More people continue to be injured, killed by prescription drugs

FDA Received 20,745 New Cases of Serious Injuries
KNN-Staff

A record number of deaths and serious injuries associated with prescription drugs were reported in the first quarter of 2008.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration received 20,745 new cases of serious injuries during the first quarter, an increase of 38 percent over 2007. The number of deaths reported is 4,824, a 2.6-fold increase from the previous quarter.

For a second straight quarter, varenicline (Chantix, Champix), an aid to help stop smoking, accounted for more reported serious injuries than any other prescription drug, with a total of 1,001 new cases including 50 deaths, according to The Institute for Safe Medication Practices, an organization that educates healthcare providers and consumers about safe medication practices.

Ranked second in reported serious injuries was the blood thinner heparin, the subject of a major product recall after a potentially lethal contaminant was identified and traced to suppliers in China.

In the first quarter of 2008, the FDA received 779 reports of serious injury in which heparin was the principal suspect drug, including 102 deaths, the institute reported.

Acetaminophen, which had 160 reported deaths, and ibuprofen, with 114 reported deaths, are two of the most widely used drugs in the nation.

The findings in QuarterWatch are developed from analyzing new adverse drug event reports submitted to the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System.

Because reporting is voluntary, only a small fraction of adverse drug events that occur are reported to the FDA, or to drug manufacturers, which then investigate and forward reports to the agency. Also, while the sum of adverse event reports normally provides an overall adverse event profile for a drug, the individual reports themselves do not prove that the drug caused the event described, the institute said in its report.

Diet and Your Prostate

The strongest risk factor for prostate cancer is animal products
Dr. Dean Edell
HealthCentral.com

A new multi-country study strengthens the link between animal products as risk factors for prostate cancer, and vegetable products, especially onions, as risk reduction factors. The study, now on line at European Urology,* (William B. Grant, Ph.D., A multicountry ecologic study of risk and risk reduction factors for prostate cancer mortality, European Urology), investigated links between national diets and prostate cancer mortality rates to identify major risk factors for prostate cancer.

The indication that this might be a useful approach comes from comparing national prostate cancer mortality rates: prostate cancer mortality rates in the U.S. and northern Europe are approximately 5 times higher than in Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, and Turkey.

The strongest risk factor for prostate cancer mortality was animal products, such as meat and dairy products; the strongest risk reduction factors were onions and other protective vegetable products (cereals/grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables, but excluding alcohol, oils, and added sugar (sweeteners)). Thus, fat and protein are risk factors, while complex carbohydrates and antioxidants are risk reduction factors.

This finding points to insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) being an important risk factor for prostate cancer. IGF-I is also increased by total energy consumption. This study supports earlier reports that allium family vegetables (e.g., garlic, leeks, and onions) as important risk reduction factors for prostate cancer. This study also found that alcohol is a minor risk factor. No independent correlation was found for tomatoes, a source of lycopene, thought to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

British Prime Minister Brown hits out at 'unbridled' capitalism

Financial systems must reflect the values of "fairness"
Soferet B. Yehuda
KNN-British Isles, London

While maintaining that he was pro-business, the Prime Minister said certain "key ethics" were essential for a stronger economy. Mr Brown said financial systems must reflect the values of "fairness, stewardship and co-operation" cherished by families and communities.

"I admire the market's ability to release the dynamism and enterprise of people and so this new Labour Government is pro-business and pro-markets and always will be," he said."But I also know that we do not live by markets alone. I have long understood that markets rely on values that they cannot generate themselves.

"Values as important as treating people fairly, acting responsibly, co-operating for the benefit of all."Mr Brown said developments around the world were raising "quite fundamental questions" about the relationship between the government and the markets.

"The first financial crisis of the global age has now laid bare the weaknesses of unbridled free markets," he added. The Prime Minister's remarks came as hostilities broke out between the Government and the Conservatives over the financial crisis.

David Cameron sought on Friday to lay the blame for the looming economic recession at the door of Mr Brown. The Tory leader effectively ended what remained of the tentative political truce on the issue, arguing that the current financial crisis had exposed Mr Brown's policies as "a complete and utter failure".

Spiritual Leader Ben Ammi offers hope for a New World

Spiritual Leader Ben Ammi offers hope for a New World as Brown and Cameron’s rhetoric arrives too late.
Special Commentary by
Soferet B. Yehuda
KNN-British Isles, London

The cataclysmic repercussions from the Western world’s economic structure and its reverberations in the East are nothing short of Biblical proportions. However, spiritual wisdom from Leaders like Ben Ammi Ben Israel and his Government is cynically ignored in favour of conventional political and economic theories; like the elders teach, ‘educated fools are the worst ones.’ Brown, Bush and Cameron (BBC).

For over twenty years Ben Ammi has taught of the dangers of capitalism as an economic system and its mother ‘liberal democracy.’ Check the evidence.

While Britain’s Tory Opposition Leader David Cameron blames Gordon Brown, Labour Party Leader and Prime Minister for the economic fiasco, and Brown laments the dangers of "unbridled capitalism", the Government of the Kingdom of Yah, with great vigilance, continues to watch the leading nations of the world heading for a ditch.
____________________________
Ben Ammi’s economic system is called ‘All Things in Common’ is based on the ethics of ‘Co-operative Economics.’ All institutions within the Redemptive Hebrew Israelite Community are Regenerative and life-centred.

This message is heralded to the four corners of the earth by roving Ambassador-at-Large by way of summits with governments and Heads of State. While some African governments have become partners, others remain locked into the comfortable psychosis of staying with the mainstream for fear of being ostracized and sanctioned. All too many are there who erroneously rest in their position under the umbrella of these systems, believing themselves to be safely shielded from the effects of a crumbling, eroded socio-economic system.

But there is hope, as Gordon Brown in the Yahoo News article above confesses, politics and economics do not have the answer. Or is there? It seems like they have been heeding Ben Ammi’s message from his CDS, books and on-line master-classes. Writing in his book ‘An Imitation of Life: Redefining what constitutes life and living in the New World’ pg.10 he warns of "the rise of the civilisation of deception, a people placing great emphasis on the dissemination of false information, deception..." Liberal democracy and capitalism are like a schizophrenic with split psyche. On pg. 148 he concludes, "...no man can move in harmony with two different beats at the same time."

Exercise can help beat Alzheimer’s disease

by Helen Rae
UK-Evening Chronicle

REGULAR
exercise can reverse the decline in brain power caused by ageing and Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new survey.

The research found speed and sharpness of thought, as well as the size of brain tissue, was increased by aerobic exercise.

Author Professor Art Kramer, of the University of Illinois, cited previous research showing six months of exercise reversed age-related decline.

The article, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found deterioration in the brain’s white and grey matter as people age.

Prof Kramer wrote: “Tissue deterioration is often accompanied by decline in cognitive function, with the greatest deficits occurring on measures of executive control such as task co-ordination, planning, goal maintenance, working memory and task switching.

“However, it is these executive control processes that appear to be the most amenable to an aerobic exercise intervention.”

He found that six months of exercise reversed age-related decline and the brains of older adults retained the capacity to grow and develop.

Physically fitter adults have less evidence of a deterioration in grey matter than their less physically fit contemporaries, the report stated.

Hebrew Israelite Community Launches 'CRE8APLATE’ Catering Service

Highlights from London's 2008 Vegan Festival
Soferet Baht Yehuda
KNN-British Isles

‘From Palate to Planet’ was the stimulating topic delivered by Resident Prof. Yehoeshahfaht Ben Israel of the Institute of Regenerative Truth at the annual Vegan Festival’s Seminar. Ahk Yehoeshahfaht is a popular speaker at the event which always showcases the Extension’s creative dishes and impressive national presence in the New World celebration colours of the year. In his powerful lecture, he “expanded the bedrock of what being a Vegan means to the environment.” He ended with Ghana update through the African Hebrew Development Agency (AHDA).
______________________________________

According to the event Co-ordinator Ms. Verity Shepherd- Hunt Information Officer, well over 3,000 people passed through between 10:00AM and 7:00PM excluding stall holders. The annual festival is held in the Royal Borough of Kensington Town Hall, in West London. Vegan Day started in 1944 by Donald Watson [1910-2005] a humble English Yorkshire man and is now a spectacular showcase of displays, campaigning groups, promotional products for skin, hair, clothing and footwear and of course, much to sample and feast on.

This year’s highlight was the Extension’s launched of their Vegan Catering Service ‘Cre8aplate’ after years of requests and demands by the public for cooking classes and eat-in or a take-out services. The Caribbean touch cuisine flavours, in the popular Bar-B-cue twists, lentil patties, vegetable rice, selection of sauces, salads, freshly squeezed juices, raw (live) foods, selection of dehydrated foods and cakes, saw hundreds of customers queue up to secure their orders as Cre8aplate made its debut and secured its identity.

Administrative Taskforce Member and Director of Sisterhood Affairs, Ahkote Yikarah E. Immanuel spearheaded the operations which involved the whole Extension in the preparation, cooking and serving on the day. This year the standard was raised to a higher level. The presence of the community always brings a unique righteously captivating ambiance in: 1) The unity of colours. 2) The African-dominated identity of the community. Many inquired while others complemented on the beautiful image that the unifying colour conveyed.

Over the years the ocean of white faces on the London Vegan landscape has gradually evolved to a slightly varied and more colourful melanin mosaic. While there are encouraging signs of more people of African descent entering the Vegan food path and the food business; said Ahk Shakadiel Ben Israel, Administrative Taskforce member and Public Relations Representative, “We are well established here but this is not nearly enough, there is room for growth. We will do more outreach, participate in and create more Vegan fares to bring the majority of our people into this space and for them to own it!” “We cannot be complacent!”

When Donald Watson and his wife Dorothy created the word Vegan from the beginning and end of the word VEG-e-tari-AN sixty-four years ago in Yorkshire northern England, United Kingdom and founded the Vegan Society; little did they know that today this worldwide movement will include a whole community of people of African-descent based on a plant-based diet started by Anointed Spiritual Leader Ben Ammi Ben Israel of the Hebrew Israelites at Jerusalem some twenty-three years later in 1967.
___________________________________________
Asked in a ground-breaking interview by ‘Foods for Life, ‘How does your veganism relate to any religious beliefs you may have?’ Watson replied, “I never had very deep ones. I've never been clever enough to be an atheist - an agnostic, yes. Some theologians think that Christ was an Essene. If he was, he was a vegan. If he were alive today, he'd be an itinerant vegan propagandist instead of an itinerant preacher of those days, spreading the message of compassion. I understand that there are now more vegans sitting down to Sunday lunch than there are Anglicans attending Sunday morning service. I think that Anglicans should rejoice at the good news that somebody at least is practising the essential element in the Christian religion - compassion.” Full interview at: foodsforlife.org.uk/people/Donald.watson.vegan.html

'Black Friday' as World Markets Plunge

Stock Meltdown Felt Worldwide
Panic Spreads Across Asia, Europe
Associated Press

Wall Street appeared headed to a sharply lower open Friday, extending a global sell-off on concerns that even low interest rates won't help end the worsening credit crisis. Dow Jones industrials futures plunged 282 points ahead of the opening bell in New York.

Frozen credit markets and a loss of confidence in the world's financial system have caused the Dow to drop 21 percent in just 10 trading days. The blue chip index tumbled 678 points Thursday, and is heading to its worst weekly point drop, and one of its biggest weekly percentage drops, since being created 112 years ago.

"Momentum is running against the market and you don't want to get hit by a train," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. "This is now about market psychology. There's extreme fear and panic out there."

A stream of selling forced exchanges in Austria, Russia and Indonesia to suspend trading, and those that remained opened were hammered. The rout in Australian markets caused traders there to call it "Black Friday."

European stocks sank, with Britain's FTSE-100 down 7.3 percent, German's DAX down 7.7 percent, and France's CAC-40 down 7.5 percent. In Asia, the collapse of Japan's Yamato Life Insurance caused already nervous investors to pull even more money out of the market — the Nikkei 225 fell 9.6 percent.

NYC National Debt Clock runs out of digits

It's a sign of the times
Associated Press

In a sign of the times, the National Debt Clock in New York City has run out of digits to record the growing figure.

As a short-term fix, the digital dollar sign on the billboard-style clock near Times Square has been switched to a figure — the "1" in $10 trillion. It's marking the federal government's current debt at about $10.2 trillion.

The Durst Organization says it plans to update the sign next year by adding two digits. That will make it capable of tracking debt up to a quadrillion dollars.

The late Manhattan real estate developer Seymour Durst put the sign up in 1989 to call attention to what was then a $2.7 trillion debt.

KNN Offers Wholesale Maple Syrup

Maple Syrup can be sweet for your health and pocket
by
Ahtur Keymah
KNN-Cleveland

Maple syrup is one of the many wonders of the world. It is an excellent source of manganese and a good source of zinc. Maple syrup can also be sweet for your health as it is an excellent source of manganese and zinc.

The trace mineral manganese is an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. For example, the key oxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase, which disarms free radicals produced within the mitochondria (the energy production factories within our cells), requires manganese. One ounce of maple syrup supplies 22.0% of the daily value for this very important trace mineral.

Maple syrup is also a good sweetener to use if you are trying to protect the health of your heart. The zinc supplied by maple syrup, in addition to acting as an antioxidant, has other functions that can decrease the progression of arteriosclerosis. Zinc is needed for the proper function of endothelial cells and helps to prevent the endothelial damage caused by oxidized LDL cholesterol and other oxidized fats. Additionally, studies have found that in adults deficient in manganese, the other trace mineral amply supplied in maple syrup, the level of HDL (the "good" cholesterol) is decreased.

Zinc and manganese are important allies in the immune system. Many types of immune cells appear to depend upon zinc for optimal function. Particularly in children, researchers have studied the effects of zinc deficiency (and zinc supplementation) on their immune response and their number of white blood cells

Maple syrup may help to support reproductive health and provides special benefits for men. Zinc is concentrated more highly in the prostate than in any other human tissue, and low levels of zinc in this gland relate to a higher risk for prostate cancer. In fact, zinc is a mineral used therapeutically by healthcare practitioners to help reduce prostate size. Manganese may also play a role in supporting men's health since, as a catalyst in the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol, it also participates in the production of sex hormones, thus helping to maintain reproductive health.

US to Have Military Command Forces in Africa

The head of the new US military command for Africa (Africom) has told the BBC it has "no hidden agenda"
BBC World News

General William Ward said the command would not be used to gain control of African natural resources such as oil.

He also dismissed fears that the US intended to build large military bases on the continent.

Only one country, Liberia, has offered to host Africom, which is coming into full operation at its headquarters in the German city of Stuttgart.

General Ward said the location of the headquarters, for its 1,300 military and civilian personnel, was less of a concern, given the size of the African continent.

The BBC's Adam Mynott says the creation of Africom is a recognition by the US that Africa and security issues on the continent are now a priority.

It reflects concerns about tackling Islamist extremism, securing oil supplies, and countering Chinese influence in Africa, he says.

But its creation has been met with considerable scepticism, our correspondent says.

Dow plummets record 777 as financial rescue fails

Its biggest single-day fall ever
By Tim Paradis
AP Business Writer

The failure of the bailout package in Congress literally dropped jaws on Wall Street and triggered a historic selloff — including a terrifying decline of nearly 500 points in mere minutes as the vote took place, the closest thing to panic the stock market has seen in years.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 777 points Monday, its biggest single-day fall ever, easily beating the 684 points it lost on the first day of trading after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

As uncertainty gripped investors, the credit markets, which provide the day-to-day lending that powers business in the United States, froze up even further.

At the New York Stock Exchange, traders watched with faces tense and mouths agape as TV screens showed the House vote rejecting the Bush administration's $700 billion plan to buy up bad debt and shore up the financial industry.

Largest US Bank Failure in History

WaMu becomes biggest bank to fail in US history
By MADLEN READ
AP Business Writer

As the debate over a $700 billion bank bailout rages on in Washington, one of the nation's largest banks — Washington Mutual Inc. — has collapsed under the weight of its enormous bad bets on the mortgage market.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. seized WaMu on Thursday, and then sold the thrift's banking assets to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for $1.9 billion.

Seattle-based WaMu, which was founded in 1889, is the largest bank to fail by far in the country's history. Its $307 billion in assets eclipse the $40 billion of Continental Illinois National Bank, which failed in 1984, and the $32 billion of IndyMac, which the government seized in July.

One positive is that the sale of WaMu's assets to JPMorgan Chase prevents the thrift's collapse from depleting the FDIC's insurance fund. But that detail is likely to give only marginal solace to Americans facing tighter lending and watching their stock portfolios plunge in the wake of the nation's most momentous financial crisis since the Great Depression.

President Bush went before the US to make a case for $700 billion bailout of the financial system

Our entire economy is in danger
ABC News

President Bush went before the nation this evening to make a case for the $700 billion bailout of the financial system proposed by his administration, which has been met with skepticism by some in Congress and the American public.

"Our entire economy is in danger," Bush said, urging Congress to take quick action and outlining his rationale for the bailout.

Failing to pass a rescue plan, Bush said, would create the risk of a "long and painful recession" -- meaning more foreclosures, lost jobs, business failures, stock losses and difficulty getting loans.

"These are not normal circumstances. The economy is not functioning properly. ... Without immediate action by Congress, America could slip into a financial panic."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the president decided to make the less-than-15-minute address because he wanted to tell Americans directly about the severity and stakes of the financial emergency.

KOY's Regenerative Health Resort Opens in Cape Coast Ghana

Maj. (retd) Quashigah speaks at the inauguration of the “Asasepa' Regenerative Health and Nutrition Programme (RHNP) Centre in Cape Coast
Ghana News Service

The Minister of Health, Major (retd) Courage Quashigah, on Monday stressed the need for Ghanaians to revert to eating time-tested local foods, which contain a lot of nutrients, as well as healthy lifestyles, in order to reverse the current trend of relying on curative rather than preventive health care.

He expressed concern that today “all kinds of horrible food” were being imported into the country, and that many Ghanaians have taken to eating imported rice and over-stored meat products whose nutritional values are suspect and injurious to health, thereby reducing life expectancy.

Maj. (retd) Quashigah expressed these concerns, at the inauguration of the “Asasepa' Regenerative Health and Nutrition Programme (RHNP) Centre/ RHNP Review and Planning Meeting, in Cape Coast, under the theme “ sustaining RHNP in Ghana: the way forward”

.The centre, also known as the Asasepa Regenerative Health Resort Centre, provides a variety of treatments such as detoxification of the body, to “enhance the regeneration of mind, body and soul”, is being operated by the African Hebrew Development Agency (AHDA), under the auspices of the Ministry of Health as part of its programme to promote regenerative health in the country.

The establishment of the centre was encouraged, following the Minister's visit to Dimona in Israel, in 2005, where there is high life expectancy due to the healthy lifestyles of the inhabitants.

Following his visit and in order to promote regenerative health care in the country, the ministry has since then, sent more than 200 Ghanaians from all walks of life including traditional rulers, actors, musicians and journalists to Dimona, to enable them help in disseminating the importance of regenerative health care to the people.

In a message, read on his behalf, the Anointed Spiritual Leader of the African Hebrew Israelite Community, Ben Ammi Ben Israel, also underscored the importance of preventive health care and said the “Dimona study” was a “return to a clean-based diet and lifestyles that ensure proper functioning of the body”.

He called on “leaders of today' to prepare their people to lead worthy lives, devoid of sicknesses, diseases and pollution, and other negative practices which affect healthy living.

Gasoline Shortage Becomes Emergency in Atlanta

Monday evening, many Atlanta area gas stations and were completely out
Southern Political Report

Metro Atlanta’s gas shortage and the panic-buying that’s ensued is compounded by the fact that environmental rules require a special blend of gas for the region - - and that special blend is in short supply. In much of the rest of Georgia, where there are no such rules, there is no shortage, officials say.

A special blend of gas, known as the “Atlanta blend,” is required for Atlanta because of its non-attainment status for air quality. The Atlanta blend includes oxygenates such as ethanol which help fuel burn cleaner.

By Monday evening, many Atlanta area gas stations and convenience marts were completely out of the Atlanta blend while others were seeing lines of 75 to 100 cars waiting for up to two hours for motor fuel.

Some had called on Gov. Sonny Perdue to request a waiver from the EPA to allow the temporary sale of the more plentiful higher-sulfur fuel. Late Monday, the governor’s office said he has made that request.

In addition, spokesman Bert Brantley said the state already has lifted some regulations allowing for drivers to work more hours to get fuel from the main terminal to stations and for heavier trucks to be allowed to carry larger loads than normal.

Nashville pumps dry after panic about rumor of no gas

Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy
CNN New

Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy: An estimated three-fourths of gas stations in the Nashville, Tennessee, area ran dry Friday, victim of an apparent rumor that the city was running out of gas.

"Everybody has just gone nuts," said Mike Williams, executive director of the Tennessee Petroleum Council.

He said he has no idea about the origin of a rumor that there was going to be no gas in Nashville. One reporter called him, saying she had heard that Nashville would be without gas within the hour, he said.

Hearing the rumor, drivers rushed to fill their cars and trucks.

CNN called 13 Nashville gas stations at random. Only two reported having gas, and one said it was almost out. The stations said they were being told they would not get more until Monday or Tuesday.

Katie Givens Kime, visiting from Atlanta, Georgia, was trying to fill up her tank for the trip home when she ran into trouble -- when she was already low on gas.

"We panicked and looked online," she said. "And holy cow, there is no gas in the city. ... It has definitely gripped the city, for sure."

One store clerk told her there was no way she could get gas to go back home, she said.

Williams said some drivers were following gas trucks to see where they were headed, and lines at some stations were a mile long. Fuel was continuing to enter the city, however, as pipelines were working and barges were coming in.

He likened it to Southerners rushing out to stock up on bread and milk when they hear it might snow. As stations began running low, the situation snowballed, he said.

One station reported selling as much gas Friday as it usually does in a weekend, Williams said.

The phenomenon seemed to be isolated to the Nashville area, he said. iReport.com: Is there a gas panic in your area?

Givens Kime said she found a station online that still had gas and waited more than an hour to pump it.

"People were freaked out," she said. A "renegade bunch" of men helped direct traffic to and from the pumps, even taking drivers' cash inside for them. She described people filling cans and other containers as well as cars.

She said that the station was not engaging in price gouging but that "emotions were running very high" among drivers

US Financial Markets Collapse

The World as we know it has changed
by Edmund Conway
Telegraph UK

All eyes are on the financial system, and rightly so. If its collapse continues for much longer the very real risk is that the world faces an economic slump of the likes not seen since the 1930s, with all that entails: mass unemployment, economies shrinking for years rather than mere quarters, protectionism which provokes serious geopolitical turmoil – the possibilities are so horrific it is painful even to write them.

The last time there was a comparable period of economic and financial turmoil, coupled with record inequality both within and between nations was – well, that was the 1930s.

The Securities and Exchange Commission took the dramatic step early Friday of temporarily banning the routine practice of betting against company stocks.

The move, announced on the agency's Web site, may well be unprecedented and a reflection of regulators' concern about the widening scope of the financial crisis as entreaties come from all quarters to stem a swarm of short-selling.

Wall Street awakes to 2 storied firms falling

When Wall Street woke up Monday morning, two more of its storied firms had fallen
By Joe Bel Bruno, Christopher S. Rugaber and Martin Crutsinger
AP Business Writers

When Wall Street woke up Monday morning, two more of its storied firms had fallen.

Lehman Brothers, burdened by $60 billion in soured real-estate holdings, filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court after attempts to rescue the 158-year-old firm failed. Bank of America Corp. said it is snapping up Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. in a $50 billion all-stock transaction.

The demise of the independent Wall Street institutions came as shock waves from the 14-month-old credit crisis roiled the U.S. financial system six months after the collapse of Bear Stearns.

The world's largest insurance company, American International Group Inc., also was forced into a restructuring.

And a global consortium of banks, working with government officials in New York, announced a $70 billion pool of funds to lend to troubled financial companies.

The aim, according to participants who spoke to The Associated Press, was to prevent a worldwide panic on stock and other financial exchanges.

Ten banks -- Bank of America, Barclays, Citibank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and UBS -- each agreed to provide $7 billion "to help enhance liquidity and mitigate the unprecedented volatility and other challenges affecting global equity and debt markets."

The Importance of Chewing your Food

Digestion starts from the moment you place your food in your mouth
By Shmerah E. Keymah R.N.
KNN-Cleveland

Science has recently been reviewing the facts about chewing your food and there are some interesting reasons why you should take your time over dinner.

Digestion starts from the moment you place your food in your mouth. Your saliva produces an enzyme called amylase. All the simple starches in your food are broken down by this enzyme and carried into the bloodstream directly through the flesh in your mouth. The more you chew your food, the more completely this digestive process takes place. Chewing also cleans your food before it hits your stomach - saliva is antibacterial.

Chewing sends messages to your stomach about the nature and amount of food that is about to be digested.

If the stomach acids are not working sufficiently - which is often the case in those following a western-styled diet and gobbling it hastily on the run - food can remain in undigested clumps and move into the intestines where it rots and festers away, creating ill health.

According to university studies, chewing stimulates the endocrine system, keeping your hormones in balance for a happier, younger-looking you. In particular, the parotid glands just under your cheekbones release a cell-rejuvenating substance.

The more you chew, the more oxygen is sent to the brain. Scientists have also discovered that munching is magnificent for the memory. It may help keep dementia in the elderly at bay. It seems that the more you chew, the more short-term memory cells you develop. When people get older, they lose their teeth and start eating mushy foods. The short-term memory may be compromised because of this simple change in diet and behaviour.

So when is enough enough? How do you know when you've munched to the max? Advice from different health care practitioners varies from 32 to 100 chews.

Texas Prepares for a Gigantic Hurricane Ike

Gigantic Hurricane Ike takes aim at the Houston area
By MICHAEL GRACZYK
Associated Press Writer

Cars and trucks streamed inland and chemical companies buttoned up their plants Thursday as a gigantic Hurricane Ike took aim at the heart of the U.S. refining industry and threatened to send a wall of water crashing toward Houston.

Nearly 1 million people along the Texas coast were ordered to evacuate ahead of the storm, which was expected to strike late Friday or early Saturday. But in a calculated risk aimed at avoiding total gridlock, authorities told most people in the nation's fourth-largest city to just hunker down.

Ike was steering almost directly for Houston, where gleaming skyscrapers, the nation's biggest refinery and NASA's Johnson Space Center lie in areas vulnerable to wind and floodwaters. Forecasters said the storm was likely to come ashore as a Category 3, with winds up to 130 mph.

First protons fired at largest particle collider
Associated Press

GENEVA: Scientists have fired the first protons into a 27-kilometer (17-mile) tunnel at the world's largest particle collider in science's next great step to understand the makeup of the universe.

Project leader Lyn Evans gave the order to send the protons into the US$3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider below the Swiss-French border early Wednesday.

Scientists hope it will provide the necessary power to smash the components of atoms so that they can see how they are made.

The startup has been eagerly awaited by 9,000 physicists around the world who will conduct experiments here.

Some skeptics have said they fear the collisions of protons could eventually imperil Earth.

Exercise 'tackles flawed memory'

Exercise may help improve mental performance in adults with mild memory problems, research suggests
BBC News

A University of Melbourne team tested the impact of a home-based physical activity programme on 138 volunteers aged 50 and over with memory problems.

Those who took part showed a modest improvement in cognitive function compared to those who did not.

The Journal of the American Medical Association study suggests exercise may help ward off severe mental decline.

Exercise is known to help keep the cardiovascular system healthy, and may help boost cognitive function by boosting blood supply to the brain.

Writing in the journal, the researchers said: "Unlike medication, which was found to have no significant effect on mild cognitive impairment at 36 months, physical activity has the advantage of health benefits that are not confined to cognitive function alone, as suggested by findings on depression, quality of life, falls, cardiovascular function, and disability."

Teen Suicide Rates In U.S. Rising

Suicide rates among US teens soar
Emax Health

Suicide rates among US teens significantly rose after a 15 year decline, urging healthcare professionals to look into reasons of the increase. There are separate factors that can lead to the rise of teen suicide, but in most cases it is a bunch of several reasons, which needs to be clarified and treated as soon as possible.

Researchers from the Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio found that the years 2004 and 2005 had the highest teenage suicide rates, with 326 additional cases in 2004 and 292 additional cases in 2005. The estimates were made according to data of 1669 and 2003 teens and were expecting less cases for 2004. In 2005 teenage suicide cases showed a 5% decline compared to 2004, but the rates were still too high. Overall, the year 2004 reported 18% increased cases, which urges the need to do more for teen mental health and depression treatment.

More hurricanes on the way to the US

Expect five tropical storms and four hurricanes, two of them major
Associated Press

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Colorado hurricane researchers are forecasting five tropical storms in the Atlantic this month, including four hurricanes, two of them major.

Former Colorado State University climatologist William Gray said yesterday that would be nearly twice as busy as an average September. Gray has been issuing hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University for 25 years.

Tropical storm Ike, which formed Monday, and tropical storm Josephine, which formed yesterday, count toward the five storms in the September forecast, said Phil Klotzbach, a member of the research team and author of the September report.

Klotzbach said Hanna, which reached hurricane strength Monday before weakening to a tropical storm yesterday, counts toward the four hurricanes forecast for September. However, it isn't included in September's five expected tropical storms because it initially held that status in August.

KNN's Green Tip for the Week

Drink more water from reusable glassware
KNN Green Team

It's great for your bank account, your health, and your planet.

The average American consumed more than 400 beverage bottles and cans in 2006, leaving behind wasted glass, plastic, steel, and aluminum. That adds up to excessive amounts of fossil fuels and hydropower for mining, processing, refining, shaping, shipping, storing, refrigerating, and disposing of those materials.

Of course, changing your drinking habits both at home and at work is applicable to just about every other habit, as well. You've heard it before and you'll hear it again: Reduce, reuse, and recycle.

It's Time to Start Growing Your Own

USA Regulators to allow radiation for spinach, lettuce
By Michael Doyle and Robert Rodriguez
Goggle News

FDA: Irradiating Spinach, Lettuce OK to Kill Germs

Federal regulators are expected today to let processors for the first time use radiation to kill bacteria in spinach and iceberg lettuce.

The step will protect consumers and growers, who have been battered by E. coli outbreaks in recent years.

But are shoppers ready for irradiated vegetables?

Experts point out that meat and some other foods have been treated with radiation for years, with little or no resistance from shoppers. But that may be simply because few are aware of the practice.

Anuradha Prakash, an assistant professor at Chapman University and an expert on food irradiation, said consumers are ready to make their food safer given the outbreaks that have occurred in the past few years related to fresh produce.

"But there will have to be lots of consumer education before they will accept it," Prakash said.
Christine Bruhn, a University of California food science marketing specialist and director of the UC Davis Center for Consumer Research, agreed. She said that while some consumers are ready, most are unaware of the practice.

"Maybe the science community has not spoken enough about this," Bruhn said. "But they will be doing it more and more now."

The Food and Drug Administration is set to formally give the green light today to a practice officials have concluded is safe. The long-awaited decision comes in the wake of high-profile bacterial outbreaks involving tainted California greens.

Israel’s President Pays Historic Visit to Hebrew Israelite Community

The President will greet and address community members
KNN Staff Correspondent
Ministry of Information
KNN-Dimona

[Dimona – Aug 19, 2008] Israel’s President Shimon Peres will visit the Hebrew Israelite Community in Dimona Thursday, August 21, as part of a special tour of the Negev. The visit serves as a stage for a celebration of the President’s 84th birthday, marked August 2.

The community of 3,000 former African Americans is a featured stop in the President’s tour of the Negev Desert of town, which has become synonymous with the community members who arrived nearly 40 years ago, led by anointed spiritual leader, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel.

The President will greet community members, get an historical presentation chronicling the 4 decades of the Hebrew community’s existence in Israel, enjoy a performance by the choir and finally address community members. He will share the stage with Ben Ammi and Dimona mayor, Meir Cohen.

Over the years, Peres’ has been keen on developing the Negev, seeing it as key to the future strength of the state. In recent months Hebrew Community leaders have been meeting with Israel’s government officials putting finishing touches on plans to build a new settlement within the city of Dimona, to further showcase their unique lifestyle. The community hosts between 300 and 400 visitors each month from all over the world who come to partake of the pleasant atmosphere and their keys to healthy living, including a vegan-diet and natural food production, organic agriculture, and the most popular music groups in the country. The community has been proclaimed a “miracle in the desert” by the US Congress Human Rights Caucus and an “island of sanity,” by Israeli media.

Peres will also visit city hall, a local communications training center, and the Dimona library in the day-long excursion. At the end of the day, the town will host a mass birthday celebration for the famed octogenarian. “You can’t come to Dimona and not visit the Hebrew community,” a spokesman for the Dimona municipality said. “For people all over the world they have put the city on the map. They are the face of Dimona.”

Lesson #3 - What is the Love of Yah?
by Ahtur Keymah
KNN-Cleveland

Consider the following excerpt from "God and the Law of Relativity" by Ben Ammi:

"How does one go about receiving Yah's love? To receive the fullness of Yah's love, you must give yours in return. Yah's love is a priceless treasure, a most expensive pearl. When you get it, you will have given all that you have in your possession. Your love of Yah will then become a light into the reality of Yah's truth. You must become active on its behalf, with all your heart, soul, and might.

In the beginning it will take great courage to follow what will seem to be a lonely path, led by the will of Yah, to evince a Holy people unto the world. You will move from a casual, once-a-week religion to an undivided and all-consuming commitment to an entirely new way of life, founded upon "The Love of Yah." This love will cause true surrender and compliance with His Most Holy and Perfect will."

Question: How does one love Yah with all of their heart, all of their soul, and all of their might?

Google to Invest in Geothermal

The company is investing a little over $10 million in the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems
by By Tom Zeller Jr.
New York Times Science

Google.org, the public-spirited division of Google.com, charged with addressing “climate change, poverty and emerging disease,” is using the backdrop of the National Clean Energy Summit here in Las Vegas to announce a new round of clean energy financing.

In a nutshell, the company is investing an arguably modest sum — a little over $10 million — in the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, or EGS. The technology differs from “traditional” geothermal in that rather than exploiting existing wells of earthbound steam and hot water, EGS drills deep — miles down — to access layers of heated granite that exist underfoot everywhere on the planet. Water can be circulated downward for heating, and then upward to drive turbines and generate electricity.

Controlling Toxins in the Home

Is your Home Healthy?
by Perdita Jay Fisher, DMD
Fisher Wellness Center
KNN - St. Louis

If your home is typical, you probably use dozens of cleaning and personal care products, purchased at the local grocery store, which contain chemical ingredients that could be harmful to your health and the health of your loved ones.

Scientist and doctors have discovered that there is a connection between our health and the use of common everyday household chemicals.

Have we always been this sick?

· Birth defects are on the rise

· One in three Americans will suffer with cancer, the # 2 killer of adults and the leading cause of death from disease in children

· Infertility is increasing

· Asthma rate has tripled-20-30 million afflicted

· Attention Deficit Disorder in adults and children is rising

There is a connection between household chemicals and your health

Our greatest exposure to chemicals is right in our own homes! We breathe chemical vapors from household products in the air. Neither personal care products nor their ingredients are reviewed or approved before they are sold to the public. They wouldn’t sell if it wasn’t safe…..would they?

-Of the 17,000 chemicals that appear in common household products, only 30% have been adequately tested from their negative effects on our health.

-A product that kills 50% of lab animals through ingestion or inhalation can still receive the federal regulatory designation “non-toxic”

-No law requires manufactures to list the exact ingredients on the package label

-The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health analyzed 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products. The results were as follows..

884 of chemicals were toxic
314 caused biological mutation
218 caused reproductive complications
376 caused skin and eye irritations
778 caused acute toxicity
148 caused tumors

See: www.cdc.gov/noish

-The FDA cannot regulate a personal care product until after it is released into the marketplace

-The FDA cannot require companies to do safety testing on their personal care products before they are sold to the public

-The FDA cannot require recalls of harmful personal care products from the marketplace

THEY WOULDN’T SELL IT IF IT WASN’T SAFE….. WOULD THEY????????

Beware of Aerosols! One common ingredient is Formaldehyde.

The MSDS for formaldehyde warns: suspected carcinogen; may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through skin. Formaldehyde is a common ingredient in baby shampoo, bubble bath, deodorants, perfume, cologne, hair dye, mouthwash, toothpaste, hair spray and many other personal care items.

Home is where the chemicals are

-Ninety percent of all poisonings occur at home between the hours of 4 and 10 pm, when children are home from school and playing in the house!

-Poisoning is the number one accidental killer in the home.

We must be cautious of introducing more toxins in our physical environment as we clean our homes! We can be harmed by ingestion, inhalation or absorption through the skin.

What can you do?

Use a line of household products that are not only safe, but just as effective as your toxic products.

Call us at 314-837-9777 or visit our online store at http://www.fisherwellensscenter.com/ to get natural, environmentally safe, and concentrated products to clean your home.

Married Folks Still the Healthiest

People who've exchanged wedding vows tend to be healthier
By Serena Gordon
HealthDay Reporter
Washington Post.com

People who've exchanged wedding vows tend to be healthier than their single, divorced or widowed peers, but new research shows that health gap may be narrowing.

Interviews with today's never-married men suggest they are healthier than never-married guys were three decades ago, researchers say. And that's helping single males gain some ground, in terms of their health, compared to married people.

"One of the most-often documented facts is that married people are healthier than non-married people, but the difference between married and unmarried people has changed over the past few decades," said the study's lead author, Hui Liu, an assistant professor and sociologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

The findings are in the September issue of theJournal of Health and Social Behavior.

Liu said there are two theories as to why married people report better health. One is that being married gives you more access to social support and economic resources. The other is that being divorced or widowed hurts health.

"In general, marriage tends to make people healthier, happier and richer, and that's especially true for men," said Scott Wetzler, vice chairman of psychiatry and behavioral science, and head of the "Supporting Healthy Marriage" program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

But because trends in marriage have changed so dramatically over the past few decades, with more people opting not to marry or marrying at later ages, Liu wanted to assess what, if any, effects these changes might have on physical health.

Run for Your Life

Exercisers live longer and with fewer disabilities, study finds
By Amanda Gardner
Health Day Reporter
ABC News

It may, in fact, be possible to outrun death -- and even the creeping ravages of time -- at least for a while.

Research spanning two decades has found that older runners live longer and suffer fewer disabilities than healthy non-runners.

And the findings probably apply to a variety of aerobic exercises, including walking, said the study authors, from Stanford University School of Medicine, whose findings are published in the Aug. 11 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"This is telling you that being a runner, being active is going to reduce your disability, and it's going to increase your survival," said Marcia Ory, professor of social and behavioral health at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health in College Station. "Late in life, you still see the benefit of vigorous activity."

'Sunshine Vitamin' May Cut Death Risk

Vitamin D Appears to Cut Risk of Dying Early
By Joseph Brownstein
ABC News Medical Unit

In the newest in a line of studies showing the potential value of vitamin D, new research from Johns Hopkins University shows that not getting enough of the so-called "sunshine vitamin" may increase the risk of early death by more than a quarter.

Researchers used data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and looked at people's vitamin D levels and then death from various causes. While the risk of death for people with low vitamin D from any single cause was only slightly elevated, the broader picture showed a 26 percent increase in death rates.

"[Low] vitamin D levels seem to confer an increased risk of dying from any cause," said Dr. Erin Michos, a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins, and one of the lead investigators of the study.

She said that the study showed an association between low vitamin D and death from heart disease, and said further study may reveal vitamin D to be a sign of impending heart disease.

Many doctors cite the importance of vitamin D because of the relatively high levels of deficiency among Americans. A 2005 study from Drew University and UCLA showed that more than 41 percent of men and 53 percent of women had mildly or severely deficient levels of vitamin D.

And those chronic deficiencies are why people should monitor vitamin D levels, according to O'Keefe.

"We're not designed to be moles; we're designed to be outdoor creatures," he said. "Prudent sun exposure not only feels good, it's good for vitamin D levels."

Isaac Hayes Found Dead

A family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill
AOL News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 10) -Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. He was 65.

A family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, according to the sheriff's office. The cause of death was not immediately known.

In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, for what became known as urban-contemporary music and for romantic crooners like Barry White. And he was rapping before there was rap.

His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show "South Park."

The album "Hot Buttered Soul" made Hayes a star in 1969. His shaven head, gold chains and sunglasses gave him a compelling visual image.

Bernie Mac dies at 50

Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia
By Kelley L. Carter and Glenn Jeffers
Chicago Tribune

Comedian and Chicago native Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist confirmed.

Mac, 50, had been hospitalized for about a week at Northwestern Hospital, according to his spokeswoman. A few years ago, Mac disclosed that he suffered from sarcoidosis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue, most often in the lungs.

The comic born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough could cut an imposing figure. He stood six-foot-three, was built like a fullback and carried himself with a bouncer's reticence. But perhaps the strongest weapon in the Chicago comedian's arsenal was that voice, that amalgam of thought and a delivery that could rise like a tidal wave, outpace a Gatling gun and remained, to his last days, loud and unapologetic.

He wasn't scared, he told us time and again, to tell anyone what he thought, to say what others were afraid to say. That fearlessness wasn't always welcome, considering Mac didn't get his big break until his 30s. But when he did, the comic skyrocketed to success in stand-up, television and the big screen.

Mac is survived by his wife Rhonda McCullough, their daughter, Je'Niece, a son-in-law and a granddaughter, Jasmine.

Black Hebrews Establish Village of Peace in Israel

This thriving community serves as a model for communities around the world
By Mario Starks
Globalsoulpower.com

The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, also known as the Kingdom of Yah, arrived in Dimona, Israel, in 1969. This new community in Israel consisted originally of African-Americans who first migrated from America to Liberia (West Africa) during the heightened Pan-African movement of the 60s and was founded by Ben Ammi Ben-Israel.

While in Liberia, the group settled and purged themselves of the negative mental and physical conditions that were present in their former home. After their settlement period in Liberia, the small community made plans to migrate onward, making the last and final portion of their journey home to Israel - land which they consider geographically a part of Northeast Africa.

The group's lifestyle places great emphasis on diet, spirituality and family. They maintain a vegan diet and exercise frequently. The community harvests its own food, administer their own schools, and operate their own hospital, a pre-natal/post-natal care facility.

One notable achievement that has attracted the attention of scientist and health practitioners is the undisputed status of good health that exists among the community's residents. For example, "a medical study conducted in Dimona by US university researchers in 1998 found the community was largely free of illnesses typical to African-Americans such as hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol" reports Avida Landau of the South African Star newspaper.

Doctors found that only 6 percent of those in the vegan Dimona community suffered from high blood pressure, compared to 30 percent of black men and women in America. Further, only 5 percent of the African Israelite community were obese, compared to 32 percent of the black community in America (study from 1998). Proper health and habits that they believe serve the well-being of the community are emphasized.

The African Hebrew Israelites continue to expand their presence throughout the world with community centers and their own chain of vegan restaurants in Israel, Ghana, US Virgin Islands, and throughout the United States (Chicago, Houston, Washington DC, Atlanta, St. Louis, Cleveland, Tallahassee, Charleston, Vicksburg).
