Celebrating Yom L’Mokereem with Royal Appreciation

by Zia
Antigua Sun Newspaper

So, my first thought was, “I really need to get some African evening attire.”

There’s something so regal and sophisticated about men and women adorned in the beautiful garments, with their unique and intricate designs that are synonymous with African beauty and pride. So, even though I would’ve been “decked out” by Western standards, I couldn’t help but feel a bit underdressed in the company of men and women who had gathered to celebrate Yom L’Mokereem.

But garments and accessories were the last thing on anyone’s mind as members and friends of the Hebrew Israelite community gathered to celebrate a season of love.

Notably, the day itself was filled with celebration, as millions around the world show their appreciation and love for women in recognition of International Women’s Day; but within the millions, there were also thousands who recognised the day as not only a celebration or appreciation for women, but appreciation for everyone.

The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, abiding by the laws and lifestyle ascribed in the Old Testament, do not recognise nor celebrate Western events such as Christmas or Valentine's.

Yom L’Mokereem is a season of appreciation, where gifts are exchanged and people are celebrated. So without the hoopla of a fuss that accompanies the frenzy of Valentine’s Day or Christmas, gifts are exchanged “just because I appreciate you."

The Divine Day of Appreciation was celebrated in Antigua at the Saffron Restaurant in Jolly Harbour. With a healthy and scrumptious spread of vegan delights, the chatter was lively, the merriment in abundance and the genuine celebration for life, friendships and a close relationship with God was evident.

With prayers offered to God in the Hebrew tongue, the evening followed with the dinner, and then entertainment in the form of poetry, amusing skits and songs.

The members of the Hebrew Israelite community will tell you that their beliefs are not of a religious system, but a lifestyle based on the Old Testament. Theirs is a life filled with peace, an appreciation for life, education and the performing arts. But most importantly, with an offering of “Halleluyah” being heard ever so often, the most important element of their life is their praise of and relationship with Yah. In case you’re wondering, “Yah” is the Hebrew word for God.

One of the skits that I enjoyed was a two-man drama of one of the member's life changing experience when he was introduced to the “Kingdom of Yah”. Once living a life of parties, regular clubbing at Web (remember that night club, pretty close to where the Savoy Nightclub is located). Overwhelmed and completely mesmerised by his fellow Antiguan’s life change, Ammi Ben Israel, the young man returned to the God of his childhood days, accepted the teachings of the Old Testament and traded in his old Western influenced lifestyle, for one of peace, health and an enriching relationship with God.

Even though some may still not be able to understand, appreciate or even respect the Hebrew Israelite community and their lifestyle, there is a valuable lesson that we could all take from them and their celebration of Yom L’Mokereem. The lesson? To appreciate each other more, for no reason other than pure appreciation. The best type of appreciation or gift exchange? The one that’s given for no other sake than the sake of giving and showing the people around you that you love and appreciate them and their presence in their lives.
Happy Yom L’Mokereem to you from me!

Quarter of U.S. teen girls have sex-related disease

Forty-eight percent of black teen-age girls were infectedBy
by Will Dunham
Reuters News Service

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than one in four U.S. teen girls is infected with at least one sexually transmitted disease, and the rate is highest among blacks, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

An estimated 3.2 million U.S. girls ages 14 and 19 -- about 26 percent of that age group -- have a sexually transmitted infection such as the human papillomavirus or HPV, chlamydia, genital herpes or trichomoniasis, the CDC said.

Forty-eight percent of black teen-age girls were infected, compared to 20 percent of whites and 20 percent of Mexican American girls. The report did not give data on the broader U.S. Hispanic population.

"What we found is alarming," the CDC's Dr. Sara Forhan, who led the study, told reporters. "This means that far too many young women are at risk for the serious health effects of untreated STDs, including infertility and cervical cancer."

Probe Finds Drugs in Drinking Water

A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water
AOL News
Submittted by A. Zemrah E. Moriel

A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

But the presence of so many prescription drugs — and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen — in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.

In the course of a five-month inquiry, the AP discovered that drugs have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas — from Southern California to Northern New Jersey, from Detroit to Louisville, Ky.

Here are some of the key test results obtained by the AP:

--Officials in Philadelphia said testing there discovered 56 pharmaceuticals or byproducts in treated drinking water, including medicines for pain, infection, high cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems. Sixty-three pharmaceuticals or byproducts were found in the city's watersheds.

--Anti-epileptic and anti-anxiety medications were detected in a portion of the treated drinking water for 18.5 million people in Southern California.

--Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey analyzed a Passaic Valley Water Commission drinking water treatment plant, which serves 850,000 people in Northern New Jersey, and found a metabolized angina medicine and the mood-stabilizing carbamazepine in drinking water.

--A sex hormone was detected in San Francisco's drinking water.

--The drinking water for Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas tested positive for six pharmaceuticals.

--Three medications, including an antibiotic, were found in drinking water supplied to Tucson, Ariz.

The situation is undoubtedly worse than suggested by the positive test results in the major population centers documented by the AP.

Winter Storm Pounds Cleveland

Up to 2 feet of snow in some areas
KNN-Cleveland

The storm pounding the county is only expected to intensify as the night wears on, and the National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch starting at 4 a.m.

A winter storm warning will continue through midnight Saturday.

The service is predicting 6 to 10 inches of snow in midday Saturday in our area — and as much as 10 to 15 inches in areas east of Interstate 71.

Freezing arctic winds of 20 to 30 mph are also expected to rake the area, leading to horrible visibility and drifting snow for drivers.

Blizzard conditions could set in Saturday as winds increase to 30 to 40 mph. Blizzard warnings are only issued when the weather service expects incredibly heavy snow to fall for several hours at a time.

The storm has already grounded dozens of flights at Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland.

Airport Director of Marketing Todd Payne said Continental Airlines has cancelled 60 percent of its affiliated flights for tonight and Southwest has cancelled 50 percent of its flights.

Hopkins remains open and a fleet of 25 plows are working to keep runways clear, Payne said. But those expecting to depart should anticipate delays, he said.

1 in every 100 adults in America are in jail

Study shows prison numbers high
NBC News

WASHINGTON -- For the first time in history more than one in every 100 adults in America are in jail or prison -- a fact that significantly impacts state budgets without delivering a clear return on public safety.

According to a new report released by the Pew Center on the States' Public Safety Performance Project, at the start of 2008, 2,319,258 adults were held in American prisons or jails, or one in every 99.1 men and women, according to the study. During 2007, the prison population rose by more than 25,000 inmates. In addition to detailing state and regional prison growth rates, Pew's report, One in 100: Behind Bars in America 2008, identifies how corrections spending compares to other state investments, why it has increased, and what some states are doing to limit growth in both prison populations and costs while maintaining public safety.

As prison populations expand, costs to states are on the rise. Last year alone, states spent more than $49 billion on corrections, up from $11 billion 20 years before. However, the national recidivism rate remains virtually unchanged, with about half of released inmates returning to jail or prison within three years. And while violent criminals and other serious offenders account for some of the growth, many inmates are low-level offenders or people who have violated the terms of their probation or parole.

Yom L’mokireem

By Yehuda H. Cohane
KNN Staff

Around the world this week, many are celebrating Yom L’mokireem (a day of appreciation). The festive season / day, being officially inaugurated in Jerusalem sunset 27 February 2008, will find family, loved ones, admirers and well-wishers alike exclaiming “Khag Samayahk” or “Yom L’mokireem Samayahk”, loosely translated from Hebrew to mean have a happy joyous day of appreciation.

All too often we as members of the human family take each other for granted. Never really taking time to convey our gratitude or display in the midst of one another a great attitude towards the creator for blessing us with wonderful family and friends.

That is why contained in the Hebrew root (Yud, Koof, Resh =Yakar) from which the word mokireem derives, the Hebrew thought causes us to glean understanding when we take a cursory glimpse at the subsequent definitions that grow out of that root:

From Yud, Koof, Resh = valuable, expensive, dear, costly, beloved, rare, scarce, precious, dignity, to respect, to honor, to appreciate, to elevate the price of.

We must take a moment this season to introspect and inquire of ourselves if any of these aforementioned definitions truly embellish our thoughts of our brothers and sisters in this great-extended human family of ours. For thoughts such as this are the seedbeds of a heavenly new world.

African Hebrew Israelites

American black community finds spiritual home in the Negev
By John L. Jackson, Jr.
and Ahmadiel Ben Yehuda
MyJewishLearning.com

African Hebrew Israelites, often referred to as Black Hebrews, are the largest organized group of African-American expatriates living anywhere in the world. The African Hebrew Israelites are the followers of Ben Ammi Ben Israel, who they believe received a vision in 1966 in which he was directed to return African-American descendants of the ancient Israelites to the Promised land, and to establish the long-awaited Kingdom of God on earth.

By 1967, Ben Ammi convinced approximately 400 African-Americans (largely from Chicago) to leave, America (known as the "Lands of the Great Captivity"), and travel to Israel. The first group of "returnees" arrived in Israel in 1969, after a brief sojourn in the wilderness of Liberia.

The movement can be understood in the context of the "great awakening" to historical roots and cultural identity that African-Americans underwent in the 1960s. The Hebrew Israelites maintain their return was not just to their ancestral homeland of Israel (which they consider northeastern Africa), but to a way of life that would testify to the power of God.

While only approximately 3,000 saints (as they call themselves) reside in Israel, thousands live across the US, Caribbean, Europe and Africa and identify with the community, living according to their doctrinal tenets.

Members of the community are vegans. Tobacco, drugs, and alcoholic beverages aside from naturally fermented wines are avoided. Regular exercise (three times weekly) is mandatory for all adults, as is a monthly massage. No-salt days, sugarless weeks, and live food weeks dot their calendar. According to the community's belief system, the choice of relationships, clothing, and music all matter where health is concerned, and every effort is made to create an environment conducive to healing. This consciousness is woven into the lifestyle, resulting in an admired comprehensive health literacy. In 2006, Ghana's Ministry of Health summoned a team from Dimona to assist in the development of a health and nutrition program crucial to that West African country.

Their confidence and calm belied the fact that they carried on their shoulders the hopes and fears of a people. And while some had never been to a jail before they were not afraid. This was their time to prove God was with them and no matter what… they were up to the challenge.

The incredible, inspiring story of the Ramle 7 recounts one of those rare moments in history when the principled stand of a few encapsulates the longings of generations. Airline in first biofuel flight

The first flight by a commercial airline to be powered partly by biofuel has taken place
BBC News

A Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet has flown between London's Heathrow and Amsterdam using fuel derived from a mixture of Brazilian babassu nuts and coconuts.

Environmentalists have branded the flight a publicity stunt and claim biofuel cultivation is not sustainable.

Earlier this month, Airbus tested another alternative fuel - a synthetic mix of gas-to-liquid.
Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson said the flight marked a "vital breakthrough" for the entire airline industry.

"This pioneering flight will enable those of us who are serious about reducing our carbon emissions to go on developing the fuels of the future," he said.

But he said fully commercial biofuel flights were likely to use feedstocks such as algae rather than the mix used on the passenger-less flight.

Virgin's Boeing 747 had one of its four engines connected to an independent biofuel tank that it said could provide 20% of the engine's power.

"Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which your Yah commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

That thou mightest fear thy Yah, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Yah of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our Yah, is one: And thou shalt love thy Yah with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

U.S. sees largest meat recall in history

The subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs
By Greg Risling
Associated Press Writer
Sbmitted by Laviyah E. Nahum-KNN

LOS ANGELES - The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse, the subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs.

Officials said it was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats.

"Today marks the largest beef recall in U.S. history, and it involves the national school lunch program and other federal food and nutrition programs," said U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, chairman of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. "This begs the question: how much longer will we continue to test our luck with weak enforcement of federal food safety regulations?"

Erykah Badu finds kinship with Hebrew Israelites

She made a point of seeking out the Hebrew Israelites
By Lamia Lahoud
The Jerusalem Post

When R&B star Erykah Badu landed in Israel this month, she wasn't only interested in performing to promote her upcoming album, New Amerykah. She also made a point of seeking out the Hebrew Israelites (also known as the Black Hebrews), the Dimona-based group of African Americans who settled in Israel nearly 40 years ago.

"I know the community mostly for its art and culture… and of course its food, I eat at their restaurants," she said.

After meeting with several members of the Hebrew Israelite community for lunch at the Taste of Life restaurant in downtown Tel Aviv, Badu remarked, "they make you feel like taking off your shoes... it feels like home."

Badu, of course, isn't the only international star to have taken a special interest in the Hebrew Israelite community. Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Motown legend Kim Weston are among some of the other big names who have been drawn to visit and perform with the Dimona settlers. When asked why musicians like herself feel attracted to the community, Badu retorted, "You mean musicians of color? Well, we all come from the same source... we are all related.

"As musicians we already work for a higher source, whether we know it or not, and when musicians come to the Holy Land and find other African Americans doing the same, they feel connected. Their music comes from the same source - Africa and spirituals. There is something in the tones - the frequency of tones that brings you home - it's genetically encoded."

This year the Hebrew Israelites are celebrating the anniversary of their integration into Israeli society by building their first kibbutz, where they will grow organic vegetables to support their vegan diet and nurture the many musical talents in their community. Today they number 3,000, and are the largest African American community outside the US - praying to the God of Israel, sending their children to the Israeli army, and of course, creating soul music.

Badu was amazed to learn about the success of the community in Israel and was especially interested in meeting its musicians, who are known for their Songs of Deliverance, primarily aimed at praising "Yah", the God of Israel. For Badu, whose music stems from a similarly spiritual perspective, there was an immediate kinship. "I am the first soul artist in America to address music from a spiritual teacher perspective," she said. "I consider myself a student, but my music comes from a teacher's point of view."

Badu was also eager to philosophize, if somewhat cryptically, about the positive changes unfolding for African Americans around the world. "Change is coming, there is definitely something happening... it's something good. It's like we have paid our cosmic debt as a people, as if our chains are being shattered," she explained, leaning forward and shaking the many bracelets around her wrist.

"Americans have an election year coming up. Barack Obama, a man of color, is running for president. He came out of nowhere. And here in Israel, the Hebrew Israelite community have reached the biblically symbolic 40 year landmark… Astrologically we are moving into the age of Aquarius, which represents knowledge and we have just completed the year of Pisces, which represents belief. If you believe in something strongly enough, it will come to pass."

Her astrological beliefs hold true, she said, for the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. "We all need to take a united decision, and then make a plan and implement it. It may take a few generations, but then it too will come to pass."

After meeting with the Hebrew Israelites, Badu and members of her crew held hands and prayed together in Hebrew. "Later this year in Dimona," she promised, saying that she would definitely return for a visit to the community.

Badu's double album New Amerykah will be released in stages, the first disc coming out on February 26.

News Release: To Our Extended Family and Friends:

All members of the African Hebrew Israelite Community are safe and accounted for
Ministry of Information
Washington DC

Thank you for the many prayers, calls and letters of support in the wake of the recent suicide bombing attack in the city of Dimona, Israel. Please know that all members of the African Hebrew Israelite Community, the Village of Peace are safe and accounted for.

On Feb. 4, a suicide bomber entered the commercial center in the middle of town and detonated a belt of explosives. Another attacker was killed by security police on the scene before he could do the same. As a result, one person was killed in addition to the assailants and 10 were wounded. Our hearts go out to the families of those harmed. While some were in the area, none of the brothers and sisters from our community, were harmed in this, the first ever incident of its kind in Dimona’s 50 year-history.

Dimona remains home to a diverse population - Jews, Arabs, Moroccans, Indians, Russians, Ethiopians and more -- who have lived without violence over the years. With the Village of Peace at its center, Dimona will remain the beacon of hope and light to so many, around the world who long to see peace and sensitivity prevail in a troubled world.

Thank you

"Euros Accepted" signs pop up in New York City

The latest example that the U.S. dollar just ain't what it used to be
Reuters News Service

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In the latest example that the U.S. dollar just ain't what it used to be, some shops in New York City have begun accepting euros and other foreign currency as payment for merchandise.

"We had decided that money is money and we'll take it and just do the exchange whenever we can with our bank," Robert Chu, owner of East Village Wines, told Reuters television.

The increasingly weak U.S. dollar, once considered the king among currencies, has brought waves of European tourists to New York with money to burn and looking to take advantage of hugely favorable exchange rates.

"We didn't realize we would take so much in and there were that many people traveling or having euros to bring in. But some days, you'd be surprised at how many euros you get," Chu said.

"Now we have to get familiar with other currencies and the (British) pound and the Canadian dollars we take," he said.

While shops in many U.S. towns on the Canadian border have long accepted Canadian currency and some stores on the Texas-Mexico border take pesos, the acceptance of foreign money in Manhattan was unheard of until recently.

Not far from Chu's downtown wine emporium, Billy Leroy of Billy's Antiques & Props said the vast numbers of Europeans shopping in the neighborhood got him thinking, "My God, I should take euros in at the store."

Leroy doesn't even bother to exchange them.

"I'm happy if I take in 200 euros, because what I do is keep them," he said. "So when I go back to Paris, I don't have to go through the nightmare of going to an exchange place."

The Large US Companies That May Disappear In 2008

Here are the big ones that probably won't make it
24/7 Wall St.

Firestone. American Motors. Texaco. Pan Am. Worldcom. At one point or another these large American companies were at the top of their industries. Pan Am was the leading global airline for decades. All are gone. Some were sold off. Others went bankrupt. Who could have predicted it?

There are several iconic US companies that may well not exist at the end of 2008. Some may not even make it halfway through the year. Not all will go out of business. Some may simply be auctioned off in pieces. Others may be bought. These companies will not exist in their current forms as they are known to their shareholders and consumers now.

When a company ceases to exist as an independent entity, it is not necessarily bad for shareholders. Some may be worth more in parts. Often a bust-up or merger is what brings owners the most money.

Here are the big ones that probably won't make it.

See who these companies are: http://www.247wallst.com/2008/01/the-large-us-co.html

Fliers will have to pay to check a second bag

United on Monday became the first major U.S. carrier to impose a $25 fee each way on domestic passengers
By Marilyn Adams
USA Today News

Millions of passengers who like to pack heavily on trips soon will have to pay extra to check a second bag on United Airlines (UAUA).

Citing the extraordinary cost of jet fuel, United on Monday became the first major U.S. carrier to impose a $25 fee each way on domestic passengers who buy the cheapest tickets and check two suitcases. Checking a third bag will cost an additional $100 each way.

Until now, checking two bags on flights has been free on United, the USA's No. 2 airline, and every other major carrier.

But luggage is heavy, and extra weight requires more fuel to transport. In the October-December quarter, fuel cost United $1.4 billion, 26% more than a year earlier. Fuel is airlines' largest expense, eclipsing wages.

"The passenger who checks two bags should pay the extra cost of carrying two bags," said Robin Urbanski, spokeswoman for the Chicago-based carrier.

The Earth Enters a New Epoch In History

Man's Impact On The Planet Brings About New Epoch In Earth's History
ScienceDaily

Geologists from the University of Portsmouth are proposing that humankind has so changed the earth that it has brought about an end to one epoch of earth’s history and marked the start of another. They believe that human dominance has so physically altered the earth that the Holocene epoch has ended and we have entered a new epoch - the Anthropocene.

Dr Andrew Gale of the University of Portsmouth and his colleagues on the Stratigraphy Commission of the Geological Society of London identified the major causes of human impact on the planet and discovered that the last 200 years had caused more impact then previously understood.

They examined phenomena such as changes in the patterns of sediment erosion and deposition, major disturbances to the carbon cycle and global temperature, ocean acidification and wholesale changes to the world’s plants and animals.

“Human activity has become the number one driver of most of the major changes in Earth's topography and climate, said Dr Gale. “You can’t have 6.5 billion people living on a planet the size of ours and exploiting every possible resource without creating huge changes in the physical, chemical and biological environment which will be reflected dramatically in our geological record of the planet.”

One Great Sandwich: Soul Vegetarian East's BBQ Twist

Soul Vegetarian East, a well-known spot serving up plates of soul food seen through vegan lenses
Chicagoist.com

Soul Veg's owners, African Hebrew Israelites, may maintain a vegan diet for religious reasons, but the food itself draws a wide range of diners to 75th street. Everyone from local businessmen to families; from U of C students to North Side vegans can be found at the simple tables and chairs in the modesty-decorated restaurant for cheap plates of favorites like collard greens, carrot supreme salad and veggie gyros.

But don't let the promise of "vegan" food fool you into thinking this is necessarily diet food: if the delicious chicken nugget-esque "protein tidbits" are any indication, you might need to loosen up your belt if you're a regular visitor. But for vegetarians and vegans looking for a good guilty pleasure nosh, we'll see you at Soul Veg.

That said, a recent sojourn to the south side neighborhood of Chatham might have made us a mock meat convert. Soul Vegetarian East, a well-known spot serving up plates of soul food seen through vegan lenses. Although we sampled a few of the restaurant's varied sandwich offerings, the waitress's recommendation of BBQ Twist ended up being the big winner. The mock meat at Soul Veg is unlike any we've sampled elsewhere--even in the huge, riblet-like chunks that are served up on a simple bun and topped with lettuce, the pieces maintained a surprisingly fibrous texture. BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches were popular in this writer's house growing up, but slathered in Soul Veg's sweet and mild BBQ sauce, this incarnation retains a chewy, juicy quality that we'd venture to guess could even convert our meat-loving parents.

Fingerprints are now being required for international travel

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today that it has begun collecting additional fingerprints from international visitors
Forbes.com

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today that it has begun collecting additional fingerprints from international visitors arriving at George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport (Bush Intercontinental). The change is part of the department's upgrade from two- to 10-fingerprint collection to enhance security and facilitate legitimate travel by more accurately and efficiently establishing and verifying visitors' identities.

"Biometrics have revolutionized our ability to prevent dangerous people from entering the United States since 2004. Our upgrade to 10-fingerprint collection builds on our success, enabling us to focus more attention on stopping potential security risks," US-VISIT Director Robert Mocny said.

For more than four years, U.S. Department of State (DOS) consular officers and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have been collecting biometrics -- digital fingerprints and a photograph -- from all non-U.S. citizens between the ages of 14 and 79, with some exceptions, when they apply for visas or arrive at U.S. ports of entry.

Bush Intercontinental is the next port of entry to begin collecting 10 fingerprints from international visitors. Washington Dulles International Airport began 10-fingerprint collection on November 29, 2007. Thus far, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, and Chicago O'Hare International Airport have also begun 10- fingerprint collection. Five other airports will soon begin collecting additional fingerprints, including: San Francisco International Airport, Miami International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Orlando International Airport, and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The remaining airports, seaports and land border ports of entry will transition to collecting 10 fingerprints by the end of 2008. Satellite is weeks away from hitting Earth

A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power & could hit the Earth in late February
CNN.COM

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday.

A senior government official says lawmakers and other nations are being kept apprised of the situation.

The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret.

"Appropriate government agencies are monitoring the situation," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. "Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause.

He would not comment on whether it is possible for the satellite to be perhaps shot down by a missile. He said it would be inappropriate to discuss any specifics at this time. A senior government official said that lawmakers and other nations are being kept apprised of the situation.

The largest uncontrolled re-entry by a NASA spacecraft was Skylab, the 78-ton abandoned space station that fell from orbit in 1979. Its debris dropped harmlessly into the Indian Ocean and across a remote section of western Australia.

In 2000, NASA engineers successfully directed a safe de-orbit of the 17-ton Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, using rockets aboard the satellite to bring it down in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.

In 2002, officials believe debris from a 7,000-pound science satellite smacked into the Earth's atmosphere and rained down over the Persian Gulf, a few thousand miles from where they first predicted it would plummet.

Ghana Health Ministry To Expand Regenerative Health Programme

The Ministry hopes to introduce it in 50 other districts this year
Source: GBC NEWS

The Ministry of Health, as part of its paradigm shift has introduced the Regenerative Health and Nutrition Programme which it has been successfully launched in 10 districts. The Ministry hopes to introduce it in 50 other districts this year. A statement issued by the Ministry said people from all walks of life including journalists have been sent to Dimona , Israel to understudy their concept and system.

It said beneficiaries of that trip assembled at the Manna Heights Hotel in Mankessim to review the concept and share their experiences and the way forward. After three-days of deliberation, participants came out with a communiqué which advocated the development of a national policy on cultivation of organically grown foods including vegetables and fruit and the production of regenerative health food and crops at reasonable cost.

It called for the introduction of health education and nutrition as examinable subjects in school curriculum and increasing access to potable water.

The Communiqué asked for a scale up in consultation with relevant stakeholders including establishing strategic partnerships with community radio stations, the programme of mass communication of the Regenerative health message at the national and district level including packaging the Regenerative message into local languages and the production of jingles as well as build capacity of change agents.

It noted that there is the need to explore options for setting up a National Commission on Regenerative Health and Nutrition and introduction of alternative and sustainable source of financing the programme.

The Communiqué suggested the empowerment of MPs, Chiefs and other opinion leaders to disseminate the Regenerative Health and Nutrition messages and lifestyles in collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission to promote the use of nutrition in the management of HIV and AIDS.

Regenerative Health and Nutrition Team from Dimona helps Cut Medical Costs in Ghana

Ghana Loses $762 Million Annually In Malaria Control
by Shirley Asiedu-Addo
Ghana General News

About $762 million is lost in controlling malaria in the country yearly. The loss includes labour loss, cost of transportation to facilities, cost to families and cost in treating patients.

According to the Minister of Health, Major Courage Quashigah (retd), if the cost of preventable and avoidable diseases continued to increase, it might be necessary to sell the country to pay for the ill-health of its people.Major Quashigah, who was addressing a meeting to review the new Regenerative Health and Nutrition Programme (RHNP) introduced to ensure good health by adopting healthy lifestyles, said, “It is important that the country work to ensure that limited resources are not wasted on preventable diseases.” Health service providers, district chief executives and media practitioners attended the meeting in Mankessim in the Central Region.

The RHNP was adopted from Dimona, Israel, where a community of about 3,500 African Hebrews live without encountering any diseases as a result of the programme. Major Quashigah stated that in the near future, all diseases would be costed to know their cost to the nation and the need to work to prevent them. He noted that since 2006, the RHNP had been piloted in 10 districts in seven regions of Ghana in the form of week-long training of change agents and advocates.

The minister stated that more than 700 change agents and 5,000 advocates had so far received training in RHNP across the country, adding that he expected them to work hard to touch the people in the communities and families to adopt the programme. He said it was unfortunate that eating junk food was associated with sophistication, adding that eating healthy foods, exercise and rest could do a lot of good to the body.

The Director of the programme, Dr Edward Addai, stated that RHNP had been found to be an important way of improving the lives of the people in any nation. He, therefore, urged all stakeholders to ensure that the programme was successful. The Omanhen of the Mankessim Traditional Area, Nana Amanfo Adu VI, urged the people to ensure the proper handling of fruits and vegetables to avoid contracting diseases. He also called on them to adopt personal hygiene and good environmental sanitation practices to ensure healthy living.

US To Launch New National ID

All Citizens Must Have "REAL ID" By 2009
PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, PRNewswire-USNewswire-- Under the final REAL ID regulations issued Friday by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), states will be required to verify Social Security numbers and immigration status before issuing driver's licenses beginning in October 2009. Residents of states that resist compliance with REAL ID could find their driver's license rendered useless for federal identification purposes as early as May 2008. These regulations represent an important breakthrough in the effort to enhance homeland security and the enforcement of laws against illegal immigration, says the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

After formal comments submitted by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), the legal affiliate of FAIR, final regulations now require verification of Social Security numbers and immigration status before a license may be issued and, unlike many of the other provisions of REAL ID, will be implemented by October 2009.

"Establishing that all people with state-issued driver's licenses or ID cards are legal residents of the United States is crucial to the effort to protect our nation's security and control mass immigration," commented Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "Preventing people who have no legal right to be in the country from obtaining these documents will make it more difficult to live and work here in violation of the law. This objective was the driving rationale behind the REAL ID Act."

Cough Medicine Could Harm Your Children

Cough Medicine Isn't for Kids
By Nancy Shute
US News & World Report

I confess: I drugged my kid. My intentions were good; she had a cough and needed to sleep. Surely a spoonful of cough medicine would be a mercy. My 4-year-old slurped up the grape-flavored syrup and trotted off to bed. Good mommy? Hardly.

I already knew that the cold medicines that crowd pharmacy shelves have never been properly tested to see if they're safe or effective for children. The reason those cheerful packages don't list dosages for children under age 2, but just say "ask a doctor," is that the Food and Drug Administration has never appproved a safe amount. F.D.A. Says Cloned Animals Safe to Eat

FDA declared that food from cloned animals and their progeny is safe
By Andrew Martin
New York Times

After years of debate, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday declared that food from cloned animals and their progeny is safe, removing the last government hurdle before meat and milk derived from copies of prize dairy cows and superior hogs can be sold at grocery stores.

The decision comes more than four years after the agency tentatively declared that food from cloned animals was safe, only to face a backlash from consumer groups and some scientists who said the science supporting the decision was shaky.
On Tuesday, the F.D.A. declared that further studies had confirmed its earlier decision. Extensive measurement of nutrients in the meat and milk of clones found no cause for alarm, the agency said.

“Following extensive review, the risk assessment did not identify any unique risks for human food from cattle, swine or goat clones, and concluded that there is sufficient information to determine that food from cattle, swine and goat clones is as safe to eat as that from their more conventionally bred counterparts," the agency said in a statement.

The F.D.A. ruling was a major victory for cloning companies, which hope to use the cloned animals primarily for breeding purposes, selling copies of prize dairy cows, steers and hogs. The company putting the most effort into developing the technology is ViaGen, of Austin, Texas. That company and others have already produced scores of clones that live on American farmsteads, though the F.D.A. has asked the farmers to honor a voluntary moratorium on the sale of clone meat and milk.

No law prohibits such sales, and the document the F.D.A. issued Tuesday is essentially an advisory opinion to industry saying the agency sees no ground to seek a permanent ban.

US scientists create beating heart in lab

The hope would be we could generate an organ that matched your body
Reuters News Service

CHICAGO - US researchers say they have coaxed hearts from dead rats to beat again in the laboratory and said the discovery may one day lead to customised organ transplants for people.

"The hope would be we could generate an organ that matched your body," said Doris Taylor of the University of Minnesota Centre for Cardiovascular Repair.

Her study, which appeared on Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine, offers a way to fulfill the promise of using stem cells - the body's master cells - to grow tailor-made organs for transplant. Taylor and colleagues used a process called decellularisation to wash away existing cells from the hearts of dead rats while leaving the basic collagen structure intact.

They injected this gelatin-like scaffold with heart cells from newborn rats, fed them a nutrient-rich solution and left them in the lab to grow.

Four days later, the hearts started to contract(beat).

SOUTHERN EDEN CELEBRATES 1ST ANNUAL NATIONAL GATHERING

“FROM INVISIBLE TO VISIBLE”
By Ahk Simkhiel Ben Yisrael
KNN-Southern Eden/S. Africa

On the 15th to 16th of December 2007, the Southern Eden family gathered together for the first time under one roof. The event took place at Ipelegeng Community Center in Soweto Johannesburg. This historical occasion marked a significant turn in direction for the Southern Eden extension. The objectives of the gathering were as follows:

-To glorify Yah, celebrate, and showcase our talents

-Reflect on the 40-year history of the kingdom of Yah and to inspire a forward movement together planning for the future.

-To bring the family together/getting to know each other.

-Discussing strategic issues relating to the building of the family.

-Graduation of absorbed students.

Our program started on Yom Sheshee with the arrival of the various extensions, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Kuruman and the host extension Johannesburg, we then gathered together to honor the opening of the Shabbat. Dinner was then served after which the saints erupted into song and dance to mark the opening of what would be a very grand event.

Day Two of Program

On day two our program took us to the streets of Soweto (as in picture above) were we had our very first Culture Pride Parade, on our way to Thokoza Park for a Morning Prayer. During the walk we made an everlasting impression on the minds of our people. Their comments were encouraging as we look forward in the future to connect with more of our people. After we had made supplication and sang songs of praise unto Yah and the Father we moved on to our next item, which was a tour of Soweto. On the tour we visited the Oliver Tambo square in Kliptown were the freedom charter of 1955 was first written, then we moved on to the Hector Peterson Museum in Orlando West which depicts the 1976 Soweto Uprising as well as other significant events of our people’s Liberation struggle.

Evening Meal and Elevation Ceremony

Following the tour of Soweto we headed back to the venue, were water and juices were served, and the saints took a break to rest. After the break the main event of the gathering took place, which was the conference: “From invisible to visible”. We had two speakers from the Johannesburg Extension who highlighted the task that is before us. The first speaker was Ahk Mikaiyael Ben Shaul Ha Cohane who bought to us a State of the Nation address, entitled “South Africa: From anti-Apartheid to Anti-Yah”. Ahk Malchiel Ben Israel presented the keynote address, entitled “The Faithful and True shall break into Pieces the Euro-American Civilization.”
After this we were ready to close the Shabbat.

We then gathered again together for the evening meal and elevation ceremony in which over 50 saints from all the extensions received Hebrew names. As part of the Elevation ceremony Ahk Naganiel Ben Israel presented a brief history of the Southern Eden Extension. The Elevation ceremony ended the day’s events.

Day three of the Gathering

It was on to Day three of the gathering, which began, with a morning prayer after which followed breakfast. When breakfast was served saints were settled into to different auditoriums as separate Brotherhood and Sisterhood meetings commenced simultaneously.

At the close of the meetings a break was then taken so as to prepare for the concert, which would follow. The performances were a holy, energetic and inspirational. Personally I have never ever in my entire life enjoyed myself more as I did on that extraordinary day.

During the concert we also had the “African/Edenic Heritage Museum” on display for viewing by members of the community as well as our guests.

Later on in the evening before Dinner was served we had a National meeting, to close the meeting Ahk Rechav’am Ben Israel then read into our hearing a message to the nation from the Holy Father Ben Ammi Hamasheahk.

After Dinner the events of the day and the gathering were officially closed. Nevertheless the saints went into song and dancing and we stayed up well into the night.

On Yom Sheinee breakfast was served at 10 am. Representatives of each extension made farewell speeches and then the saints sang and embraced one another. This marked the close of the National Gathering.

We pray that Yah Yahwah help us to maintain the momentum received and also to strengthen the bonds established at this incredibly festive and sacred union.
Yah Yisrael Khai!!!

Does milk really do a body good?

A nutritionist investigates the claims about the beverage
By Alan Aragon, M.S.
Mens Health Magazine

“Milk is a deadly poison," according to the Dairy Education Board. In fact, if you peruse this special interest group's Web site, notmilk.com, you'll find dozens of articles about the purported evils of this popular beverage. One claim, for example, is that milk from cows contains cancer-causing hormones and dairy industry dollars have kept that fact bottled up. All of which may leave you second-guessing your next sip.

FAA Institutes New Bans on Laptop and Gadget Batteries on Planes

For the year 2008 a new FAA-wide battery ban has gone into effect
by Tim Stevens
AOL News

In the wake of exploding batteries in some laptops, airlines are taking measures to ban the use of those laptops in flight. For the year 2008 a new FAA-wide battery ban has gone into effect, and this one potentially applies to all of your gadgets -- not just your laptop.

The ban doesn't focus on a specific manufacturer or model. The new rules dictate how much lithium you are allowed to carry on a flight, and how you are permitted to do so. Lithium is of course a key component of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, and with these new rules you are allowed to carry on and check a maximum of 25 grams of lithium.

How do you figure out just how much you have in all your gadgets? Well, there are some guidelines and examples at Safetravel.dot.gov that can help you get a good estimate, but unless you always take three or four spare batteries for your laptop along with you, chances are you have nothing to worry about.

However, it's important to note that spare batteries cannot be stored in checked baggage. So, while you can still take a second or maybe even a third laptop or cell phone battery with you, you have to keep it in your carry-on baggage, or risk it not being there when you get to your destination!

KNN Exclusive "Profiles in Courage" - Ahkote Odehyah Baht Israel

The Story of a Literary Giant
By
Eitai B.N. Aharon
KNN Sr. Editor

A late product of the baby-boom generation Odehyah Baht Israel was born on September 5th in Washington DC. Reared in a working class neighborhood, Odehyah graduated from DC’s public school system in 1969.

Shortly after graduation, the hopeful student set her sights on the Atlantic coast and enrolled in prestigious Douglass College in New Jersey, a part of the Rutgers University system. She majored in Anthropology and African Studies and was a student of world famous Rutgers University professor Ivan Van Sertima. Van Sertima, a distinguished member of the Department of African Studies at Rutgers, was the editor of The Journal of African Civilization but is probably more widely recognized as the author of the ground-breaking book, They Came before Columbus: the African Presence in Ancient America. This seemingly inconsequential encounter with the illustrious professor and writer would profoundly influence and somehow, forecast the direction of Odehyah’s evolving career path.

In 1973, Odehyah was interviewed by a recruiter from Doubleday Book Publishing. The woman was so impressed with the bright young applicant that she immediately offered Odehyah an internship with the historic publisher. Doubleday is home to many of the world’s most distinguished editors and writers. Foremost among these world-renowned figures is 1907 Nobel Prize recipient Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is listed among Doubleday’s most notable editors. A brief but fascinating summer internship turned into a permanent position with this legendary book publisher.

During a two-year stint at Doubleday, Odehyah quickly advanced through the ranks, eventually settling in as Assistant Manager of the company’s Publicity Department.

It was in this capacity that, in 1976 a seemingly innocuous first acquaintance with yet another celebrated author would significantly impact and work to set the course of her young life.
It was in August of 1976 that Doubleday published the autobiographical novel Roots: the Saga of an American Family by Alex Haley. Haley was visiting the Doubleday facility to organize his upcoming national publicity tour when he momentarily stopped to chat with the rookie assistant manager at her desk.

Odehyah recalls,

“During my brief encounter with Alex Haley, I jokingly suggested that I should accompany him on his upcoming publicity tour. What I didn’t know was that although I was joking – Alex Haley was not!!”

Inspired by his brief encounter with the eloquent young manager, Haley at once met with Odehyah’s superiors and immediately signed her up for a whirlwind multi-city publicity tour to promote Roots!!

Odehyah remembers that the tour experience was nearly beyond description!! Most African Americans can give personal testimony of the awesome impact that the autobiographical Roots saga had on their lives at that time. The dramatic tale touched a core deep within the African American soul. The primetime television mini-series quickly followed the distribution of the novel, marking the first time that African American history was rendered from Africa to captivity and slavery in America. The Roots phenomenon to some degree served to aid African Americans in their struggle to reconnect with and reclaim their much expurgated history. Ahkote Odehyah played a small but notable role in that great event.

In 1976 Odehyah left Doubleday and headed west for California sunshine. She worked briefly in the television industry as a writer’s assistant for TOY Productions, a small production company in Los Angeles headed by several prominent television producers, Saul Turteltaub, Bernie Orenstein and Bud Yorkin. TOY produced the popular but short-lived 70’s TV sitcom What’s Happening as well as the long-running hit series Sanford and Son starring the legendary comedian Redd Foxx.

Odehyah had always demonstrated an instinctive flair and aptitude in writing and editing. In 1977 her extensive work at Doubleday and TOY would prove to be worthwhile when she was hired by Essence Magazine as the publication’s West Coast Editor.

At this point, it is hard to imagine that things could get much more interesting for this DC native. Her improbable journey had taken her from her unpretentious east coast beginnings all the way to Los Angeles, California. However, the very next year things would indeed get far more interesting for Ahkote Odehyah,

“In the fall of 1978, I got a call from Motown exec Iris Gordy. Iris was aware of the African Hebrew Israelite community and thought it would make an intriguing article for Essence. She invited me to her office and that’s where I first met Prince Asiel, Nasik Elkanon, Sar Eliyahoo and Ahtur Ahkiezer. The rest is Kingdom history.”

Unfortunately, Essence decided not to run the article on the African Hebrews, but Odehyah maintained contact with her royal acquaintances. In the fall of 1980 she was invited to the Holy Jerusalem Writers Conference in Israel. Although she couldn’t make it in time for that great event, Odehyah eagerly accepted the invitation to visit Israel and booked a flight to the land of her ancestors.

On the long flight to the Holy Land Odehyah certainly must have wondered exactly how she had arrived at this particular moment in her life. Absent the element of divine predestination, it is impossible to comprehend how an Anthropology major from a residential college had somehow landed on a career path that would eventually lead to a senior position with one of the nation’s premier publications. And then here she is going to a place where the vast majority of Africans in America and the world – would never dream of visiting. Nevertheless, it would be in Israel that the apparently incongruous events of Odehyah’s extraordinary life adventure would finally be resolved. For it was on this trip that Odehyah would meet Ben Ammi and Nasik Shaleak, for the first time.

“The sacred visitation led by Nasik Shaleak was life altering for me. It was on this trip that the historical pieces of the puzzle were put together. Nasik Shaleak showed me how Alex Haley’s Roots was only part of Black people’s story, going beyond the shores of West Africa and including not just a connection to Africa but an ancestral link to the Holy Land and the Almighty Father. Nasik taught that as His chosen people, our mission was more than just living mundane, 9 to 5 lives but understanding our special charge as God’s chosen.”

In the sitting with Ben Ammi, Odehyah’s realization of why the community of Hebrews had come to leave America and settle in Israel became even clearer. These two encounters would set into motion a course of events that would have a profound impact on the expansion and development of the Kingdom.

Upon meeting Odehyah, the Holy Father was struck by the young woman’s impressive résumé – especially as it related to her experience in the field of publishing. Abba had recently given a dissertation entitled “The Power to Define” which he planned to have published. He believed that Odehyah could ply her professional dexterity to help accomplish that task. Sometime later Odehyah would accept the challenge of editing the document. That seminal manuscript ultimately evolved into a much larger and more ambitious literary undertaking entitled “God the Black Man and Truth” published in 1982!!

Having relocated to Israel soon after her initial introduction to the Kingdom, Ahkote Odehyah not only assumed the laborious task of editing the entire book but wrote the Foreword and the Introduction as well. Odehyah’s work on “The Power to Define” document was only the first chapter in the editing of the entire book “God the Black Man and Truth” that commenced a very close and enduring collaboration between herself and the Holy Father. Odehyah would eventually serve as the line editor for all nine books in the phenomenal and earth-shaking Resurrection Series!!

“Working so closely with Abba Rahbee over the years – from 1981 to 2006 -- helping to carve his inspired writings into the profound, life-changing teachings they are, has been one of the greatest and most rewarding experiences anyone could ever want. And to have the opportunity for my name and my writings to appear with his means I am indelibly linked to this great teacher and leader.”

In the early eighties Odehyah joined forces with Nasiyk Gavriel Ha-Gadol and the two began the preliminary work on a manuscript that would ultimately become the biographical work on the community “The Impregnable People”. This extensive process would span nearly a decade. Work on this book continued on even through one of the Nation’s most intense and harrowing periods of the 90’s – The Gulf War (January 1990). During this extremely problematic period Odehyah was also assisting the Father with work on two foundational books, “God and the Law of Relativity” and “Messiah and the End of this World”!! She continued to support the development of each of these complex literary masterpieces even as Scud missiles flew overhead!!

Odehyah explains,

“This was a very stressful time for all the Saints! On numerous occasions we would be told to pull on a gas mask, secure the windows and doors with heavy plastic and tape to protect us from Saddam Hussein’s Scud missile attacks.”

However, she laughingly adds,

“All the while the Father would ask me, ‘Odehyah, are you done with that assignment yet?? War or no war, Abba Rahbee expected me to continue editing his writings during this time. Even in a crisis such as this, getting the message of the Holy Father out was crucial. It helped me to realize how vital these writings were to saving Yah’s people.”

Thankfully those nerve gas attacks were never successfully effectuated and her work for Abba as well as work on “The Impregnable People” proceeded unabated. At long last the book was completed in 1992. Now the single remaining step of this extended literary process was to get the book published. So in 1992 Odehyah returned to the states to visit her parents and submit the “The Impregnable People” manuscript for publication. It was on this trip that the idea came to her to turn the Impregnable People saga into a movie.

Years earlier the historic Roots saga vividly chronicled the plight of Africans from their African homeland to captivity and enslavement in the Americas. Correspondingly, The Impregnable People historical narrative records the details of the African Hebrew Israelites valiant return home. The Roots television mini-series followed closely on the heels of the publication and distribution of the book making television history and successfully raising the consciousness of an entire generation. The tale of The Impregnable People represents a powerful next step in the restoration of the identity of a people. It was the awesome hand of the Almighty that placed Odehyah Baht Israel at the epicenter of these historic literary and cultural phenomena.

Now she would begin the arduous process of turning the book into a movie. As He had done so often in times past, Yah would powerfully guide Odehyah in the direction of her divine destiny. In 1994 Odehyah settled in New York City and for the next three years she worked for Home Box Office (HBO), and was blessed to have her NYU courses in film production and screen writing paid for by HBO. Sometime later Odehyah started to develop the script for the embryonic Impregnable People movie project.

Today, The Impregnable People movie has been brought to the finishing stages of its development. With a hefty assist from accomplished film director Ahkote Roneyah, the movie script has been polished and is currently being shopped for production.

“It is a powerful story that must be shared with the world. With Yah Almighty’s blessings, we will raise the money to produce it or find a producer who understands the magnitude and power of this awesome story,” she says.

This ambitious and culturally significant motion picture venture will stand as the crowning achievement in a life marked by uncompromised commitment and extraordinary valor. The exceptional life of Ahkote Odehyah Baht Israel is truly a Profile in Courage.
