Israel’s President Pays Historic Visit to Hebrew Israelite Community

[Dimona – Aug 19, 2008] Israel’s President Shimon Peres will visit the Hebrew Israelite Community in Dimona Thursday, August 21, as part of a special tour of the Negev. The visit serves as a stage for a celebration of the President’s 84th birthday, marked August 2.

The community of 3,000 former African Americans is a featured stop in the President’s tour of the Negev Desert of town, which has become synonymous with the community members who arrived nearly 40 years ago, led by anointed spiritual leader, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel.

The President will greet community members, get an historical presentation chronicling the 4 decades of the Hebrew community’s existence in Israel, enjoy a performance by the choir and finally address community members. He will share the stage with Ben Ammi and Dimona mayor, Meir Cohen.

Over the years, Peres’ has been keen on developing the Negev, seeing it as key to the future strength of the state. In recent months Hebrew Community leaders have been meeting with Israel’s government officials putting finishing touches on plans to build a new settlement within the city of Dimona, to further showcase their unique lifestyle. The community hosts between 300 and 400 visitors each month from all over the world who come to partake of the pleasant atmosphere and their keys to healthy living, including a vegan-diet and natural food production, organic agriculture, and the most popular music groups in the country. The community has been proclaimed a “miracle in the desert” by the US Congress Human Rights Caucus and an “island of sanity,” by Israeli media.

Peres will also visit city hall, a local communications training center, and the Dimona library in the day-long excursion. At the end of the day, the town will host a mass birthday celebration for the famed octogenarian. “You can’t come to Dimona and not visit the Hebrew community,” a spokesman for the Dimona municipality said. “For people all over the world they have put the city on the map. They are the face of Dimona.”

Google to Invest in Geothermal

Google.org, the public-spirited division of Google.com, charged with addressing “climate change, poverty and emerging disease,” is using the backdrop of the National Clean Energy Summit here in Las Vegas to announce a new round of clean energy financing.

In a nutshell, the company is investing an arguably modest sum — a little over $10 million — in the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, or EGS. The technology differs from “traditional” geothermal in that rather than exploiting existing wells of earthbound steam and hot water, EGS drills deep — miles down — to access layers of heated granite that exist underfoot everywhere on the planet. Water can be circulated downward for heating, and then upward to drive turbines and generate electricity.

Married Folks Still the Healthiest

People who've exchanged wedding vows tend to be healthier

People who've exchanged wedding vows tend to be healthier than their single, divorced or widowed peers, but new research shows that health gap may be narrowing.

Interviews with today's never-married men suggest they are healthier than never-married guys were three decades ago, researchers say. And that's helping single males gain some ground, in terms of their health, compared to married people.

"One of the most-often documented facts is that married people are healthier than non-married people, but the difference between married and unmarried people has changed over the past few decades," said the study's lead author, Hui Liu, an assistant professor and sociologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

The findings are in the September issue of theJournal of Health and Social Behavior.

Liu said there are two theories as to why married people report better health. One is that being married gives you more access to social support and economic resources. The other is that being divorced or widowed hurts health.

"In general, marriage tends to make people healthier, happier and richer, and that's especially true for men," said Scott Wetzler, vice chairman of psychiatry and behavioral science, and head of the "Supporting Healthy Marriage" program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

But because trends in marriage have changed so dramatically over the past few decades, with more people opting not to marry or marrying at later ages, Liu wanted to assess what, if any, effects these changes might have on physical health.

Exercisers live longer and with fewer disabilities, study finds

It may, in fact, be possible to outrun death -- and even the creeping ravages of time -- at least for a while.

Research spanning two decades has found that older runners live longer and suffer fewer disabilities than healthy non-runners.

And the findings probably apply to a variety of aerobic exercises, including walking, said the study authors, from Stanford University School of Medicine, whose findings are published in the Aug. 11 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"This is telling you that being a runner, being active is going to reduce your disability, and it's going to increase your survival," said Marcia Ory, professor of social and behavioral health at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health in College Station. "Late in life, you still see the benefit of vigorous activity."

'Sunshine Vitamin' May Cut Death Risk

Vitamin D Appears to Cut Risk of Dying Early

In the newest in a line of studies showing the potential value of vitamin D, new research from Johns Hopkins University shows that not getting enough of the so-called "sunshine vitamin" may increase the risk of early death by more than a quarter.

Researchers used data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and looked at people's vitamin D levels and then death from various causes. While the risk of death for people with low vitamin D from any single cause was only slightly elevated, the broader picture showed a 26 percent increase in death rates.

"[Low] vitamin D levels seem to confer an increased risk of dying from any cause," said Dr. Erin Michos, a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins, and one of the lead investigators of the study.

She said that the study showed an association between low vitamin D and death from heart disease, and said further study may reveal vitamin D to be a sign of impending heart disease.

Many doctors cite the importance of vitamin D because of the relatively high levels of deficiency among Americans. A 2005 study from Drew University and UCLA showed that more than 41 percent of men and 53 percent of women had mildly or severely deficient levels of vitamin D.

And those chronic deficiencies are why people should monitor vitamin D levels, according to O'Keefe.

"We're not designed to be moles; we're designed to be outdoor creatures," he said. "Prudent sun exposure not only feels good, it's good for vitamin D levels."

Isaac Hayes Found Dead

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 10) -Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. He was 65.

A family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, according to the sheriff's office. The cause of death was not immediately known.

In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, for what became known as urban-contemporary music and for romantic crooners like Barry White. And he was rapping before there was rap.

His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show "South Park."

The album "Hot Buttered Soul" made Hayes a star in 1969. His shaven head, gold chains and sunglasses gave him a compelling visual image.

Bernie Mac dies at 50

Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia

Comedian and Chicago native Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist confirmed.

Mac, 50, had been hospitalized for about a week at Northwestern Hospital, according to his spokeswoman. A few years ago, Mac disclosed that he suffered from sarcoidosis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue, most often in the lungs.

The comic born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough could cut an imposing figure. He stood six-foot-three, was built like a fullback and carried himself with a bouncer's reticence. But perhaps the strongest weapon in the Chicago comedian's arsenal was that voice, that amalgam of thought and a delivery that could rise like a tidal wave, outpace a Gatling gun and remained, to his last days, loud and unapologetic.

He wasn't scared, he told us time and again, to tell anyone what he thought, to say what others were afraid to say. That fearlessness wasn't always welcome, considering Mac didn't get his big break until his 30s. But when he did, the comic skyrocketed to success in stand-up, television and the big screen.

Mac is survived by his wife Rhonda McCullough, their daughter, Je'Niece, a son-in-law and a granddaughter, Jasmine.

Black Hebrews Establish Village of Peace in Israel

This thriving community serves as a model for communities around the world

The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, also known as the Kingdom of Yah, arrived in Dimona, Israel, in 1969. This new community in Israel consisted originally of African-Americans who first migrated from America to Liberia (West Africa) during the heightened Pan-African movement of the 60s and was founded by Ben Ammi Ben-Israel.

While in Liberia, the group settled and purged themselves of the negative mental and physical conditions that were present in their former home. After their settlement period in Liberia, the small community made plans to migrate onward, making the last and final portion of their journey home to Israel - land which they consider geographically a part of Northeast Africa.

The group's lifestyle places great emphasis on diet, spirituality and family. They maintain a vegan diet and exercise frequently. The community harvests its own food, administer their own schools, and operate their own hospital, a pre-natal/post-natal care facility.

One notable achievement that has attracted the attention of scientist and health practitioners is the undisputed status of good health that exists among the community's residents. For example, "a medical study conducted in Dimona by US university researchers in 1998 found the community was largely free of illnesses typical to African-Americans such as hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol" reports Avida Landau of the South African Star newspaper.

Doctors found that only 6 percent of those in the vegan Dimona community suffered from high blood pressure, compared to 30 percent of black men and women in America. Further, only 5 percent of the African Israelite community were obese, compared to 32 percent of the black community in America (study from 1998). Proper health and habits that they believe serve the well-being of the community are emphasized.

The African Hebrew Israelites continue to expand their presence throughout the world with community centers and their own chain of vegan restaurants in Israel, Ghana, US Virgin Islands, and throughout the United States (Chicago, Houston, Washington DC, Atlanta, St. Louis, Cleveland, Tallahassee, Charleston, Vicksburg).

Good news for couch potatoes. There may be a pill that lets them watch their TV and get their exercise, too—without moving a muscle.

Scientists have found a drug that mimics the effects of a workout by, among other things, increasing the body's ability to burn fat.

The study shows the pill can also increase endurance; lab mice that took it ran more than 40 percent longer on a treadmill than their untreated peers.

"It's tricking the muscle into 'believing' it's been exercised daily," says Ronald Evans, a developmental biologist at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, in La Jolla, Calif., and co-author of a study published in Cell. "It proves you can have a pharmacologic equivalent to exercise.

"In addition to supercharging stamina, the drug, called AICAR, may also be useful in treating debilitating muscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy as well as metabolic diseases such as diabetes, because it also appears to help the body use and remove sugar from the blood more effectively.

Researchers say that AICAR—which is in clinical trials to treat some heart ailments—in essence works by reprogramming muscle, switching it from sugar-burning, fast twitch muscle—which is better for speed and power—into fat-burning, slow-twitch muscle that does not tire as easily.

The key to this transformation is a protein called PPARdelta, which Evan's team previously showed could create so-called high-endurance "marathon mice" if it genetically engineered the animals were genetically engineered to make a lot of it. But, another experimental drug that targeted only PPARdelta had some metabolic benefits, including lowering fatty acids and blood sugar, but it only boosted endurance in mice that were running regularly.

Delta to raise baggage fees

Domestic flights will increase from $25 to $50

Delta Air Lines Inc. will increase fees for checked baggage on some domestic and international flights to cope with skyrocketing fuel prices.

for the second checked bag on domestic flights will increase from $25 to $50 for passengers who purchased a ticket on or after July 31 for flights on or after Aug. 5. Fees for items requiring special care, such as surfboards, also will increase on both domestic and international routes.

First checked bags will remain complementary on domestic flights, as will the first two checked bags on international trips, the carrier said.

Passengers in first class, BusinessElite customers and Medallion customers will still be able to check up to three bags at no charge, the airline said.

The fee hikes will apply to passengers who purchased a ticket on or after July 31 for flights on or after Aug. 5, the airline said. Fuel costs have risen more than 70 percent in the past year, and Atlanta-based Delta (NYSE: DAL) said the fees will help offset rising costs.

Fee changes for Canadian and Brazilian routes will require foreign government approval.

Marriage Survey Results

98% of the peopled surveyed were married and happy

We at KNN would like to thank everyone who participated in our Marriage Survey. Of the up to 100 people that were surveyed 98% of them were married and happy. All of the participants from the Kingdom of Yah who responded stated that they were married.

Over 75% of them have been married for more than 15 years and 25% have been married for less than 15 years. Of those who responded 45 years was the longest marriage that we recorded and 1 year and 6 months was the shortest.

When asked what was the main ingredient for a lasting marriage we received several responses. We have included some of the comments below.

When you trust in the lord with all your heart, there is no reason to have your defenses up and be guarded - closed minded (leaning to your own mind) because you know and trust that you have been brought together for the purpose of enhancing one another's spiritual growth...All things are working together for good and no-thing has come to hurt you. So you are open to hearing, receiving, seeing, guidance, correction, etc…..TRUST is my answer.”

they first had to make their purpose sincere,

they first had to extend their knowledge to the utmost….

Such knowledge is acquired through a careful investigation of things,
for with things investigated knowledge becomes complete,
with knowledge complete,
the purpose becomes sincere,
with the purpose sincere,
the mind is set in order…

With the mind set in order there is real self-discipline,
with real self-discipline the family achieves harmony,
with harmony in the family,
the state becomes well governed…

With the state well governed,
There is peace throughout the land…
