lynne Adkins)

Where you live can decide how long you live

Differences are so extreme it's as if there are ‘eight Americas,’ report says-Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Where you live, combined with race and income, plays a huge role in the nation's health disparities, differences so stark that a report issued Monday contends it's as if there are eight separate Americas instead of one. Murray analyzed mortality data between 1982 and 2001 by county, race, gender and income. He found some distinct groupings that he named the "eight Americas:"

-Asian-Americans, average per capita income of $21,566, have a life expectancy of 84.9 years.
-Northland low-income rural whites, $17,758, 79 years.
-Middle America (mostly white), $24,640, 77.9 years.
-Low income whites in Appalachia, Mississippi Valley, $16,390, 75 years.
-Western American Indians, $10,029, 72.7 years.
-Black Middle America, $15,412, 72.9 years.
-Southern low-income rural blacks, $10,463, 71.2 years.
-High-risk urban blacks, $14,800, 71.1 years.
-Longevity disparities were most pronounced in young and middle-aged adults.

A 15-year-old urban black man was 3.8 times as likely to die before the age of 60 as an Asian-American, for example. That's key, Murray said, because this age group is left out of many government health programs that focus largely on children and the elderly. See: Where you live can decide how long you live

Special 2006 National Jerusalem Brotherhood Issue

By Keymah B. N. Aharon-KNN Cleveland

From Aug. 31st – Sept. 4th ,2006 the brothers of the African Hebrew Israelite Community held their annual International Brotherhood Conference. This year’s brotherhood conference was a remarkable event. It captured the essence and true spirit of brotherhood in the 7th realm of the Marriage. Various members of Kingdom Leadership address the brotherhood regarding the need for the brother to realize their true power and the need for the brothers to elevate to their required roles of the New World designers and definers. The speakers consisted of Sar Amiel, Sar Malahk, Prince Rham, and Prince Asiel just to name a few.

Nasik Asiel Addresses the Brotherhood

The brothers were blessed to have our mighty International Ambassador Prince Asiel address us. He spoke to the need for the brothers to conquer our fear of being who we were created to be. He told us that he could see our greatness but could we see it in ourselves. He told us that we were chosen to be the saviors and redeemers of the brothers and sisters around the world that were searching for truth. Prince Asiel’s discourse really caused the brothers to go within themselves and take an evaluation of weather we have lived up to our calling or not. He said that we were in the season of expansion in the Kingdom of Yah and the brother must make that happen. All the brothers in attendance vowed to make this happen. Prince closed by saying that all of those that stayed true to their vow would be blessed, and everyone who didn’t would not.

Sar Amiel opens conference

Sar Amiel gave a tribute to the leaders of our kingdom stating that they had “paid the price” for our sons and daughter to now be free. He further question the brother asking them, what price would we be willing to pay to never experience captivity” or “what price would our ancestors have paid to never have to have had to see a whipping or beating?” Sar Amiel told the brothers that we didn’t have the right to quit or be non-compliant. He told us that within us we have the power to manifest physical matter. Now all we have to do is to go forth and manifest that power.

Sar Malahk Speaks

Sar Malahk talked about commitment to the 1967 vision of Ben Ammi. He shared with us his personal testimony about his introduction to the Kingdom of Yah. When he heard the word of truth he moved forward and never looked back. He said that when you find the true Lord it requires demonstration; you have to do something to verify what you have found. Sar said that, “We are the ones that have been given the charge to end sickness and death on the planet.” He closed by reading the definition of unity and explaining to us how the Law of Compensation works.

Hot recipes for niche success

The cream of the nation's young entrepreneurs are seeking innovative ways to get their ideas up and running. James Dunn reports

FROM the tough competition of the Chicago restaurant industry to the communal ideal of an Israeli kibbutz might seem an unlikely path for entrepreneurial inspiration. But for Melbourne caterer Nicholas Morris, that's what it took for his big idea -- a chain of vegetarian restaurants -- to take shape.

Morris, 22, spent 2004 working in Chicago for a vegan restaurant. "I saw the effect that eating healthy food and just feeling better had on the customers. It really inspired me to think of what I could do in Australia." Morris decided to continue his world travels, researching vegetarian food along the way. "I wanted to find out what other cultures had to offer, so I travelled around the world, sampling vegetarian dishes from a lot of different countries. In 2005 I spent six months in an African Hebrew community in Israel, a community that has been vegan for 40 years. It's the world's largest vegan community, so I sought them out, to see the benefits of healthy eating first-hand, learning about health and nutrition." Armed with "hundreds of recipes and a heap of inspiration", Morris returned to Australia and set up his catering business, Soulveg, earlier this year. But opening a restaurant under that name - the first of many, he hopes - remains his ambition.

Waistlines keep expanding in 31 states

Mississippi and other poor areas weigh down the obesity list
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The gravy train — make that the sausage, biscuits and gravy train — just kept on rolling in most of America last year, with 31 states showing an increase in obesity. Mississippi continued to lead the way. An estimated 29.5 percent of adults there are considered obese. That’s an increase of 1.1 percentage points when compared with last year’s report, which is compiled by Trust for America’s Health, an advocacy group that promotes increased funding for public health programs. “Obesity now exceeds 25 percent in 13 states, which should sound some serious alarm bells,” said Dr. Jeff Levi, executive director of the advocacy group. Health officials warn that a high incidence of obesity in a particular state doesn’t mean it treats the issue less seriously than others. States have different challenges to contend with when it comes to obesity, said Dr. Janet Collins of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. See: Waistlines keep expanding in 31 states

Review: Soul Vegetarian Chicago

By Bob Condor-Chicago Tribune (Metromix.com)

Soul Vegetarian East joins two seemingly divergent cuisines. You expect soul food to taste good but maybe not be so good for you. You think vegetarian food tends to be good for you but it doesn't exactly taste good. You think wrong. Try Soul Vegetarian East. Soul Vegetarian East has been a fixture on the South Side and at area health fairs for 15 years. It is one of several restaurants run by the African Hebrew Israelite community.

The happy and healthful eating experience in a restaurant that serves the Chatham and Park Manor neighborhoods begins with a sizable basket of battered cauliflower ($3). The still-crunchy vegetables are lightly breaded without too much grease. This is followed swiftly by a thick, tomatoey vegetable soup ($2 small; $2.50 large). For now, we move on to a feast of salads, sandwiches and entrees. The green salad has romaine lettuce with sprouts, tomatoes, purple cabbage and cucumbers ($2.50 small, $3.50 large). It is enlivened by a nutty house "prince" dressing that uses fresh tahini made from sesame seeds. The carrot supreme salad ($2.50 for two scoops) is thankfully less sweet than most versions due to a hint of homemade soy mayonnaise. It goes nicely as a condiment for the green salad and other goodies on the table. Some of those goodies include two versions of grilled veggie burgers spiced with garlic, onions, paprika and seasoned salt: the sunburger ($3), made with ground sunflower seeds, and hand burger ($3) formed with lentils. Both sandwiches are dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickle and mustard on a whole-wheat bun.

The BBQ twist sandwich ($3.50) is made with a soybean seitan in steaklike form that Soul Vegetarian East makes on the premises. The "meat," slathered in a tangy barbecue sauce, is satisfyingly crisp outside and tender inside. An interesting note: The BBQ twist is so named because the seitan has some peanut butter in it. There is a nightly dinner special ($8.50). Our evening's platter contains generous portions of barbecued tofu, greens, macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables and pleasingly dense cornbread. You also get a choice of soup or salad. The tofu is firm and smoky, but the greens and macaroni are the stars. Garlicky greens are bursting with juices; the mac and cheese is al dente.

We fill out the meal with a vegetable stir-fry ($3). Soul Vegetarian East's version is above average with numerous fresh vegetables and brown rice. A bit of broth heightens the flavors. We can't resist the carob cake with tahini-nut icing ($2.25), enjoying a large and moist slice. Herbal teas, juices and sodas are available. Soul Vegetarian East asks that customers not bring alcoholic beverages. Service is quite friendly and prompt. You will feel at home. The restaurant seating and decor is comfortable if a bit drab. But it doesn't seem to stop the steady clientele or the frequent takeout orders, and shouldn't stop you.

Crime spree hits U.S. cities

Communities grapple with rise in violence
Summer crime wave hits Washington, Seattle, Indianapolis, other U.S. cities
MSNBC News

Police blotters in Seattle, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and other cities paint similarly violent pictures: After a decade of decline, violent crime is on the rise across the U.S. Assault and rape rose 2.5 percent between 2004 and 2005, according to the FBI’s latest report of national crime trends. Murder and robbery are up nearly 5 percent — the sharpest increase since 1991. Medium-sized cities of between 50,000 and 500,000 have been the bloodiest. The storm is battering Washington, a city that gained a reputation as the nation’s murder capital a decade ago. That was during the height of the crack epidemic, when predominately black neighborhoods like the one where Crowder lived became killing fields.

Now Washington is cowering under a new wave of late-night robberies and carjackings blamed mostly on youths armed with knives and guns. Last month in upscale Georgetown, assailants attacked a British man who had been volunteering for Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, slashing the man’s throat and attempting to rape his female companion. Last week, a 17-year-old girl was gunned down in southeast Washington. In her dying moments, she managed to save her infant godson by sliding him under a parked car. The attacks have incensed local officials, as well as those who have eulogized the dead. “Who would kill a man in a wheelchair?” asks Dr. Melvin G. Brown, the pastor who led Crowder’s funeral after he was killed July 8 near the apartment he shared with his mother in northwest Washington’s Shaw neighborhood. Crowder was shot seven times, his body found on the ground beside his wheelchair. Another man was critically wounded. There have been no arrests in the case. See: Crime spree hits U.S. cities

Floridians stock up on basics as Ernesto nears

Storm-wary (and weary) residents get prescriptions, food, gas
Associated Press

MIAMI - Florida residents rushed to fill their prescriptions and stood in long lines for gasoline, food and other supplies Monday as officials warned people not to wait for Tropical Storm Ernesto to become a hurricane again before taking precautions. Forecasters said Ernesto could grow back into a hurricane in the warm waters off Cuba and come ashore in South Florida as early as Tuesday night, exactly one year after Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Gulf Coast. It would be the first hurricane to hit the United States this year. See: Floridians stock up as Ernesto nears

Yeshua Pt.II Seminar Hits Cleveland

Crowned Dr. Khazriel electrified attentive Cleveland audience by KNN Staff Cleveland

Last night Dr. Khazriel delivered the "Yeshua The Hebrew Messiah or Jesus The Christian Christ?" Part 2 Seminar to an attentive Cleveland audience. The seminar dealt with the truth about Christianity, Jesus Christ, and the Bible. He shared with the audience that this was a Truth that the Dead Sea Scrolls could never unseal, the "Da Vinci" code could never reveal and the Church of Rome could never conceal. The seminar was base on the book "Yeshua The Hebrew Messiah or Jesus the Christian Christ Part 2 written by Ben Ammi.

The seminar focused on 8 major points: 1) Reclamation-The reclaiming of an ancient redemptive language and the power to define this language. 2) Redemptive-The victory of the redemptive struggle not only brings total liberation from the "Satanic forces", but also returns us back to the state of our original strength with complete compensation for all that was lost. 3)Regenerative and 4) Revival-With truth as the ultimate weapon, each victory brings greater degrees of "spiritual/intellectual regeneration" and the actualization of the "Power of the Holy Spirit". The following points were: 5) Repatriation, 6) Reparation (focusing on repair of the minds of the people not on money), 7) Reunifcation, and 8) Restoration-The restoration of the true worship of the God of Africa and the World, Yah Yisrael. Scientists decide Pluto’s no longer a planet

By Robert Roy Britt
Senior science writer

Capping years of intense debate, astronomers resolved Thursday to demote Pluto in a wholesale redefinition of planethood that is being billed as a victory of scientific reasoning over historic and cultural influences. But the decision is already being hotly debated. Officially, Pluto is no longer a planet. "Pluto is dead," said Mike Brown, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology who spoke with reporters via a teleconference while monitoring the vote. The decision also means a Pluto-sized object that Brown discovered will not be called a planet. See Article: Scientists: Pluto not a planet

Hurricane chief: Megadisaster 'is coming'

Tragedy worse than Katrina is not a question of if, but when, he says
Reuters News Service

MIAMI - If you thought the sight of the great American jazz city New Orleans flooded to the eaves — its people trapped in attics or cowering on rooftops — was the nightmare hurricane scenario, think again. Max Mayfield, director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center, says there’s plenty of potential for a storm worse than Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,339 people along the U.S. Gulf coast and caused some $80 billion in damage last August. “People think we have seen the worst. We haven’t,” Mayfield told Reuters in an interview at the fortress-like hurricane center in Florida. “I think the day is coming. I think eventually we’re going to have a very powerful hurricane in a major metropolitan area worse than what we saw in Katrina and it’s going to be a megadisaster. With lots of lost lives,” Mayfield said. See: Hurricane chief: Disaster coming

Cleveland: Collective shopping reaps bountiful harvest

All things in common approach to food shopping works by Shmerah E. Keymah-KNN Cleveland

This past week in Cleveland all of the larger household combined their collective resources and purchased their market shopping collectively. Purchasing our food as a collective gives us the benefit of making bulk purchases thereby allowing us to save money. Each family puts in $25 per week and received more food than their refrigerators can hold. We also save on gas money by having one person drive to the market to do all the shopping vs. each individual family driving to the same market to buy the same food items. "We are all buying the same stuff anyway, fruits and vegetables, it just makes sense", explained Ahk Roeel-member of the Cleveland Family Brotherhood. In today's society were individualism is the order of the day, the brothers and sisters of the Cleveland Family of the Kingdom of Yah are returning back to the basics and reaping great benefits by embracing an "all things in common" approach to day to day living.

Do you need to detox?

Nehehmahnyah Ben Shaleak,
KNN Staff Researcher/Writer

Are you overweight or tired all the time? Do you have headaches, other aches and pains, frequent colds and flu’s, constipation or digestive problems, high blood pressure, allergies or sensitivities. Do you often drink too much alcohol, drink caffeinated beverages, smoke cigarettes, use over-the-counter or recreational drugs, or eat fast, fried or refined foods?

Overweight? If you're overweight, you have more toxins in your body than a thin person because the body stores excess toxins in fat cells. But don't despair– one of the great additional benefits of detoxing is losing weight!

Tired all the time? According to noted biochemist Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., "toxicology textbooks list the first symptoms of chronic poisoning as low energy, fatigue, muscle weakness, inability to concentrate and intestinal complaints."

-Headaches? Food additives, sugar, alcohol, caffeine withdrawal, constipation, hormonal imbalance and exposure to irritants such as pollution, perfume or after-shaves are all causes of headaches that can often be relieved by detoxification.
-Other aches and pains? Holistic practitioners are finding that several forms of arthritis can be significantly relieved by a detoxification diet, plus proper supplementation. Drs. Barrie and Bennett, state, "Arthritis pain may be related to a toxic reaction to specific foods (food allergies), dehydration from inadequate intake of water, a very common problem, and bowel toxemia."

Frequent colds and flu? Frequent colds and flu are signs of a suppressed immune system. Detoxification, appropriate nutritional supplementation, improvement in diet– improved stress management and regular, but not overly strenuous exercise are part of a comprehensive plan for improving your immune system.

Constipation or digestive problems? A healthy digestive system eliminates its contents one to three times daily. If you do not have at least one bowel movement a day, or if you have flatulence or chronic indigestion, a detox program as part of a larger change of diet and awareness about food can often change those problems rapidly.

High blood pressure? James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C., authors of Prescription for Nutritional Healing recommend fasting (an ancient, but what we consider extreme, form of detox) for three to five days a month for those suffering from high blood pressure. Caution must be exercised: High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and for those who suffer from it, there are many specific guidelines in reference to over-the-counter medications, supplements, herbs, foods, and food additives that must be observed to prevent stroke and heart attack. You need to be under a doctor's care, but we encourage you to work with a holistically oriented physician who can support you in lifestyle changes that will address many of its risk factors.

Allergies or sensitive’s? By and large, conventional health care only deals with masking the symptoms of allergies and food sensitivities, rather than attempting to resolve them. Higher levels of detoxing, as well as additional immune support through nutritional supplementation, have been known to help many allergy sufferers. Allergies are, however, almost by definition, a very individualized condition.

Drink caffeinated beverages? Most Americans do. And with the stress of our society, it's hard not to. Even if you're not ready to quit for good, a spring and fall detox can give your liver a chance to rest from detoxifying all that caffeine every day, and that can have tremendous physical benefits in terms of more energy, better sleep and reduced stress which in turn can also make it possible to cut down significantly on caffeine after your detox.

Smoke cigarettes? Surely no one has to tell you they're toxic. But unless you're one of the few people who only smoke a couple at parties now and again, you've got an addiction that is not only expensive, but stinky, and truly unhealthy to others. One great way to look at this is if you can kick this habit (and you can) which is detoxifying in itself, other health improvements are going to be easy by comparison.

Eat fast foods, fried foods or refined foods? In addition to having very little, if any, nutritional value, fast foods, fried foods and refined foods have to be processed by the liver and take its energy away from other detoxification work it has to do. A low fat diet, with lots of whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables supports the liver with nutrients and easy-to-digest food. Switching to such a diet is the first step in an over-all detox program that can give you more energy, help you to lose weight and feel years younger.

If you have answered yes to any of these, you can significantly benefit from detox. Even if you haven't, detox can help you feel even better, and help you protect your health to an even greater extent.

My first sisterhood conference experience as a Zambian friend of the Community.

Editorial Columnist Herta-Malita Shikapwashya

It was an enjoyable, intellectual and pleasant experience of bonding that every sister should experience. For anyone that missed the conference, here is my experience as a first time attendee.

When the invitation to attend the sisterhood conference was extended to me by Aturah Malcah, I knew I had to attend and experience it but, I did not know what to expect. I knew some of the sisters from the St. Louis extension would be at the conference, and I also knew they would want to mingle with the other sisters that they had not seen in a while. So I wondered how I would fit in because at times, an experience of this magnitude can be overwhelming. I arrived at the Indian Resort with the St. Louis sisterhood at approximately 11pm, having stopped by the Soul Vegetarian in Chicago. We sat for a few minutes, had dinner and headed to our designated rooms. The sisters I was rooming with (Tkumah, Gavriella, and Shimriya) were extremely helpful, pleasant and patient with me. They answered my questions, and encouraged me to ask questions. Needless to say, I was well guided.

Friday morning, we proceeded to the conference room were breakfast was served. I listened to some of the sisters speak, but what caught my attention was the unity in the room. I was seated next to the sisters from the Cleveland extension and they were pleasant and talked to me even though they did not know who I was and vice versa. Our conversations were brief because we had to pay attention to the speaker. Immediately after our morning session, my sister from St. Louis, Shimriya introduced me to Aturah Yoahnah, whom I refer to as Mrs. Ambassador. At lunch time, I joined the rest of my St. Louis sisters, got our lunch and sat at our table were we talked and shared discussions. Aturah Malcah was at the table next to us and as always, she checked on us. After lunch, she introduced me to the other crown sisters as well as the elevated crown sister Aturah Yafah. The crown sisters were so pleasant and welcoming. That brief encounter with them, demonstrated why they were Crown Sisters. Their beauty shined from the inside onto the outside; little did I know there was more to their exquisiteness.

On the afternoon of free time which was for bonding, I had an opportunity of long intellectual and spiritual conversation with my Chicago sister, Tkumah. She was so pleasant to converse with. We talked about Divine marriage, my culture and the Kingdom as well as the best forward in life. We were enjoying our conversation so much that we run out of time as she had to go and practice for the sacred offering. We did exchange telephone numbers and promised to keep in touch.

As I continued to attend our scheduled sessions; I enjoyed each and every one of them, I had the opportunity to speak with Prince Asiel who closed out the session for us. It was really enlightening listening to hear him speak of how he too at one time or another served in the capacity of a woman. He was able to relate to us and that was a beautiful thing to hear, you had to be there to appreciate, understand and enjoy the lesson. It is always a pleasure to speak with the Prince no matter how brief. In fact, when you speak with him, there is never enough time and that’s how I felt about the Wisdom Hut. The highlight of my experience was the “Wisdom Hut” with all the crown sisters. I look back today and I wish I had asked the question that I wanted to ask at the time, but I did not have the guts to stand up and ask. If I had, a lot of sisters would have benefited from their answers because the “high table” was filled with so much wisdom. I was so intrigued by the level of wisdom that was shared by the crown sisters. We had a real sister to sister discussion. For those that were present will recall the discussions we had. The Wisdom Hut gave a lot to think about, re-emphasized a lot of things for me, and comforted my spirit.

I remember how Aturah Malcah gave an example about the best way to learn and understand the community and its objectives. She illustrated using two glasses, 1 with water and the other with just a little water. She said, if we come into the community knowing a lot, then there was no room left for us to learn and restore what we are being taught. She demonstrated this by pouring water into a glass that was already full of water, and the water poured onto the floor. However, if we wanted to learn and restore the knowledge, then we had to come with room for us to restore knowledge and this was the glass with no water in it. I wish we had a whole day of that session. The Wisdom Hut was able to generate avenues and gave everyone an insight of their important role as a woman, sister, and mother. What it did for me was re-emphasis my path in life. I walked away knowing that I have to work harder and stop procrastinating. To re-state some words of the wise, Achievement is “Doing something beyond what you have already mastered, in order to grow”.

I enjoyed the wisdom hut so much that I wanted it to be longer. Thank you all for such a beautiful experience and I was able to share it with the people around me. Next time, I will have a camcorder so that I can watch it at my leisure because all I can do right now, is replay it in my mind. Stay tuned, more to come

Deep-Fried Dangers Pt.1

Experts Discuss Cancer Threat Suggested by Recent Studies
Nehehmahnyah Ben-Shaleak
KNN Staff Researcher/Writer

World Health Organization began a three-day emergency meeting in Geneva to evaluate the recent discovery that certain popular starchy foods, from potato chips to bread, contain a chemical that can cause cancer.New research suggests that you may have one more reason to avoid deep-fried foods.

Never before has the agency assembled so many experts, so quickly, to evaluate food safety. "This is not just another food scare. This is an issue where we find a substance that could give cancer, in foods, and in significant amounts," Jorgen Schlundt, head of WHO's Food Safety Program, told ABCNEWS' John McKenzie. The alarms were triggered in April with the announcement that scientists in Sweden had tested more than 100 food items and discovered that potato and cereal products that were fried, oven-baked and deep-fried may contain high levels of acrylamide, a chemical used to make plastics and dyes that has caused cancer in animals. "It did come as a surprise because it has not been considered as a normal process that you would get acrylamide out of food," said Schlundt. Researchers say it's all about heat. The higher the cooking temperature, the greater the levels of acrylamide. Bread was found to contain 50 micrograms of acrylamide. Cereals, cookies and crackers, and potato chips: 160, 410 and 1,200, respectively. Too Soon to Worry? Since the Swedish study, scientists in several other European countries have tested many of these popular foods with similar results. But here in the United States, many researchers warn we don't know enough about acrylamide to start worrying. While acrylamide causes cancer in rats, there is no evidence it does the same in people. "We put all our reliance upon a rat strain to predict how we're going to respond. Sometimes they do predict it well and many times they do not," said Edward Calabrese, director of the Northeast Regional Environmental Public Health Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
