Second day of storms hits Midwest hard Wind and rain wreak havoc on Ohio, Illinois. By Thomas J. Sheeran, Associated Press

Severe storms pounded the upper Midwest with strong winds and heavy rain for a second day Thursday and were blamed for the death of a firefighter who tried to rescue two teenagers from rising floodwaters.
Al Anderson Jr., 47, was trying to get to the teens, whose Jeep had gotten stuck, when he drowned in Wellington, Ohio, about 40 miles southwest of Cleveland, authorities said. The teens were rescued. Near Logan, Ohio, nine people were injured Thursday afternoon when lightning struck a shelter during a charity run, according to the State Highway Patrol. One had life-threatening injuries. In Indiana, strong thunderstorms prompted numerous storm and flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service and left behind widespread reports of damaged homes, downed trees and blown over semi-trailers.
A lightning strike in Indianapolis sent six firefighter trainees to a hospital, although officials said none of the injuries appeared serious. The site of the U.S. track and field championships was evacuated twice as storms moved through the downtown area.
On Wednesday, 5 inches of rain fell in a five-hour span in the Toledo, Ohio, area, 56 mph wind gusts and golf ball-size hail pelted northern Ohio, and tornadoes were reported in Michigan, the National Weather Service said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Torrential rain soaked the U.S. capital, toppled a century-old elm tree at the White House, closed the home of the Declaration of Independence and kept tax collectors from work on Monday.
With as much as 7 inches of rain falling since Sunday in an East Coast deluge, flooded basements or power outages forced the Internal Revenue Service, Commerce Department, Justice Department and the National Archives to close. The federal government told its 280,000 area workers they could take leave if they were unable to get to work. Once approved by the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning, the Conflict Resolution Center will combine educational opportunities found through MVSU with instructional course material on non-violent conflict resolution.Courses through MVSU and the Conflict Resolution Center are expected to begin in 2007. Ben Ammi Ben- leader of the groups that left the American shores, spoke to online journal Haaretz.com about Eddie Butler- himself with American origins. ''We're always excited about representing Israel,'' Ben Ammi responded, when asked about the community's singer Eddie Butler, who was an enthusiastic envoy of Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest this month.Eddie Butler's song finished in the penultimate postion out of the 24 contestants. This was initially disappointing, however Ben Ammi conceded ''After we considered who won, we knew that the mindset of the people was not ready for the light from Israel.'' The Dimona Mean Judeans defeated the Galil "Golan Plastic Products" Twisters 16-6 and Penticon downed Ziontours 19-4 in six innings in the first round of the Israel Softball Association playoffs on Sunday night.
The first game at Baptist Village near Petah Tikva featured Dimona, the top A Division team, against the Twisters, the winners of the B Division who defeated the A Division's Tigers for a spot in the playoffs.
Dimona jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first off pitcher Yosi Ajzenwaser, taking advantage of three walks, two errors and Yigahl Ben Israel's key three-run homer. The Twisters settled down and started hitting Dimona pitcher Yaron Ben-Israel, banging out 14, three each by Moshe Hyde and Eitan Milgram, who tripled, but Yaron got the big outs when he needed them, stranding 10 Twisters on base and never allowing the Galileans to get closer than five runs.
For Dimona, Shlomo Ben-Israel was 4-for-4 with three runs, Yigal had three hits and Elyaheed Ben-Israel and Benkie Ben-Israel each tripled.
The second game of each best-of-three series are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Village.

New study confirms experts' suspicions that it's a major factor in troubling trend-ABC News

America's obesity epidemic is definitely driving the nation's type 2 diabetes epidemic, says a new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While other factors play some role in the rapidly increasing number of people with diabetes, obesity is the major factor in the trend, said Linda S. Geiss, lead author of the study, published in the May issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study, based on concrete numbers drawn from the entire country, backs up what experts have long believed, said Geiss, a statistician with the CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation.

"Most incidence studies [of diabetes] have been done on samples that aren't representative of the United States," she said. "These [new] data are nationally representative. In a busy week of ISA softball, the Dimona Mean Judeans clinched first place in the A Division by destroying the Galil Golan Plastic Products Twisters 17-1. The Twisters, in turn, clinched first place in the B Division by holding on to defeat a feisty Otzma Eilat team 14-13. On Wednesday, Dimona smacked one line drive and ground ball up the middle after another, and the Twisters' defense was sloppy, while fireballer Yaron Ben-Israel held the northerners to three hits. El Yaheed Ben-Israel had three hits and three runs, Ovade Ben-Israel knocked in five runs, Yaron and Emmanuel Ben-Israel each tripled and scored twice for the explosive Dimona offense. Jake Miller batted in the lone Twister run. Also on Sunday, Zion Tours led 4-2 and 6-4 on big hits from Noam Zwilling, Aviv Ya'akov and an inside-thepark homer by Benny Ruggill, but then Dimona pitcher Yaron Ben-Israel, with help from excellent defense, shut the door while his offense mounted a comeback. First baseman Yehuda Ben-Israel made several outstanding plays while going 2-2 at bat, El Yaheed Ben-Israel was outstanding at shortstop and 3-4 at the plate, and Ben Koliyah Ben-Israel had the game-winning RBI.

Efforts to explore Mars are benefiting a Cornish website selling plots of land.

St Austell firm Moonestates.com has been selling off chunks of the moon since 2000, when it bought the UK franchise for "land sales across the solar system" from American businessman Dennis Hope.
But now the announcement by US President George W Bush that the Moon is to be used as a stepping stone for a mission to Mars has excited a flood of interest in Martian property.
One-acre plots, which are soSue Williams from Moonestates said: "Dennis Hope realised there was a loophole in the United Nations Outer Space Treaty of 1967.
"That basically says that no country or government can lay claim to extraterrestrial land, but it forgot to say no person could.
"He basically filed his claim with the United Nations in 1980 and has been selling the land since.
"We've looked into it very carefully and this loophole does exist. Even ex-presidents of the United States Ronald Regan and Jimmy Carter have become land-owners on Mars and the Moon, I believe."
She said there had been much interest in Mars, particularly since Britain's Beagle Two mission and America's Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed.
However, not all of the planet is up for grabs. Dennis Hope said areas would be kept for the benefit of humanity.
Sue Williams said: "Sites of scientific interest have been put aside for all of mankind and Dennis isn't selling those."
But if anyone does buy a plot and wants to visit, they will have to prepare to wrap up warm as the temperatures drop to about -73C at midnight.
They will also have to their own air, as they will not be able to breathe the thin atmosphere.
But some customers have bought the plots as gifts.
Sue Williams said: "We have a lot of people who buy plots of the Moon for their partner.
"They say 'I promised them the earth, but at least I can give them a part of the Moon'."
The British National Space Centre said it was not aware of any complaints about the selling of land on the Moon and on Mars. ld with a deed, constitution, property map, mineral rights and a copy of the original Declaration of Ownership are being sold for about £20.

Type 2 diabetes grows as public health threat

NEW YORK - Every day the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center is busy — with new and returning patients.
Director Dr. Robin Goland says its is a major problem in every hospital.
"Ten percent of patients on a medical service in a hospital have diabetes," she says. "Fifty percent of patients on a vascular surgery service have diabetes." Diabetes is the inability to metabolize sugar properly — so it builds up in the blood. Type 1, a genetic disease that usually strikes in childhood, is not increasing. The big change is with Type 2 — caused partly by obesity.
In just a decade, the number of Americans diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes more than doubled to 14.7 million and the government estimates more than 5 million others have it and don't know it. "These are people that have no opportunity to control the blood sugar, and these are people who find out about the diabetes when they discover a complication," says Dr. Garland. The complications include damage to the entire circulatory system — which in turn can cause heart attacks, blindness, loss of arms and legs, kidney damage and stroke. But it does not have to happen. After David Elkins was diagnosed two years ago, he lost 35 pounds and started exercising regularly. Now his blood sugar is normal.
"It's great to be able to feel like I'm in shape," he says.
A simple blood test can detect whether a person's blood sugar is moving toward diabetic level. Experts recommend that everyone 45 and older, obese or with a family history of diabetes, get the test.

How Long Will America Lead the World?

Eight months ago, the national academies of sciences, engineering and medicine came together to put out a report that argued that the "scientific and technical building blocks of our economic leadership are eroding at a time when many nations are gathering strength." There are some who see the decline of science and technology as part of a larger cultural decay. A country that once adhered to a Puritan ethic of delayed gratification has become one that revels in instant pleasures. We're losing interest in the basics—math, manufacturing, hard work, savings—and becoming a postindustrial society that specializes in consumption and leisure. "More people will graduate in the United States in 2006 with sports-exercise degrees than electrical-engineering degrees," says Immelt. "So, if we want to be the massage capital of the world, we're well on our way." America's problem right now is that it is not really that scared. There is an intelligent debate about these issues among corporate executives, writers and the thin sliver of the public than is informed on these issues. But mainstream America is still unconcerned. Partly this is because these trends are operating at an early stage and somewhat under the surface. Americans do not really know how fast the rest of the world is catching up. Our greatest danger is that when the American public does begin to get scared, they will try to shut down the very features of the country that have made it so successful. Over the past year there have already been growing paranoia on all these fronts. If we go down this path, we will remain a rich country and a stable one. Cleveland braces for another deadly summer

Five people killed in separate slayings across Cleveland

In less than 48 hours, four men and a teenage boy were killed in unrelated homicides in Cleveland. A 48-year-old man died at Huron Hospital on Saturday after he was shot in a driveway in the 1900 block of East 89th Street. Police did not disclose the man's name because relatives had not yet been contacted.
The man was working on a vehicle in the driveway about 6:15 p.m. when someone approached, fired several shots at him and then fled, said Sgt. Dan Galmarini, a police spokesman. About 15 hours earlier, several men pulled Dawud Salim, 37, from his car, which was stopped at a red light on Lorain Avenue at Fulton Road, Galmarini said.
Salim was beaten and stabbed in the chest before he was able to get back into his car. The unknown assailants were driving a red or maroon car, a witness told police.
About 1:15 a.m. Friday, Russell Sutich, 30, was shot several times when he tried to break up a group of men loitering or dealing drugs outside Helen's Tavern on Storer Avenue. Neil Losch, 22, is charged with aggravated homicide. A possible accomplice, Gregory Sheppard II, 19, was in police custody on Saturday.
At 10:40 p.m. Friday, Davontae Pearson, 15, of Warrensville Heights, was fatally stabbed by a man who told police that he was defending himself against Pearson and two other teens who jumped him in the 3900 block of East 146th Street, Galmarini said.
The man, 29, also stabbed one of the 17-year-olds who was with Pearson. William Price is recovering at MetroHealth Medical Center. The man said he was walking home from work and had the knife for self-defense. He was arrested, but not charged, while detectives investigate.
In the fifth homicide, police are looking for Kevin L. Nance, 31, a suspect in the fatal shooting of Lambert C. Collins Jr., 36. Collins was shot about 9:30 p.m. Thursday while arguing with another man on a Colgate Avenue front porch.

Black men in America today are deeply divided over the way they see themselves and their country.
Black men report the same ambitions as most Americans -- for career success, a loving marriage, children, respect. And yet most are harshly critical of other black men, associating the group with irresponsibility and crime.
Black men describe a society rife with opportunities for advancement and models for success. But they also express a deep fear that their hold on the good life is fragile, in part because of discrimination they continue to experience in their daily lives.
