Healthy Diets, Not Standard-American Diet Prevent Disease

Dr. Baruch

Many Americans assume that the United States is the world's healthiest nation. Unfortunately, statistics show that we are not as healthy as we may think. We do enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world, with extraordinary emergency medical technology and trauma care. The average American has first-class access to emergency health care, but this fact doesn't make us healthy. When we evaluate our national lifestyle as one of healthy living we get a different picture.

Poor Health At Best, Disaster At Worst!

The Standard-American diet typically might include a doughnut or muffin with coffee and orange juice for breakfast followed by a mid-morning bagel with cream cheese. Lunch would likely be a turkey sandwich with some chips and a soft drink-or a hefty fast-food burger with extra cheese, a large order of french fries, and a "super-sized" soft drink. The afternoon hours would feature an "energy-boosting" candy bar from a vending machine with another softdrink. Dinner promises a meat-and-potatoes entree with a roll and margarine, some green beans for the health-conscious, and some ice cream for desert. This diet amounts to a prescription for poor health at best and disaster at worst. Virtually any departure from this diet will make you feel better. There is very good reason that the Standard-American-Diet is referred to by its acronym-SAD!

Ancestors Healthy Diet

Just one hundred years ago or less, the Standard-American Diet was dramatically different from what we eat today. Widespread corporate"mono-agriculture" with concentration on single crop specialties and chemical fertilizers and pesticides was unheard of then. The typical Standard-American-Diet consisted mostly of fruits, vegetables, wild grain and seeds, fish, raw unpasteurized dairy products, and meat from wild animals. Our ancestors consumed 30 to 65 percent of their daily calories (and up to 100 grams of fiber a day) from a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. That is why, long before the discovery of vitamins, people who had access to healthy foods lived extremely long lives without vitamin deficiencies or major illnesses. This diet protected our ancestors against diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Laws of Diet-Nutrition

Many who violate the laws of diet-nutrition are ignorant of the relation of the laws of living (eating, drinking, and working) to their health. If then we would resort to simple means, and follow the simple laws of health that we have been neglecting-proper diet, use of pure water, fresh air, sunshine, rest, and nature's remedies, herbs, etc., nature would restore the body to its original health. The Standard-AmericanDiet would be sad no more.

If we cared about living healthy lives, instead we would choose healthy eating plans, like those espoused by Dr. Baruch.

Louis Farrakhan addresses tens of thousands at Saviours' Day in Detroit

Speech billed as his last major public address
by Rachel Martin -NPR News

In a speech billed as his last major public address, Minister Louis Farrakhan, ailing leader of the Nation of Islam, lambasted the Bush administration's foreign policy.

Farrakhan was speaking Sunday night to tens of thousands of Nation of Islam members in Detroit, where the movement began.

Farrakhan recently underwent surgery for complications from prostate cancer. And even though many within the Nation were hesitant to call this a good-bye speech, Farrakhan himself, his voice quivering, said it was just that.

"My time is up. The final call can't last forever."

That's a difficult message for some loyal followers to hear. Minister Jeffrey Muhammad has been a member of the Nation for 17 years and works in the group's Chicago offices. For him, and many people at the speech, Farrakhan represents much more than a spiritual leader.

Virginia Lawmakers Pass Slavery Apology

The resolution was introduced as Virginia begins its celebration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown
By LARRY O'DELL - AP

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 24) - Meeting on the grounds of the former Confederate Capitol, the Virginia General Assembly voted unanimously Saturday to express "profound regret" for the state's role in slavery.

Sponsors of the resolution say they know of no other state that has apologized for slavery, although Missouri lawmakers are considering such a measure. The resolution does not carry the weight of law but sends an important symbolic message, supporters said.

The measure also expressed regret for "the exploitation of Native Americans."

The resolution was introduced as Virginia begins its celebration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, where the first Africans arrived in 1619. Richmond, home to a popular boulevard lined with statues of Confederate heroes, later became another point of arrival for Africans and a slave-trade hub. See: See What Lawmakers Regret

Cloned beef burgers on the menu

A Pennsylvania company may be serving a taste of the future at regular Friday lunches featuring meat from cloned cows.
By BusinessWeek-MSN Money

Shirley Trimmer knows her hamburgers. She prepares them with a handful of bread cubes, a little egg, chopped onions and just the right sprinkling of salt and pepper. Trimmer recently served burgers for a lunch meeting of the seven-member team that makes up the biotech company Cyagra, based in Elizabethtown, Pa.

But something was different about these hamburgers: They were made from the meat of cloned cows. Every Friday for the past year or so, Cyagra employees have been eating their way through the thousands of pounds of beef left over from the 11 clones that the company had raised and slaughtered for a cloned-meat study.

"We started with the steaks, which we grilled all summer long, and now we have hamburger meat left over," Trimmer says. Steve Mower, the company's director of marketing, says, "She cooks (the burgers) just right. They're delicious."

Like it or not, Trimmer and her colleagues may be getting a taste of the future. On Dec. 28, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an 800-page report that concluded meat and milk from clones are safe for consumption. The FDA has asked for public comment on the issue over the next couple of months, but it appears likely to give final approval for food from cloned animals.

"It's not a big deal," Mower says. "I've eaten cloned beef for a year and a half. It's scientifically proven to be safe." See: Cloned-beef burgers may head onto the menu

Health For All - The Dimona Community

A Reality Or A Mirage?
By Dr George Amofah
Director Public Health, Ghana Health Service

Imagine a community of about 3500 people composed of women, men and children of various age groups. Imagine that for almost 40 long years no one in the community has died of any natural medical condition inspite of the fact that women are giving birth five or more times in their lifespan. And not only that, sickness of any type (including the myriad of non-communicable diseases) is so unusual that it becomes a major surprise when it occurs rather than an expectation.

Yes, you will not be wrong to imagine that you are in a dreamland or probably in heaven! But the fact of the matter is that the scenario depicted above is a reality happening right before our eyes in a community of African Hebrews Israelites in the village of DIMONA in the southern part of Israel. This community does not only believe that it is possible to be healthy, but actually they are living what they believe and reaping the benefits thereof. Against the backdrop that in this modern world where sickness is not only expected but, as someone rightly said, “we have all been programmed to accept sickness as inevitable and eagerly and helplessly awaited for!” what is happening there is almost miraculous.

Health for All
Come to think of it, the fact that people believe that it is possible to be healthy is not really strange because that is what the international community has since 1977 proclaimed in the famous vision of “Health for All by year 2000”. In 1977, health was defined as “a State of Physical, Social and Mental WELL BEING, and not merely the absence of disease nor infirmity”. In 1978 the international community, at the Alma Ata conference, formulated the Primary Health Care (PHC) concept to guide all of us to achieve this vision of Health for All.

Since then, and even before that in Ghana, the principles and concepts envisioned in PHC have guided public health practice in Ghana and elsewhere although with minimal degree of success. Twenty eight years after, we are still saddled with all types of diseases (though major progress has been made in various preventable childhood diseases). Under 5 Mortality, Infant Mortality and Maternal Mortality rates are still very high in developing countries, sanitation - related diseases are on the increase and, unfortunately, non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancers are on the rise.

A closer look at what is contributing to the success story in DIMONA reveals that largely it is the same guiding principles envisaged under PHC that are shaping their lives, in addition to Biblical principles as enshrined in the first five books of the Old Testament. The difference largely is that they not only believe in those principles but are actually living them and setting up systems to support their lifestyles and beliefs. The difference is there for all to see.

PHC Principles and Concepts
What were the PHC principles and concepts? The key ones, among others, are:
1. Focus on promotion of health and prevention of diseases
2. Community participation
3. Inter-sectoral collaboration
4. Equity
5. Appropriate technology and self-reliance

Promotion of health encompasses all interventions and actions designed to make people healthy and stay healthy. These may include proper dietary practices, exercises, mental harmony and adequate rest and recreation. Prevention of diseases includes immunization, good environmental practices and personal hygiene, and avoidance of tobacco and alcohol. Community Participation envisages a group of people in a defined area with a common vision, each being the others keeper and all working together to achieve the shared vision.

Inter-sectoral collaboration recognizes that individuals and institutions have their own individual and corporate strengths and advantages and no single individual or institution has all the knowledge, skills and resources to achieve the common goal or vision. There is therefore the need for inter-dependence and due recognition of the contribution of all, no matter how small it may appear. Appropriate technology is based on the fact that simple things can work and one does not have to wait for complex technologies in order to succeed. More often than not what is workable locally may be sufficient for the task ahead if only the necessary information and skills are provided as part of capacity building. Equity is based on justice, fair play, solidarity, and respect for human rights.

The Dimona Community
The DIMONA community has literally established systems to actualize these principles and they are practically attempting to live them and the results are almost miraculous. After closely observing that community, as far as I can deduce, their success stems from the fact that from the womb through nursery, adolescence and adulthood, everyone in the community has the shared vision of healthy living. Messages are deliberately designed all the time to positively affirm the vision that it is possible to be healthy and stay healthy. In addition, as someone once said, “we are what we eat” and the community takes very seriously what they eat, how and when to eat and drink. Through its regenerative nutrition programme the community encourages eating mostly plant-based diet with no artificial additives, with plenty of vegetables, fruits and water. They also believe in elimination of waste through various measures including regular colonic cleansing with pure water.

Through its healthy lifestyle programme, individuals are encouraged to exercise and rest regularly, positively affirm and encourage each other and minimize all forms of stress, especially stress with respect to inter-personal relationship. They focus a lot on clean environment and personal hygiene and inculcate these values in their children right from birth. The community’s support systems are designed to facilitate the actualization in their lives of the principles of PHC of equity, community participation and inter-sectoral collaboration. Every person who is employed (by the community or outside) contributes a proportion of his/her income (depending on the means) into a common fund for a social welfare scheme. Everyone has to find a defined period to offer free service to the community in the spirit of solidarity.

I can go on and on. One need not accept all what they believe or practice (and certainly I do not accept all their religious beliefs, interpretations and practices) but certainly any unbiased student of public health will recognize that something very interesting and positive is happening in that community. The people are very healthy and enjoy living it - something that has eluded most people especially in the developing world. Not surprisingly, their basket ball team made up of 50 year olds and above won the 2006 national basketball tournament championship in Israel and the team, I am told, is to represent Israel in the European championship in 2007!

We have a lot to learn from the DIMONA community. There are social, cultural and religious differences which cannot be wished away. These differences should guide us in modifying what they practice to suit our environment. As the Honourable Minister of Health keeps on saying there is the need for a paradigm shift - a shift back to the basis of life, the positive things in how our fore fathers lived and ate and actualizing the guiding principles of PHC. This paradigm forms the basis of the new health policy and a Regenerative Health and Nutrition project about to be launched and implemented countrywide.

There is obviously a need for a paradigm shift to promotion of holistic health, healthy lifestyles, salubrious environment and shared vision of health for all. The alternative, unfortunately, is worsening mortality and morbidity statistics and a saddling with increasing prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, cancers, and dependence on drugs!

Health for All is a reality not a dream or a mirage. The international community in 1977 believed it was possible to achieve it by 2000. The DIMONA community has demonstrated that it is not only possible but a reality. They have shown us the way to be healthy and stay healthy. Let us live to be healthy and be healthy to live.

Yah Khai!!!

Moving away from cash - is the dollar bill dead?

New $1 coin the first to feature a president - Will dollar with Washington's image find more success than other versions?
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - George Washington’s birthday celebration will have a golden tinge this year. Millions of new gold-colored dollar coins bearing the first president’s likeness are being introduced in time for the festivities. The question is whether people will reject them as they did the two previous $1 coins.

The new $1 coins, the first in a series featuring four presidents a year, were to go into circulation on Thursday, just before next week’s President’s Day celebrations. So far the Federal Reserve, the Mint’s distribution agent, has placed orders for 300 million of the Washington coins. Many have already been delivered to commercial banks under orders not to begin selling them to customers until Thursday. “For the vast majority of Americans, they will be able to get the new dollar coin on the day that we issue it,” Mint Director Edmund C. Moy said in an interview with The Associated Press.

“I don’t know of any country that has successfully introduced the equivalent of a dollar coin without getting rid of the corresponding paper unit,” said Douglas Mudd, the author of a new book on the history of money, “All the Money in the World.” “If the new one-dollar coins are going to win, then one-dollar bills will have to lose,” said Jeff C. Garrett, president of the Professional Numismatists Guild. See: See the brand-new $1 coin

Catholic Church supports - After So Many Deaths, Too Many Births in Rwanda

Rwanda moves to limit family size - Rwanda is planning to limit couples to no more than three children because of rising poverty in Africa's most densely populated country.
BBC News Service

The country has one of the world's highest birth rates. Some are keen to have children to replace the family members lost during the 1994 genocide.
The government is holding discussions with church leaders - hoping to win their support for population control.

Catholic church leaders are not expected to oppose the plan, the Times reports. According to the Times, the church has avoided politics because some priests, nuns and lay workers took part in the 1994 genocide, which weakened the church's "moral authority." Officials designing the population control program say they would like their plan to become a model for other African countries.

They also say they have begun consulting specialists from the U.S. and other countries to fund the project in its entirety. The U.S. government is currently helping to finance the program, the Times reports (Kinzer, New York Times, 2/11).

Cleveland Cavs beat Lakers

Cavs rely on balance, not LeBron, vs. Lakers
Associated Press

CLEVELAND - LeBron James finally doesn’t have to do it all — all the time — for the Cavaliers.

James deferred to less-heralded teammate Sasha Pavlovic, who scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, and Cleveland clamped down on Kobe Bryant when it mattered most in a 99-90 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

James had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists, but he bowed to Pavlovic and others down the stretch, and Cleveland’s supporting cast came through.

“I feel like a prophet,” said James, who has been praising Pavlovic for weeks. “People were looking at me crazy. I’ve always said that if Sasha gets the opportunity, he is going to be very good. We go against each other in practice and I know what type of player he is. “He’s showing it.”

Texas governor orders STD vaccine for all girls

Decision comes after maker of cervical cancer shot doubled lobbying efforts
Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas - Bypassing the Legislature altogether, Republican Gov. Rick Perry issued an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.

By employing an executive order, Perry sidestepped opposition in the Legislature from conservatives and parents’ rights groups who fear such a requirement would condone premarital sex and interfere with the way Texans raise their children.

Beginning in September 2008, girls entering the sixth grade — meaning, generally, girls ages 11 and 12 — will have to receive Gardasil, Merck & Co.’s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV.

Perry also directed state health authorities to make the vaccine available free to girls 9 to 18 who are uninsured or whose insurance does not cover vaccines. In addition, he ordered that Medicaid offer Gardasil to women ages 19 to 21. See: Texas orders STD vaccine for all girls

Study: More kids exposed to online porn

42 percent of Internet users ages 10 to 14 have viewed sexual images
Associated Press

CHICAGO - More children and teens are being exposed to online pornography, mostly by accidentally viewing sexually explicit Web sites while surfing the Internet, researchers say.

Forty-two percent of Internet users aged 10 to 17 surveyed said they had seen online pornography in the past year. Of those, 66 percent said they did not want to view the images and had not sought them out, University of New Hampshire researchers found. Their conclusions appear in February’s Pediatrics, due out Monday.

“It’s beyond the wild West out there. You’ve really taken away the age of innocence,” said Dr. Michael Wasserman, a pediatrician with the Ochsner Clinic in Metairie, La., who was not involved in the study. In the survey, most kids who reported unwanted exposure were aged 13 to 17. Still, sizable numbers of 10- and 11-year-olds also had unwanted exposure — 17 percent of boys and 16 percent of girls that age. More than one-third of 16- and 17-year-old boys surveyed said they had intentionally visited X-rated sites in the past year.

Online use that put kids at the highest risk for unwanted exposure to pornography was using file-sharing programs to download images. However, they also stumbled onto X-rated images through other “normal” Internet use, the researchers said, including talking online with friends, visiting chat rooms and playing games. Subzero temperatures grip Upper Midwest

Schools close, some trains halted as mercury crashes to 42 below

MINNEAPOLIS - A bone-chilling arctic cold wave with temperatures as low as 42 below zero shut down schools for thousands of youngsters Monday, halted some Amtrak service and put car batteries on the disabled list from the northern Plains across the Great Lakes.

The cold was accompanied by snow that was measured in feet in parts of upstate New York. “Anybody in their right mind wouldn’t want to be out in weather like this,” Lawrence Wiley, 57, said at the Drop Inn Center homeless shelter where he has been living in Cincinnati. Monday lows in the area were in the single digits. See: Subzero temps grip Upper Midwest

Chicago Mission dedicated to teaching it's youth

Two Dimensions teaches righteous values to it's students
KNN-Chicago

This past week the KNN staff had the pleasure to interview Akote Tsitriyah of Chicago's Two Dimensions School. The interview went as follows:

KNN-WHEN DID THE SCHOOL IN CHICAGO START?

A Tsitriyah-Two Dimensions Home School is a vision of Sar Aytahniel. The school began on September 11th, 2006. A new beginning for our KOY youth, on a day that is remembered for the pain and suffering of those families who lost loved ones on 9/11.

KNN-HOW MANY STUDENTS DO YOU HAVE?

A. Tsitriyah-We presently have 16 students. Four, PreK students taught by Morah Ahniyah. One, Kindergarten student taught by Morah Yahfah. Three, 1st grade students taught by Moreh Yosheyahu. Four, 4th grade students, one, 5th grade student and three, 7th grade students taught by myself, Morah Tsitriyah.

KNN-WHAT IS THEIR TYPICAL DAY/WEEK LIKE?

A. Tsitriyah-Our day begins, Raising the Ark, the Nation Song and with the Prayer of Dedication and Blessing. My 4th grade students learn Math daily from Moreh Ammihud and the 7th grade students learn math from his Isha Morah Baht Aylah. Music on Shle-She by Moreh Daveed and African/Hebrew-Israelite History on She-Shee by Dr. AviMalech. The yellodim will resume swimming once a week at the neighborhood community center. Hebrew has been taught by Morah Tyryeyah and Moreh Yohanathan. While I, teach my students Language Arts, Spelling, Reading, Social Studies, Science and Art.

Nutritional, divine lunches are prepared on the premises by the Two Dimensions Ehmote. After lunch students and Moreh Yosheyahu engage in outdoor recreation (weather permitting), or classroom trivia based on the subjects taught or board games.

KNN-WHAT HAS BEEN THE BENEFIT OF TEACHING OUR OWN CHILDREN?

A. Tsitriyah-The benefit of teaching our children is that it allows us to focus on each childs' individual needs. Most of our yellodim need to heal before we can teach them. Teaching Kingdom of Yah students allows us to teach truth. Our students learn that fruits, herbs and vegetables where ordered to nourish us by Yah in Genesis 1:29.

When I accepted the offer to start the homeschool I thought it would be easier because I would be dealing with Kingdom Yellodim. Although this is a rewarding experience to dedicate ourselves to the education of Kingdom Yellodim, it is impossible to succeed without total parental support and involvement. Our school, Two Dimensions is appearing to be a catalyst for the healing process through positive parental interaction.

KNN-WHAT HAS THIS EXPERIENCE DONE FOR YOU?

A. Tsitriyah-This KOY teaching experience has helped to heal me from my 15 year, New York public school teaching experience. Prior to leaving the NY Board of ED in 2004, I told the Shagrere that I never wanted to teach again! And here I am, teaching at TWO DIMENSIONS HOME SCHOOL...PRAISE YAH !

Breast feeding debate continues

Food or lewd? Breast-feeding reveals divide. Why we get so worked up about how women feed their babies
By Debbie Cafazzo
MSNBC contributor

Julie Wheelan was confronted by a Rhode Island shopping mall security guard. A restaurant assistant manager in Las Vegas criticized Emilee Holt. And a lifeguard at a public pool in Washington state ordered Laurie Waldherr away from the water. Their offense? Breast-feeding in public. It seems that no matter how many protests breast-feeding moms stage in support of their rights, there’s always another confrontation right around the corner.

Even though health authorities have said for decades that breast is best for baby, American attitudes about nursing are still heatedly divided....The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be exclusively breast-fed (with no added water, juice or other foods) for the first six months of life. It supports breast-feeding for the first year and beyond as long as mother and child are willing. But in 2005, only 21 states achieved the national Healthy People goal for 75 percent of mothers to begin breast-feeding at birth, according to CDC data. See complete article: Mother of a debate

The Keys to Wellness, Wealth and Longevity

Organic Fruits, Nuts andVegetables
By Dr. Baruch

In addition to the mental and emotional benefits of growing and eating organic food, there are also the physical benefits. These physical benefits can be boiled down to nutrients present in organic foods that are not in commercial foods and toxins not in organic foods that are present in commercial foods. An article in the Journal of Applied Nutrition gave credence to the notion that organic foods have higher nutrient levels that non-organic food. In this study the mineral content of organic apples, pears, potatoes, wheat, and sweet corn were compared to commercial varieties. Overall the organic foods showed much higher levels of nutrient minerals and much lower levels of heavy metals.

Here are a few of the nutrients that were found in higher levels in the organic foods:

* Chromium is a micronutrient that is low in Western diets. Its deficiency is associated with the onset of adult diabetes and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Chromium was found to behigher in organic foods by an average of 78%.

* Selenium is one of the antioxidant nutrients that protects us from damage by environmental chemicals. It is protective against cancers and heart disease. It was found to be an average of 390% higher in organic foods.

* Calcium, needed for strong bones, averaged 63% higher in organics.

* Boron, which has been shown to help prevent osteoporosis (along with calcium), averaged 70% more.

* Lithium, which is used to treat certain types of depression, was 188% higher.

* Magnesium, which reduces mortality from heart attacks, keeps muscles from spasming, and eases the symptoms of PMS, averaged 138% more.

In short, many of the minerals that we most often are deficient in are found in much higher levels in organic foods. Do we see the correlation here?

Other studies have looked at vitamin levels of food plants treated with certain pesticides. They showed that application of some pesticides would significantly lower the vitamin levels in the plants they were applied to. This is different than the notion that plants raised with chemicals are low in nutrients because the soil is depleted. This shows that chemicals actually reduce the amount of nutrients in plants after application. The nutrients most often affected are vitamin C, beta carotene, and the B vitamins. These nutrients are vitally necessary for the body to withstand the onslaught of chemical toxins. Vitamin C has been well documented by two-time Nobel laureate Linus Pauling to prevent and treat cancers. Beta carotene has been shown to be astimulant of the immune system, and is sometimes able to prevent lung cancer.

When they studied organic food for mineral levels, the researchers also looked for the amount of the heavy metals aluminum, cadmium, lead and mercury. Aluminum has been implicated for years in the development ofAlzheimer's disease. It's content in organic food averaged 40% less that in commercial foods. Lead toxicity, which has been in the news a lot lately, can adversely affect our children's' IQ. It averaged 29% lower in organic foods. Mercury, which can cause neurologic damage, averaged 25% lower in organic foods.

Besides the lower levels of heavy metals, there are the chemical residues themselves. The big question is whether or not the accumulation of pesticide residues in non-organic foods is a real health concern or not. According to an ongoing EPA study of fat samples taken from surgeries and autopsies across the country, we are all loaded with chemical residues. Similar studies done on other countries all show the same results.

The clearest studies that we have about pesticide residues and disease are those looking at breast cancer. In the last few years there have been a series of studies, each building upon the other, looking at the level of DDT, DDE, and PCB in men and women. They have very clearly shown that chemical residues in the serum and fat cells greatly increase the risk of breast and prostate cancer. Since these cancers are major killers in this country, it is reasonable to say that avoidance of pesticide residues in food (the only known route of exposure to DDT in this country, since we no longer use it to spray for mosquitoes) could save numerous lives and reduce our health care cost dramatically. Let’s not even go into the impact that Genetically Modified Foods are having on our health.

US introduces new weapon to disperse crowds

Microwave beam weapon to disperse crowds
From New Scientist Print Edition

Tests of a controversial weapon that is designed to heat people's skin with a microwave beam have shown that it can disperse crowds. But critics are not convinced the system is safe.

Last week, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in New Mexico finished testing the system on human volunteers. The Air Force now wants to use this Active Denial Technology (ADT), which it says is non-lethal, for peacekeeping or riot control at "relatively long range" - possibly from low-flying aircraft. ADT uses a 2-metre dish to create a narrow beam of microwaves that can be scanned across a crowd or even aimed at individuals. AFRL is using infrared photography to analyse the heating effect on the volunteers' bodies.

AFRL says that the 3-millimetre wavelength radiation penetrates only 0.3 millimetres into the skin, rapidly heating the surface above the 45 °C pain threshold. At 50 °C, they say the pain reflex makes people pull away automatically in less than a second - it's said to feel like fleetingly touching a hot light bulb. Someone would have to stay in the beam for 250 seconds before it burnt the skin, the lab says, giving "ample margin between intolerable pain and causing a burn".

Little data

But critics question the AFRL's claims that the weapon's undisclosed exposure levels are safe. John Pike of think tank Globalsecurity.org fears that the beam power needed to scare people may be too close to the level that would injure them. Air Force scientists helped set the present skin safety threshold of 10 milliwatts per square centimetre in the early 1990s, when little data was available, says Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News.

That limit covers exposure to steady fields for several minutes to an hour - but heating a layer of skin 0.3 mm thick to 50 °C in just one second requires much higher power and may pose risks to the cornea, which is more sensitive than skin. A study published last year in the journal Health Physics showed that exposure to 2 watts per square centimetre for three seconds could damage the corneas of rhesus monkeys. Generation Y's goal? Wealth and fame

Ask young people about their generation's top life goals and the answer is clear and resounding: They want to be rich and famous.
By Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY

"When you open a celebrity magazine, it's all about the money and being rich and famous," says 22-year-old Cameron Johnson of Blacksburg, Va. "The TV shows we watch — anything from The Apprentice where the intro to the show is the 'money song' — to Us Weekly magazine where you see all the celebrities and their $6 million homes. We see reality TV shows with Jessica and Nick living the life. We see Britney and Paris. The people we relate to outside our friends are those people."

Eighty-one percent of 18- to 25-year-olds surveyed in a Pew Research Center poll released today said getting rich is their generation's most important or second-most-important life goal; 51% said the same about being famous.

In an annual survey of college freshmen by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California-Los Angeles, 2005 data show that money is much more on their minds than in the past. The percentage who say it is "essential" or "very important" to be "very well off financially" grew from 41.9% in 1967 to 74.5% in 2005; "developing a meaningful philosophy of life" dropped in importance from 85.8% in 1967 to 45% in 2005.

Majority of US women living without spouse

For the first time, a majority of American women are living without a spouse, media reported.
KNN-Dimona

The New York Times, which based its report on an analysis of census results, said 51 percent of women in 2005 reported living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

"Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits," the newspaper said.

It said that several factors are behind the shift including women marrying at a later age and living with partners for more often and for longer periods. Women are also living longer as widows and once divorced, often opt to stay single, the report said.

According to the Census figures, only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, compared with 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women. Thompson Stops Frazier!

The report from the Philadelphia family!
Submitted by Ahtur Ammioz
KNN D.C.

Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson (23-1, 17 KOs) continued to put the junior middleweight division on notice with an impressive sixth round stoppage of Robert "Pushup" Frazier (31-8-4, 15 KOs).

Thompson, of North Philadelphia, entered the ring to the rhythmic sound of drums and went to work right in the first round with nice movement behind a stiff jab that allowed him to throw a few hooks to the body, followed by rights up top. Frazier returned fire with several lighter flurries.

Thompson finally put Frazier to the canvas in round six with a right hook, left combination just above the beltline. Frazier was able to get to his feet by the count of eight but was withering quickly. Thompson continued the assault with a steady dose of combinations as Frazier could only hold on until the bell sounded to end round six. Frazier's corner had seen enough and called a halt to the bout to prevent further damage.

Thompson gave warning to the champions in the division. “Whoever you (the fans) think I should fight, I will fight. It is not about can I fight. It is about whom I fight. I don't care who it is, whether it's Shane (Mosley) or Oscar (De La Hoya). I am training right and they are going to have problems. I can guarantee it!”

FDA approves the use of cloned animals to make food.

KNN Cleveland

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration tentatively approved the use of cloned animals to make food. Natural reproduction is giving way to artificial reproduction. And with the new era comes a new question: Which came first, the steer or the steak?

The draft risk assessment finds that meat and milk from clones of adult cattle, pigs and goats, and their offspring, are as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals... "Based on FDA's analysis of hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and other studies on the health and food composition of clones and their offspring, the draft risk assessment has determined that meat and milk from clones and their offspring are as safe as food we eat every day," said Stephen F. Sundlof, D.V.M., Ph.D., director of FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. "Cloning poses no unique risks to animal health when compared to other assisted reproductive technologies currently in use in U.S. agriculture."

What Diabetes is and how food can affect it?

By Dr. Baruch

Active body cells need energy and they get it from carbohydrate foods that are broken down into glucose. (The fuel that keeps our bodies running is sugar. Doctors call it glucose). Soon after we eat, glucose pours into the bloodstream and is carried to individual cells throughout the body. Before it can enter these cells, however, it requires the presence of a hormone called insulin. And therein lies the problem. Diabetes is essentially too much sugar in the blood. It happens
when your pancreas (most of the pancreas is engaged in producing enzymes needed by the digestive system, but dotted within the gland are thousands of small groups of cells. These are the islets of Langerhans, and it is here that the insulin is produced.) Produces no
insulin or insufficient or ineffective insulin, the hormone that stimulates cells to absorb and store glucose (sugar). If the insulin can’t handle glucose, blood sugar levels rise abnormally, causing much havoc, including excessive urination and thirst, weakness, fatigue and cardiovascular and kidney damage.

There are 2 main types of diabetes. The more severe, less common Type I diabetes strikes children and sometimes young adults, usually under age 35. Since cells of the pancreas that secret insulin R gradually destroyed, presumably by some sort of immune reaction, Type I diabetics must take insulin injections because their pancreas produces virtually no insulin. Type I is also known as insulin – dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes. A far wider threat to most Americans is Type II diabetes, which almost develops after age 40. Ironically, people with this type diabetes often have lots of insulin, but it doesn’t perform well because cells are "resistant" to it. Such diabetes, also called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset, accounts for 90% of all cases, afflicting some 20 million Americans, perhaps as many as ½ who do not know they have it. Since what U eat has a major impact on blood sugar and insulin, food is a prime player in triggering and controlling diabetes.

Here are some ways food can affect diabetes:

· Overloads of certain foods that cause sharp spurts of blood sugar put burdens on insulin; restricting such foods keeps blood sugar levels more even.

· Certain foods contain compounds that stimulate the activity and potency of insulin or act directly to regulate blood sugar.

· Antioxidants in food may ward off free radical attacks on beta cells that worsen inflammation and other damage. Such antioxidants also counteract oxidation of diabetes’ LDL cholesterol, which is more susceptible to harm than that of non-diabetic individuals. Type II diabetics R 2 to 3 times more vulnerable to heart disease than non-diabetics.

· Especially intriguing is the prospect that the onset of Type I diabetes may be fostered by very complex delayed "allergic reactions" to food constituents, such as proteins in milk. (" It’s incorrect to say that sugar causes diabetes. The real cause is insufficient or ineffective insulin – the hormone that controls how the body metabolizes sugar To blame sugar is to put the cart before the horse") Dr. Gerald Bernstein, American Diabetes Association)

Specific conditions can result:

Ø Retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy is a serious eye disease that can result in blindness. In fact, diabetic retinopathy is still the leading cause of blindness in the US. One in 20 Type 1 and one in 15 Type 2 diabetics develop retinopathy The development of laser therapy will probably reduce the prevalence of diabetes – induced blindness. However, laser therapy is milder forms of retinopathy since the occasional side effects (hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and visual field loss) may outweigh the benefits.

Ø Nephropathy. (Kidney Disease) Kidney disease due to diabetes is a common complication and a leading cause of death in diabetes. Like the other long – term complications, good blood glucose control goes a long way in reducing the risk of diabetic nephropathy. In addition to monitoring blood sugar levels, periodic monitoring of a diabetic patient’s kidney function (blood urea nitrogen, uric, creatinine, and creatinine clearance) is important.

Ø Atherosclerosis. This hardening of the arteries leads to damage and blockage in the vessels that supply blood it the heart, brain and legs. The result can be heart attacks, strokes and poor circulation. Many diabetics circulation is so poor that they have serial amputations of
feet, toes, knees and legs.

Ø Neuropathy. Nerve damage to the extremities can cause pain and numbness in the hands and feet. Many diabetics cannot feel their feet, and injuries as simple as a stubbed toe can lead to serious infections that are difficult to treat.

Ø Sexual dysfunction. Many male diabetics experience an inability to sustain an erection because of damage to the small vessels in the groin.

Ø Infections. Especially common are yeast infections and other fungal infections, including jock itch, ringworm and athlete’s foot.

When U look at the list of what diabetes can do to U over the long term, it makes sense to treat it if U have it. Some populations have a tendency toward diabetes: African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians American and Pacific Islanders. Woman who develops diabetes during pregnancy is another article in which I don’t have at hand at present. - Doesn’t the above population affected list look suspicious?

WARNING SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Insulin-dependent (Type I) diabetes can cause: Frequent urination Excessive thirst or hunger Sudden weight loss Weakness and fatigue Irritability Nausea and vomiting. Non insulin-Dependent (Type II) diabetes can cause: Any of the insulin-dependent symptoms or signs Blurred vision or changes in vision Tingling or numbness in the legs, feet or fingers Slow healing of cuts Frequent skin infections or itchy skin and drowsiness. Although the common theme is that there is no cure for diabetes, the other less popular theme and less financially rewarding for the medical establishment is that there is a path to total and complete recovery. With some very simple lifestyle changes you can control the disease and prevent further complications. Ultimately, you can completely recover.

Diet pill makers fined millions for false claims

Marketers of popular weight-loss drugs misled consumers, FTC says
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday fined the marketers of four weight loss pills $25 million for making false advertising claims ranging from rapid weight loss to reducing the risk of cancer.

The FTC investigated a variety of claims made — including rapid weight loss and reduction in the risk of osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and even cancer, Majoras noted. Fines were levied against marketers of Xenadrine EFX, One A Day Weight Smart, CortiSlim and TrimSpa.

Placebo more effective - Majoras cautioned the estimated 70 million Americans trying to lose weight not to turn to pills.“You’re not going to find weight loss in a bottle of pills,” she said.
She said the FTC investigation found that the marketers of Xenadrine had a study that said those who took a placebo actually lost more weight than those taking the pill.

“They not only didn’t have studies to support the claim, they actually had a study that went the other way,” she said. Some of the products marketed their claims through infomercials or celebrity endorsements. Anna Nicole Smith, for example, has endorsed TrimSpa. “Testimonials from individuals are not a substitute for science,” Majoras said. “And that’s what Americans need to understand.” See:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16467558/wid/11915773?GT1=8921

What is the Holy Jerusalem Writers Conference?

Dr. Avimeleck spoke about “What is the Holy Jerusalem Writers Conference”? He shared with the audience that the purpose of the conference was to eradicate ignorance worldwide and to sound an alarm that truth had returned to the planet and the people again.

He said that Prince S.B. Yehuda, world famous historian, spiritual biblical archeologist, and hermeneutic expert in 1980 at Dimona Israel, Northeat Africa, founded the Holy Jerusalem Writes Conference. It is to his honor that we continue this legacy of dedication to intellectual scholarship and perfection.

Minister Malahk speaks on “Posturing the African Edenic Century”

Min Malahk shared with the audience that 1966 (the year of the vision of Ben Ammi) was the beginning of the African Edenic Century. He read from a book tilted “The Wise Men – Six friends and the World they made”. He drew many comparisons between how the best and brightest of the Euro-Gentile world created their world and how the best and brightest amongst us will create and have created the New World. Min Malahk’s presentation was very informative, uplifting, and motivational. It was a call to action to all of those who truly see that a change is needed in today’s world.

Divine Inner-Attainment

Ahk Dahveed (of the Last Poets) and Akote Elaneet accompanied by Ahk Kazakiyah-Dimona gave a performance at the opening ceremonies of The Holy Jerusalem Writers Conference. They performed five very moving and uplifting poetic selections. Note: Inner-Attainment as opposed to entertainment is a term coined in the 60’s by Jason Benning, and adopted by his friend Dahveed to apply to all art aimed at helping the participants/audience to grow spiritually.

Saddam Hussein executed, ending era in Iraq

NBC News and news services

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein struggled briefly after American military guards handed him over to Iraqi executioners before dawn Saturday. But as his final moments approached and masked executioners slipped a black cloth and noose around his neck, he grew calm. In a final moment of defiance, he refused a hood to cover his eyes.

Hours after Saddam faced the same fate he was accused of inflicting on countless thousands during a quarter-century of ruthless power, Iraqi state television showed grainy video of what it said was his body, the head uncovered and the neck twisted at a sharp angle.

Witnesses to the execution told NBC News’ Richard Engel that they were cheering around the body of Saddam after the hanging — three years after the deposed president was hauled from a hole in the ground by pursuing U.S. forces. See: Saddam Hussein Executed

Pioneering study shows richest two percent own half world wealth

Submitted By MelindaBA

The richest 2% of adults in the world own more than half of global household wealth according to a path-breaking study released by the Helsinki-based World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University (UNU-WIDER).

The most comprehensive study of personal wealth ever undertaken also reports that the richest 1% of adults alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10% of adults accounted for 85% of the world total. In contrast, the bottom half of the world adult population owned barely 1% of global wealth. The research finds that assets of $2,200 per adult placed a household in the top half of the world wealth distribution in the year 2000.

To be among the richest 10% of adults in the world required $61,000 in assets, and more than $500,000 was needed to belong to the richest 1%, a group which — with 37 million members worldwide — is far from an exclusive club. The UNU-WIDER study is the first of its kind to cover all countries in the world and all major components of household wealth, including financial assets and debts, land, buildings and other tangible property. Singer James Brown dies at 73

Associated Press

ATLANTA - James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured “Godfather of Soul,” whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Born in poverty in Barnwell, S.C., in 1933, he was abandoned as a 4-year-old to the care of relatives and friends and grew up on the streets of Augusta, Ga., in an “ill-repute area,” as he once called it. There he learned to wheel and deal.

“I wanted to be somebody,” Brown said.

By the eighth grade in 1949, Brown had served 3½ years in Alto Reform School near Toccoa, Ga., for breaking into cars. While there, he met Bobby Byrd, whose family took Brown into their home. Byrd also took Brown into his group, the Gospel Starlighters. Soon they changed their name to the Famous Flames and their style to hard R&B. n January 1956, King Records of Cincinnati signed the group, and four months later “Please, Please, Please” was in the R&B Top Ten. Benefits of Laughter

Submitted By MelindaBA

Extensive research on 'laughter therapy' did not begin until after the New England Journal of Medicine published an article by Norman Cousins in 1976. Later, in 1979, this article became the first chapter of his book, 'Anatomy of an Illness.' In it he explained how he was diagnosed in 1964 with ankylosing spondylitis (also known as spondylitis, AS, or Bechterew Disease). The disease usually results in acute inflammation of the spine and can affect other areas of the body as well. Norman Cousins' case was so severe that he was given a one in five hundred chance of recovery and a few months to live.

Realizing that negative thoughts and attitudes can result in illness, he reasoned that positive thoughts and attitudes may have the opposite effect. So he left the hospital and checked into a hotel where he took mega doses of vitamin C and watched humorous movies and shows, including 'Candid Camera' and the Marx Brothers. He found that ten minutes of boisterous laughter resulted in at least two hours of pain-free sleep. He continued his routine until he recovered. Thus, he proved that laughter is the best medicine, and pointed the way to mind-body medicine.

William Fry, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Stanford University Medical School and expert on health and laughter, reports the average kindergarten student laughs 300 times a day. Yet, adults average just 17 laughs a day. Why the difference? Are we too uptight, too tense? Do we take life too seriously? Isn't it time we learned how to relax? We don't stop laughing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop laughing. So, if we want to fly like the angels and share in their happiness, we'll have to follow their example and take ourselves lightly.

Our five senses are not enough for ideal living. We need to use our sixth sense: our sense of humor. Humor isn't about merely telling jokes; it's the way we view the world. We can be sincere about life without taking it so seriously. We can laugh about our mistakes and pain. Louis Kronenberger explains: "Humor simultaneously wounds and heals, indicts and pardons, diminishes and enlarges; it constitutes inner growth at the expense of outer gain, and those who posses and honestly practice it make themselves more through a willingness to make themselves less.

"The brilliant American humorist, James Thurber (1894-1961), described humorists as follows: "The wit makes fun of other persons; the satirist makes fun of the world; the humorist makes fun of himself, but in so doing, he identifies himself with people - that is, people everywhere, not for the purpose of taking them apart, but simply revealing their true nature." The wellspring of laughter is not happiness, but pain, stress, and suffering. Socrates pointed this out when he taught, "The comic and the tragic lie inseparably close, like light and shadow." So, we should be thankful for our suffering, for without it there would be nothing to laugh at! When we laugh at our woes, they dissolve, or at least become bearable, so that we arrive at peace and happiness. As the pragmatic philosopher and psychologist, William James (1842-1910), said, "We don't laugh because we're happy, we are happy because we laugh.

"What's the reason behind this article? Simply to point out the benefits of laughter are too numerous to ignore. Now is the time to resolve that we will consciously make an effort to laugh frequently throughout the day. Of course, as we do so, we will laugh with people - not at them. We will laugh at what people do, not at what people are. We will laugh not only to lighten our burdens, but those of everyone we meet.

The many benefits of laughter

1. When you make fun of yourself, you disempower those who would make fun of you and disarm possible confrontations.
2. Laughter dissolves tension, stress, anxiety, irritation, anger, grief, and depression. Like crying, laughter lowers inhibitions, allowing the release of pent-up emotions. After a hearty bout of laughter, you will experience a sense of well-being. Simply put, he who laughs, lasts. After all, if you can laugh at it, you can live with it. Remember, a person without a sense of humor is like a car without shock absorbers.
3. Medical researches have found that laughter boosts the immune system. The study of how behavior and the brain affect the immune system is called psychoneuroimmunology. Though still in its infancy, this science is rapidly gaining much attention as mankind strives to understand the mind-body relationship.
4. Laughter reduces pain by releasing endorphins that are more potent than equivalent amounts of morphine.
5. Humor helps integrate both hemispheres of our brain, for the left hemisphere is used to decipher the verbal content of a joke while the right hemisphere interprets whether it is funny or not.
6. Laughter adds spice to life.
7. Develop your sense of humor and you will find you are more productive, a better communicator, and a superior team player.
8. Everyone loves someone who can make them laugh. The more you share your sense of humor, the more friends you will have.
9. Humor brings the balance we need to get through the turbulence of life comfortably.
10. Laughter is even equivalent to a small amount of exercise. It massages all the organs of the body, according to Dr. James Walsh.
11. A sense of humor can help you accept the inevitable, rise to any challenge, handle the unexpected with ease, and come out of any difficulty smiling.
The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed. Don't wait until you are sick before you begin practicing laughter therapy. Start today by renting comedy classics from your video store, borrowing humorous books from the library, attending comedy clubs or watching comics on TV, and exchanging jokes with family members, friends, and coworkers. If you are visiting someone in the hospital, why not bring funny greeting cards and humorous books instead of flowers?
I'll end on a personal note. Every time I'm out on a cloudy day with a group of friends, I'm the first person to know when it starts to rain. Do you know why? Because I'm bald!

Discussions at UVI spotlight local reparations effort

By FIONA STOKES-VI DAILY NEWS

ST. CROIX - Discussions on reparations for ancestors of slaves living in the U.S. Virgin Islands continued during the weekend at the University of the Virgin Islands. The African-Caribbean Reparations & Resettlement Alliance-sponsored two-day round-table generated lively discussion among the nearly 100 people who attended the event.....Shelley Moorhead, president of ACRRA, was the moderator. He encouraged feedback from the participants, who included students, educators, community members, legislators, politicians, farmers, government leaders, community activists and attorneys.

The group brainstormed about community initiatives, projects and programs and also assigned duties and organizational roles as the list of local organizations participating in the group's efforts expanded to close to 30. The group also nominated a number of individuals from throughout the territory to serve as advisers, team leaders and members on various projects that fall under headings of education, reparation and restoration.

Moorhead said he was overwhelmed by the turnout and the caliber of participants as ACRRA strives to shape public opinion of their reparations efforts. "These people here are representatives of groups and organizations," he said. "They represent thousands." Moorhead encouraged the participants to continue to work toward their common goal and to understand that it will take a lot of hard work. But he said it ultimately will pay off. "What you have done here is adjudicate more than 300 years of Virgin Islands history," he said. "These ideas and concepts can remain as such, or we can take our collective energy and create something substantive." See: Discussions at UVI spotlight local reparations effort

WTO Announces Formalized Slavery Model for Africa

US Trade Representative to Africa, Governor of Nigeria Central Bank weigh in at Wharton
WTO NEWS: 2006 PRESS RELEASES
Submitted by Ahk Eitai-KNN Cleveland

Philadelphia - At a Wharton Business School conference on business in Africa, World Trade Organization representative Hanniford Schmidt announced the creation of a WTO initiative for "full private stewardry of labor" for the parts of Africa that have been hardest hit by the 500 years of Africa's free trade with the West.

The initiative will require Western companies doing business in some parts of Africa to own their workers outright. Schmidt recounted how private stewardship has been successfully applied to transport, power, water, traditional knowledge, and even the human genome. The WTO's "full private stewardry" program will extend these successes to (re)privatize humans themselves.

"Full, untrammelled stewardry is the best available solution to African poverty, and the inevitable result of free-market theory," Schmidt told more than 150 attendees. Schmidt acknowledged that the stewardry program was similar in many ways to slavery, but explained that just as "compassionate conservatism" has polished the rough edges on labor relations in industrialized countries, full stewardry, or "compassionate slavery," could be a similar boon to developing ones.

"This is what free trade's all about," said Schmidt. "It's about the freedom to buy and sell anything—even people." See: WTO Announces Formalized Slavery Model for Africa

Kids With High IQs Grow Up to Be Vegetarians

As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests
By Steven Reinberg - HealthDay Reporter
Yahoo News

As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.

British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.

"Brighter people tend to have healthier dietary habits," concluded lead author Catharine Gale, a senior research fellow at the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre of the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital.

Recent studies suggest that vegetarianism may be associated with lower cholesterol, reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This might explain why children with high IQs tend to have a lower risk of heart disease in later life.

The report is published in the Dec. 15 online edition of the British Medical Journal.

"We know from other studies that brighter children tend to behave in a healthier fashion as adults -- they're less likely to smoke, less likely to be overweight, less likely to have high blood pressure and more likely to take strenuous exercise," Gale said. "This study provides further evidence that people with a higher IQ tend to have a healthier lifestyle." See: Kids with high IQ
