As US Reels From Latest Killings, Some Say Such Shootings Are on the RiseABC News.com
A brutal shooting spree in Alabama. A mass slaying in a nursing home on a Sunday morning. A bloody rampage at an immigration center.
As the public struggles to uncover the reasons behind the eight seemingly senseless mass murders so far this year, many researchers are working to determine whether this apparent surge in violence indicates a larger trend, and whether to expect more in the months to come.
Mark Kopta, chairman and professor in the department of psychology at the University of Evansville in Indiana, has researched extensively the country's mass killings, which he defines as attacks leading to the deaths of at least five people, including the killer's suicide.
"This is not a savory subject," Kopta said.
But, he added, it may be one that is becoming increasingly relevant to the U.S. public. In a paper to be presented at the annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association in Chicago this month, he found three incidents in the United States fitting this profile between 1930 and 1970. Three more followed over the course of the 1970s.
In the 1980s, however, there were 10 such incidents of mass murder. The 1990s had 17; and, since the new millennium began, there have been 25 such mass murders.
Six of them occurred last year. And 2009 has already topped that with eight such killings.

Maybe it is time for me to go back to Psychology but this time research Forensic Psychology rather than a Clinical Psychology.
It seems that nuff money is to be made from the disaster that has long been known to be the American Nightmare.
American has more Psychologists than any country in the world. Having a 'Shrink' is now a status symbol and the psychological contradiction being; if you do not have one nor want to see one you are in cognitive denial.
So the mass killing phenomenon! After studing Bandura the Social Learning Psychologist and others; it is clear that Psychology is about theoretical masturbation and cognitive incest. Basically the buzz from a new theoretical idea followed my the masochistic pleasure of being lambasted by contradictory theorists and then the enjoyment of the conferences and seminars to share common ground.
Where are the solutions to lunatic America and other mass killing fields on he globe?
As a former Registered Mental Nurse and later Clinical Psychologist who spent a brief spell working on a Forensic Unit in England, I am still fascinated by Crime Shows and Psychological thrillers due to my fascination with the human mind and iots capacity for evil.
As an elevated Spiritual 'Healer' I can tell you that a society which has given its citizens the permission to do anything in the name of liberal democratic rights, vulgarise capitalist individualism to the extent of the grotesque and remove all spiritually from its core educational systems, then give it Hollywood and its increasing violent shooting films and epic block-buster; then contribute to economic collapse affecting people's homes and livelihood is a formula for mass murders. Ah Lie?
Psychologist call it 'alienation' 'anomie' ' self-nihillism' etc. Spiritual Psychology deems it and anti -life force embeded in an evil socio-econimic system
Basically the core is 'putrifying' and affecting the people who are going mad en mass.
One theorist asserts Mass killings are sparked by national crises-Wars, revolutions, Severe Economic depression, other socio-psychological catastrophies; another purports Social Learning Theories of THE FRUSTRATION-AGGRESSION COMPLEX OF IMMEDIATE RELEASSE THE GUN BEING THE EXTENSION OF THE MALE PHALLUS,MANHOOD AND OVER-COMPENSATION PSYCHOLOGICAL EMASCULATION.
