NY Pushes for Mandatory AIDS Testing for the Bronx

Is Universal Testing the Answer to Bronx HIV Problem?
by Cara McDonough
Findingdulcinea.com

The New York City Department of Health wants to make HIV testing a routine part of medical care in the Bronx, but the plan is meeting resistance.

The death rate from AIDS in the Bronx—one of New York City’s five boroughs—is nearly 10 times the national average, which health officials attribute to the fact that about 25 percent of residents “only learn they are affected after the disease has progressed to full-blown AIDS,” Time magazine reports.

The new plan, announced at the end of June, would encourage, but not require, HIV testing for all residents older than 18 during regular medical visits.

To achieve this goal, the health department has agreed to simplify the testing process in the Bronx, eliminating pretesting counseling normally required, which has some in the health industry worried.

GM to cut thousands more jobs, sell assets

Automaker suspends dividend, announcing second restructuring in weeks
Associated Press
MSNBC News

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will lay off salaried workers, cut truck production, suspend its dividend and borrow $2 billion to $3 billion to weather a severe downturn in the U.S. market.

GM said the moves will raise $15 billion to help cover losses and turn around its North American operations, including $10 billion from internal cost-cutting and $5 billion from selling some assets and borrowing against others.

GM’s shares fell as much as 6 percent to a new 54-year low of $8.81, then rebounded to $9.94 in midday trading, up 56 cents from Monday’s close.

Chief Operating Officer Fritz Henderson said GM wants to reduce its total salaried costs in the U.S. and Canada by more than 20 percent.

A large chunk of the reduction, he said, would come from cutting health care benefits for salaried retirees over age 65. Those people would get a pension increase from the company’s overfunded pension fund to help compensate for Medicare and supplemental insurance, the company said.

Feds close down IndyMac Bank

Event is fifth and biggest bank failure this year
By Matt Carter
Inman News

In the biggest bank failure of the housing downturn to date, federal banking regulators today closed IndyMac Bank FSB, naming the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. as conservator.

The FDIC said it will transfer insured deposits and "substantially all the assets" of IndyMac Bank, to a newly created successor, IndyMac Federal Bank, which will be operated by the FDIC.

IndyMac was one of the nation's largest independent mortgage lenders, and had been hard hit by delinquencies and foreclosures. Parent company IndyMac Bancorp Inc. announced Monday that it was no longer considered "well capitalized" by regulators and had stopped making most mortgage loans.

IndyMac Bank, FSB had total assets of $32.01 billion and total deposits of $19.06 billion as of March 31, including about $1 billion of potentially uninsured deposits held by approximately 10,000 depositors. The FDIC will begin contacting customers with uninsured deposits to arrange an appointment with an FDIC claims agent by Monday.

The FDIC will pay uninsured depositors an advance dividend equal to 50 percent of the uninsured amount. Based on preliminary analysis, the estimated cost of the resolution to the Deposit Insurance Fund is between $4 billion and $8 billion.

What is the true spiritual significance of the return of the Sons of Yah?
Breath of Life Lesson #2
Ahtur Keymah
KNN-Cleveland

"What is the true spiritual significance of the return of the Sons of Yah? The return of the Children of Israel and the subsequent establishing of the Kingdom of Yah signaled the end of Euro-gentile dominion over Yah’s creation and people.

There will never be a return to the former prosperity of what was called the “good ole days.”

How is it possible for you not to have noticed that the present order is not conducive for the creation of family stability, harmony, mutual trust, love, dedication, good health, and certainly not peace of mind, body, society, neighborhood or home? We must conclude that this world’s order is not ideal for perpetuating these principles, virtues or effects.

A new man with a new mind has been created – one who will not bow to the dictates of the system nor fear the threats of the adversary, but one who farers his Yah and loves his people enough to give his all to save them. It is time now for the righteous scribes who have reborn and redeemed from the pits of hell to declare the good news that the Kingdom of Yah has come."

Softball / Dimona goes extra to beat Penticon

The Mean Judeans pulled off a 6-3 victory over Penticon
By Micah Winston
Haaretz.com

In the first game of the Israel Softball Association Finals on Tuesday, the Mean Judeans of Dimona pulled off a 6-3 victory in eight innings over Penticon.

A pitching duel between Penticon's Ami Baran and Elyaheed Ben Israel of Dimona left the score at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, with Mark Mayerfeld's triple the big hit for Penticon. Penticon struck with two runs off of reliever Yarone Ben-Israel on errors to edge ahead 3-2.

Dimona then tied the game 3-3 in the top half of the seventh when a misplayed fly ball hit by teen Tahby Ben Israel resulted in an inside-the-park home run. Three runs in extra inning In the extra inning, Dimona scored three runs on RBI doubles by Akhaziya Ben Israel and Amikhai Ben Israel, and an RBI single by Tahby.

Penticon threatened in their half of the inning with runners on first and second and no outs and big gun Baran up to bat. Baran hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Elinatan who tagged the runner and flipped to the second baseman Nativiyah for a nifty double play to quash the rally.

Game 2 of the Finals was played last night at the Baptist Village, but ended after press time.

Hard Facts About Youth and HIV/AIDS

At least two teenagers and young adults in America are infected with HIV every hour of every day
TheBody.com

Between 40,000 and 50,000 Americans become infected with HIV every year. Half of them are between the ages of 13 and 24. That means at least two teenagers and young adults in this country are infected with HIV every hour of every day.

People infected with HIV carry the virus in their body fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. The virus can spread only if these HIV-infected fluids enter the bloodstream of another person.

This can take place (1) through the linings of the vagina, rectum, mouth, or the opening at the tip of the penis; (2) through intravenous injection with a syringe; or (3) through a break in the skin, such as a cut or sore. The most common ways that people become HIV-infected are:

Unprotected sexual intercourse (either vaginal or anal) with someone who has HIV.

Unprotected oral sex with someone who has HIV.

Sharing needles or syringes (including those used for steroids) with someone who has HIV.

Infection during pregnancy, childbirth, or breast-feeding.

There are close to one million Americans living with HIV/AIDS. Roughly 25% of them became infected when they were teenagers, and the rate of infection among young people is rising.

America-The Throw-A-Way Society

The modern throw-away society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The throw-away society is a human society strongly influenced by consumerism. The term describes a critical view of over-consumption and excessive production of short-lived or disposable items.

Between the start of New York City waste collections in 1905 and 2005 there was a tenfold rise in "product waste" (packaging and old products), from 92 to 1,242 pounds per person per year. Containers and packaging now represent 32 percent of all municipal solid waste. Non-durable goods (products used less than three years) are 27 percent, and durable goods are 16 percent.

Food Waste

In 2004, a University of Arizona study indicates that forty to fifty percent of all edible food never gets eaten. Every year $43 billion worth of edible food is estimated to be thrown away.

Vertical integration of manufacturing encourages the throw-away society, as vertically-integrated firms are able to charge excessive prices for (usually-patented) intermediate components, thus making repair of products more expensive than their outright replacement.

Hanging On to Marriage: Tough Task in a Throwaway World

In U.S. we throw away wives, husbands, marriages
N.Y. Times

''We're a throw-away society, aren't we?'' Newman was saying. ''We throw away everything. We never even try to fix things - we throw them away, we destroy things - appliances that break, old buildings because they're old, we throw away relationships that aren't exactly what we thought they'd be, we throw away wives, husbands, marriages.''

It isn't that Paul Newman is the most profound man on earth but itwas the question he responded to that interested me: ''To what do you owe your long and successful marriage? In the world you live in - Hollywood, the theater - long marriages are almost extinct, perhaps impossible.''

A long marriage. By today's standards, what is long? Five years, 10, 15? If so, what are 25, 30, 40?

''They are not long marriages - they are life sentences,'' says a young friend. ''It is impossible to live with someone that long and not be bored out of your skull. Sex with the same person for 30 years? Give me a break!''

It saddens and, at the same time, fascinates me, this complete ignorance of what the young are really talking about when they talk of marriage.

Of course, with time and age comes wisdom, but 40 years ago when some of us married, didn't we have some sense of what we were committing to? Of course we didn't realize what ''for better, for worse'' might entail but we at least were willing to try. I sometimes wonder why people bother with the whole rite of marriage these days, given their attitude toward it.

Softball / Dimona draws first blood in semis

Dimona Mean Judeans took a 1-0 lead in the their semifinal series
By Micha Winston
Haaretz.com

Ben Kai Ben Yisrael went 4-4 with three runs scored and threw a runner out at third to end the game as the Dimona Mean Judeans took a 1-0 lead in the their semifinal series on Monday with a 7-5 victory over the Tel Aviv Tigers.

Dimona scored one in the first off of starter Goose Gillett when Ben Kai doubled and came around to score on Elyaheed Ben Israel's single and tacked on two more in the second on Elinatan Ben Israel's long two-run sacrifice fly scoring Akhaziyah Ben Israel and Ovade Ben Israel.

The Tigers battled back, closing the gap to 3-2 when two runs scored off of Yarone Ben Israel on passed balls, one after a triple by Alberto Scioscia.

In the fourth inning, the Tigers tag-team pitching strategy backfired as the Southerners tallied two more off of relief pitcher Mike Williams - Ben Kai again scoring, and single runs in the fifth and sixth off of Ilan Spira.

Down 7-2 in the seventh inning, the Tigers rallied against new pitcher Elyaheed. Two runs scored on a fielding error and then, with runners on first and third, Mendie Pinchovski laced an RBI single to centerfield. Ben Kai came up throwing and fired a perfect strike to third baseman Amikhi Ben Israel who applied the tag to runner Eran Kedar for the final out.

PH/ALKALINE LIFESTYLE AND WATER PT. 1

When our pH level is unbalanced, almost any area of our bodies can be negatively affected
Submitted by
Miginiel B. Isreal
KNN-NY

Each and every person living in the U.S. is facing a myriad of health and lifestyle challenges every day.

We are constantly being fed new information about what is healthy and what is unhealthy while thousands of us try to deal with problems ranging from obesity to fatigue to life threatening diseases.

The alkalarian approach to diet offers a simple, basic understanding of what causes the body to become ‘out of balance’. Through what has become the typical Western diet largely based around meat, dairy, sugars, alcohol, saturated fats and caffeine, millions of us have created a hostile, acidic environment within our bodies.

The pH level of our internal fluids affects every living cell in our bodies and the effect that over-acidification can have upon the health of our bodies is immense, with a chronically over acidic pH creating an extremely negative environment which affects all cellular functions from the beatings of the heart to the neural workings of the brain.

When our pH level is unbalanced, almost any area of our bodies can be negatively affected creating results such as cancer, heart disease, obesity, weight problems, allergies, fatigue and premature aging as well as problems with our nervous system, cardiovascular system and muscles.

PH/ALKALINE LIFESTYLE AND WATER PT. 2

Where to Start
Submitted by
Miginiel B. Israel
KNN-NY

To begin to alkalize it is important to start consuming alkalizing foods, higher alkaline water and drinks while eliminating acidifying foods and drinks from your diet. As a rough guide you should try to include some of the following:
Foods that Alkalize:

Vegetables: Spinach, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, celery, cucumber, lettuce, courgette, cabbage, greens, swede, squash (summer, butternut, yellow etc), peppers, chili, tomato, onion, garlic, chickpeas, pinto beans, kidney beans, spring onion, root ginger
Salads: Lettuce, spinach, celery, cucumber, nuts (aside from peanuts and cashews), seeds, avocado, carrots etc.

Herbs & Spices: Basil, parsley, mint, coriander, ginger, cumin etc.
Essential Fats: Flax/Linseed, Evening Primrose, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil or an oil blend such as Udo' Choice

Fruits: ONLY - Lemons, Lime, Grapefruit, Watermelon, Tomato, Avocado - all other fruits to be used quite sparingly

Grasses: Wheat, barley, kamut, lemon, shave etc.

Sprouts: Alfalfa, mung bean, broccoli, radish, wheat, lentil, fenugreek etc.

Dips and Sauces: Pesto, hummus, tahini, guacamole etc.

Foods that Acidify:
Sugar, Dairy Products, Meat (aside from occasional coldwater fish), Caffeine, Tobacco, Wheat (aside from sprouts or wheatgrass), Fruit (apart from those mentioned above), Bad fats (saturated, transfatty acids, hydrogenated), Junk/ Processed foods, Fizzy drinks, Peanuts and Cashews, Pasta and White Rice, Condiments.

The most effective way to reverse the trend of over-acidification is to ‘cleanse’ the body of toxins and rapidly create an alkaline environment in which the body can heal itself. Cleansing is a natural, holistic method of healing in which the body detoxifies itself and regenerates healthy vibrant cells, effectively becoming more alkalized.

For some people, cleansing can put an individual one year ahead in the healing process!

This is a very brief outline of the most important principles of an alkaline diet. I highly recommend you read Alkalize or Die, by Dr. Theodore A. Baroody to gain a full understanding of an alkaline lifestyle.

KNN-Cleveland
`
KNN is proud to announce that we will be offering weekly "Breath of Life Classes" online. This will give our online family a chance to better understand the doctrine of the Kingdom of Yah.
`
Each week will we will post various lessons and ask our online family to respond and explain what they have read. You can also expound on the lesson and add whatever input and questions that you may have.
`
Lesson #1
`
The following excerpt is take from Ben Ammi's latest writing "The Resurrection: From Judgment tot Post-Judgment". Please read the following passages and explain to us what you get from what Ben Ammi is expressing:
`
"When the habitation of a species is continuously invaded to the extent that the eco-system required for its support is destroyed, that species will soon become extinct without an obvious, massive extermination. That means you can destroy a species by destroying the eco-system required for its survival. Are there vital elements of the eco-system whose absence would bring wide-spread destruction upon the "B'ray-sheet" (Genesis) social structure (habitat) of man, woman, children and the family as a unit?
`
Every individual is representative of a micro eco-system. The mind of such is required to manage it appropriately. A faulty mind will leave man's internal organs in the same state as his rivers, lakes, topsoil, underground springs, air, and ozone. Our social environment and society (a social order structured where there is a binding relation between all constituent parts and persons) would be resoundly affected by the loss of these vital eco-processes. Are such admonishments as: "honor thy father and mother", "love thy neighbor as thyself", "do unto others as you desire them to do unto you", things we can live without, or are they elements that make up a life-support system?"

Romantic human-robot relationships are no longer the stuff of science fiction
by Alix Rijckaert
Yahoo News

MAASTRICHT, Netherlands (AFP) - Romantic human-robot relationships are no longer the stuff of science fiction -- researchers expect them to become reality within four decades.

And they do not mean simply, mechanical sex.

"I am talking about loving relationships about 40 years from now," David Levy, author of the book "Love + sex with robots", told AFP at an international conference held last week at the University of Maastricht in the south-east of the country.

"... when there are robots that have also emotions, personality, consciousness. They can talk to you, they can make you laugh. They can ... say they love you just like a human would say 'I love you', and say it as though they mean it ..."

Robots as sex toys should already be on the market within five years, predicted Levy, "a sort of an upgrade of the sex dolls on sale now".

These would have electronic speech and sensors that make them utter "nice sounds" when a human caresses their "erogenous zones".

America for sale?

It's not just Wall Street bailouts. Foreign ownership of U.S. assets is accelerating - and that's a worrisome trend.
By Geoff Colvin
Fortune Magazine
Senior editor-at-large

(Fortune Magazine) -- The big foreign-money purchases of stakes in Citigroup, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley are merely a hint of what's ahead in 2008. Foreign buyers, such as sovereign wealth funds from countries like Kuwait and Singapore, will continue to make headlines by grabbing major U.S. assets this year, and the trend is much broader than investments in Wall Street firms that need a capital infusion. What's important to understand is why this is happening - the reasons go beyond what most people realize - and why it may be even more worrisome than it seems.

Such deals were hot even before the bank bailouts. Foreign buyers set a record last year by purchasing $414 billion of U.S. assets - even more than they bought in the wonder year of 2000. The usual explanation is that the dollar was cheap, which was certainly an important factor. But more had to be going on. Many of the biggest deals were done by Asian or Middle Eastern buyers who already hold much of their wealth in dollars. Those investors didn't get a discount because of the dollar's declining value. In addition, U.S. stocks were hitting record highs through much of last year, so it's hard to say that American businesses in general were bargains. Why, then, were foreign buyers so busy?

Sunshine vitamin may help prevent heart attack

Vitamin D in the body may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease
By David Liu, Ph.D.
Foodconsumer.org

TUESDAY June 10, 2008 (foodconsumer.org) -- Taking vitamin D supplements or getting enough exposure to sunlight may help reduce risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack), according to a new study in the June 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Studies have showed the rate of cardiovascular disease-related death is higher in regions located at higher latitudes and during the winter time and lower at high altitudes, according to the background information in the study report.

Exposure to sunlight triggers biosynthesis of vitamin D in the body. This means that vitamin D in the body may probably affect the risk of cardiovascular disease.

“This pattern is consistent with an adverse effect of hypovitaminosis D, which is more prevalent at higher latitudes, during the winter and at lower altitudes,” the authors write. Hypovitaminosis D is also known as vitamin deficiency.

Vitamin D, commonly known for its role in bone health, has recently been found to have a strong protective effect against a number of cancers such as breast cancer. Deficiency of this vitamin has been linked to higher risk of autoimmune disease and hypertension.

Sunshine is the major source of vitamin D.

Male birth control pill soon a reality

Implants, patches and creams also on the way
By John Schieszer
MSNBC contributor

SEATTLE, Oct. 1 — - Forty-year-old Scott Hardin says he’s glad that men may soon have a new choice when it comes to birth control. But, he adds, he would not even consider taking a male hormonal contraceptive. Hardin is like many men who are pleased to hear they may have a new option but are wary of taking any type of hormones.

“I would rather rely on a solution that doesn’t involving medicating myself and the problems women have had with hormone therapy doesn’t make me anxious to want to sign on to taking a hormone-type therapy,” says Hardin, who is single and a college administrator.

For the first time, a safe, effective and reversible hormonal male contraceptive appears to be within reach. Several formulations are expected to become commercially available within the near future. Men may soon have the options of a daily pill to be taken orally, a patch or gel to be applied to the skin, an injection given every three months or an implant placed under the skin every 12 months, according to Seattle researchers.
