California-Killer heat wave overwhelms coroners’ offices

Death toll at 132 in California, weather killing hundreds of livestock - Associated Press

FRESNO, Calif. - At least 132 deaths are likely linked to a nearly two-week heat wave in California, according to county coroner's offices. The big jump in the death count came primarily from Los Angeles County and the Central Valley counties of Merced and Stanislaus, where coroners struggled to keep up. The vast majority of those deaths statewide have been elderly people whose bodies don't cope as well in the heat. In Fresno County’s morgue, the walk-in freezer was stuffed with bodies, with some piled on top of others, said Coroner Loralee Cervantes. Dr. Baruch Ben Yehudah of the community’s Washington, D.C.-based company, Plantroleum, is visiting Dimona to demonstrate the viability of this technology. Accidents and suicide are the leading killers in men aged 15 to 34, while deaths from illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and chronic liver disease rise sharply in 35-44-year-olds. “In every country there is an excess of male deaths due to potentially avoidable reasons. The main causes of death are those that are more or less directly attributable to lifestyle and risk taking,” said Alan White of Leeds Metropolitan University in England. ST. THOMAS - The V.I. government is sending representatives to Ghana this week to participate in the country's Emancipation Day celebrations. The group hopes to restore ties to the West African nation and further explore the issue of reparations. From Sunday to July 30, Ghana's liberation commemorations will take place in the capital city of Accra. The official delegation includes Dr. Carlyle Corbin, Minister of State for External Affairs, and Myron Jackson, director of the V.I. State Historic Preservation Office, who left Thursday. Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen is scheduled to join them next week. Shelley Moorhead, president of the St. Croix-based African-Caribbean Reparations and Resettlement Alliance, is helping to coordinate the visit between local officials and those in Ghana. "The participation of the delegation in our event this year certainly signifies the renewal of ties between the Virgin Islands and Ghana," said Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Ghana's minister of tourism. Days after tsunami earthquake hits Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A strong earthquake caused tall buildings to sway in the Indonesian capital Wednesday, sending panicked residents fleeing to the streets just days after a deadly tsunami struck main island of Java. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The 6.0-magnitude quake was centered 25 miles beneath the Sunda strait, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site, and struck 90 miles southwest of Jakarta. Suharjono, head of the earthquake division at Jakarta's meteorological agency, told Metro TV that based on the initial estimate of Wednesday's quake strength, it was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami. But he urged people to be on guard. On Monday, a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.7-earthquake slammed into Java's southern coast, killing more than 530 people. A series of strong aftershocks have rattled the region since then.

The attractive, colorful and comfortable designs were originally sold as part of fundraising efforts by the Black Hebrews, who began marketing the clothes on trips to the United States. The beautifully embroidered designs are made by 25 members of the Black Hebrew community and are sold not only in the US, but also in several African countries and to members of the African business and diplomatic communities here in Israel.

WASHINGTON - If current trends hold, tobacco will kill a billion people this century, 10 times the toll it took in the 20th century, public health officials said Monday.
Tobacco accounts for one in five cancer deaths, or 1.4 million deaths worldwide each year, according to two new reference guides that chart global tobacco use and cancer. Lung cancer remains the major cancer among the 10.9 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year, according to the Cancer Atlas.

NEW YORK - A four-story building housing doctors’ offices collapsed and burned in an apparent gas explosion Monday after what witnesses described as a thunderous blast that rocked an upscale neighborhood just off Madison Avenue.
At least 15 people were injured, including at least six firefighters, the Fire Department said. One of the injured was the doctor who owned the building.
Fire Department Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said officials suspect the doctor, who was in critical condition, might have caused a natural gas leak in a suicide attempt. WASHINGTON (July 6) - America's appetite for organic food is so strong that supply just can't keep up with demand. Organic products still have only a tiny slice, about 2.5 percent, of the nation's food market. But the slice is expanding at a feverish pace. Growth in sales of organic food has been 15 percent to 21 percent each year, compared with 2 percent to 4 percent for total food sales.
Organic means food is grown without bug killer, fertilizer, hormones, antibiotics or biotechnology. Mainstream supermarkets, eyeing the success of organic retailers such as Whole Foods, have rushed to meet demand. The Kroger Co., Safeway Inc. and SuperValu Inc., which owns Albertson's LLC, are among those selling their own organic brands. DETROIT - Free-agent center Ben Wallace is leaving the Detroit Pistons to sign with the Chicago Bulls, a person within the NBA said Monday.
The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because NBA free agents can’t officially sign contracts until July 12, said the Pistons offered Wallace a four-year contract worth about $50 million. That would have made him the highest-paid player on the team next season with a salary of $11.5 million. He will reportedly sign with the Bulls for $52 million over four years. After a heartbreaking loss to the Mean Judeans last week, Penticon came into Game 2 looking to even the series and did so handily. Pitcher Ami Baran, who missed the first game, shined on the mound and with the glove for Penticon on the way to a 5-2 win Sunday night that forced a third-and-deciding game on Tuesday night at the Baptist Village in Petah Tikvah.
"His pitching and a solid defense won the game," men's national team coach Richard Duffy said. "Offense is good but it's defense that wins games. The second baseman and the outfield were outstanding." Both teams came out ready to fight with the Mean Judeans bringing in three busloads of friends and family from Dimona to cheer on their side. They brought with them drums and pom-poms and cheered loudly from the warm-ups.

"Absolutely we are going to win tonight," a confident Bat-el Bat-Yisroel, wife of Horalio ben Yehuda, said. "My next door neighbor is playing - everyone knows each other in the whole community. If we do lose tonight we will be back here again on Tuesday cheering." That will have to be the case, as Penticon, despite only attracting 20 or so fans, was undeterred. The Mean Judeans went three up, three down in the top of the first and Penticon came back swinging in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs. In the third, Baran made his only slip-up of the game, throwing a wild pitch that started a two-run rally for the Judeans. The comeback was halted as a Yarone fly ball hit was caught in center field for the third out, leaving Elyaeed stranded on base. In the bottom of the fourth, third baseman Natanel Levenson singled and advanced to second and then third base on two wild pitches by Yarone. Levenson scored on a Ben Fleitman ground ball to make it score 4-2. The Mean Judeans got a bit of momentum in the sixth, with Yarone bunting his way aboard before Ahkazyah drew a walk. But Yehudah grounded out to first and Ovade made out to end the threat. Dan Marcus replaced Brian Aron in the bottom of the sixth, which proved to be a very good move. Marcus hit a triple into left field and then scored on the next play when the right fielder dropped Sam Goldberg's pop-up, putting Goldberg on second and giving Penticon a commanding 5-2 lead late in the game.

The Judean fans were on their feet dancing and chanting "that's alright that's ok we're gonna win it anyway," as Baran took the mound for the top of the seventh. But Ben Koliyah flied out to center, and though N. Emmanuel hit a line-drive single and was replaced by pinch runner Yohanatan, the Mean Judeans would get no further. Mean Judean fans were a bit despondent at the loss but shouted out "the championship is ours!" as Penticon walked back to the bench. "Goose" Gillett, the league's secretary general; the coach and pitcher for the Tigers; and the game's umpire, said before the first pitch that "it's always an intense game" when the Mean Judeans play and on his way off the field after it was over he concluded "that was rough." In the dugout, the Penticon players congratulated each other and were looking forward to Tuesday's championship game. "We did expect to win but we knew it would be tough," said Hirsch. "We feel good and we are going to take it on Tuesday." Despite his confidence, Hirsch remained humble when speaking of his opponents. "[The Mean Judeans] can always come out and play. It's not over until the fat lady sings."

Food labels don't stop unhealthy eating habits-Many buy products knowing they're filled with fats, sugars, poll finds-July 2, 2002-Asociated Press

People check the labels on food at the grocery store, but it doesn’t stop them from eating what they want, an AP-Ipsos poll found. Nearly 80 percent of Americans say they check food labels, looking for things like fat and calories and sugars. But 44 percent of people admit that even when the news is not good, they buy the food. Two-thirds of Americans weigh too much. Why do they bother reading labels? “I don’t know, force of habit. I want to see what I’m getting myself into,” says Loren Cook, 39, of Marysville, Wash. “It doesn’t make my buying decisions for me. It’s mostly a curiosity factor.” The AP-Ipsos survey of 1,003 adults, conducted May 30 to June 1, found:

Women check labels more frequently than men, 65 percent versus 51 percent. They also place more importance on nutrition content, 82 percent to 64 percent.

Married men are more likely to check labels than unmarried men, 76 percent to 65 percent.

Younger people are more likely to look at calories on food labels: 39 percent of people between 18 and 29 said they look at calories first.

Even so, 60 percent of younger people were more likely to buy foods that are bad for them even after checking the label.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Tammy Fultz, 45, thinks labels are good. She checks whenever she shops for groceries and avoids artery-clogging trans fat. “But none of that really matters,” says Fultz, who lives in Independence, Ky. “In the end, you still eat way more than you should and exercise way less than you should.”

Bamdu Station Performs in D. C. This Weekend

The second of three free Weekend's Weekends summer concerts hosted by The Post and the Weekend section, featuring a variety of music from top local talent in our community, is Friday. Tonight's reggae bill features Bambu Station, Proverbs and S.T.O.R.M. Reggae Band. The concerts are at Carter Barron Amphitheatre in cooperation with the National Park Service/Rock Creek Park. Bambu Station dates back a decade, when vocalist Jalani Horton of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands moved to Washington, but the band didn't jell until a few years later with the arrival of drummer Andy Llanos and guitarist Tuff Lion, both from St. Croix. According to Horton: "We came for different reasons -- some of us went to college, others to trade school. We were not a band when we left home, but once we got here and settled, we got together as a band."

Last year, the band traveled to Israel for the New World Passover Festival in Dimona, put on by the African Hebrew Israelite Nation of Jerusalem, a small religious group whose members believe they are descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. (The band will be going back next year for the group's 40th anniversary of settling in Israel.) "It's not that someone sent for us," Horton explains. "There was an opportunity for us to appear at the festival, and we paid our way to go. And from that one festival, three other shows in Israel materialized. "We push to create opportunities for ourselves," Horton says, adding: "We would rather play across the world for the same money that we play a small club in Adams Morgan for. In that way, we get a chance to enrich our experiences, our lives and be exposed to the world, let the world hear what we're doing instead of just waiting for a big label to find us. We're not trying to be found. We are trying to let people know that we exist so we can start that communication with the ones we feel would appreciate what we're doing."

Dimona takes lead in softball finals

Ovade Ben-Israel's game-winning, basesloaded, one-out single over a drawn-in outfield in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Dimona Mean Judeans a 12-11 victory over Penticon in Game 1 of the best-of-three Israel Softball Association finals on Sunday. Golan Halley started for Penticon, whose regular starting pitcher, Ami Baran, was in the US observing potential players for an Israeli Olympic Softball team. Halley injured his shoulder in the first inning and Dimona took a 6-2 lead.
Relief pitcher Benzi Fleightman came in and the sharp Penticon defense kept Dimona off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Penticon fought back, tied the score in the top of the seventh and then held Dimona in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extra innings. Game 2 is scheduled for 9 p.m. Sunday at Baptist Village.

Low Iron Could Help Spur Baldness

(HealthDay News) -- Could iron deficiency be key to baldness?
The answer is yes, according to researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, who reviewed scientific literature on the connection published over the past 40 years. "If doctors can understand fully the relationship between iron deficiency and hair loss, then they can help people regrow hair more effectively," study leader Dr. Wilma Bergfeld, head of clinical research in the department of dermatology, said in a prepared statement. "We believe that iron deficiency may be related to many forms of hair loss and that people may need higher levels of iron stores than previously thought to regrow hair." The review of data suggests that iron deficiency may be linked to several of the most common kinds of hair loss. However, there is not enough evidence to suggest universal screening for iron deficiency in hair-loss patients and further research is required, the researchers said. The findings appear in the May issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Iron deficiency is the world's most common nutritional deficiency. It can be caused by inadequate dietary intake of iron, excessive menstrual bleeding, and other forms of blood loss. Treatment includes adequate dietary intake of iron and, when appropriate, iron supplements. Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic routinely screen for iron deficiency in patients with hair loss. If iron deficiency is detected and treated in the early stages, patients may be able to grow hair more effectively, the researchers said. Second day of storms hits Midwest hard Wind and rain wreak havoc on Ohio, Illinois. By Thomas J. Sheeran, Associated Press

Severe storms pounded the upper Midwest with strong winds and heavy rain for a second day Thursday and were blamed for the death of a firefighter who tried to rescue two teenagers from rising floodwaters.
Al Anderson Jr., 47, was trying to get to the teens, whose Jeep had gotten stuck, when he drowned in Wellington, Ohio, about 40 miles southwest of Cleveland, authorities said. The teens were rescued. Near Logan, Ohio, nine people were injured Thursday afternoon when lightning struck a shelter during a charity run, according to the State Highway Patrol. One had life-threatening injuries. In Indiana, strong thunderstorms prompted numerous storm and flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service and left behind widespread reports of damaged homes, downed trees and blown over semi-trailers.
A lightning strike in Indianapolis sent six firefighter trainees to a hospital, although officials said none of the injuries appeared serious. The site of the U.S. track and field championships was evacuated twice as storms moved through the downtown area.
On Wednesday, 5 inches of rain fell in a five-hour span in the Toledo, Ohio, area, 56 mph wind gusts and golf ball-size hail pelted northern Ohio, and tornadoes were reported in Michigan, the National Weather Service said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Torrential rain soaked the U.S. capital, toppled a century-old elm tree at the White House, closed the home of the Declaration of Independence and kept tax collectors from work on Monday.
With as much as 7 inches of rain falling since Sunday in an East Coast deluge, flooded basements or power outages forced the Internal Revenue Service, Commerce Department, Justice Department and the National Archives to close. The federal government told its 280,000 area workers they could take leave if they were unable to get to work. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MVSU officially signed on with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Monday to develop the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Conflict Resolution Center in Ivrea, Italy. Once approved by the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning, the Conflict Resolution Center will combine educational opportunities found through MVSU with instructional course material on non-violent conflict resolution.Courses through MVSU and the Conflict Resolution Center are expected to begin in 2007. "This agreement truly allows Mississippi Valley State University to move into the international community," said MVSU's president, Lester C. Newman. Ben Ammi Ben- leader of the groups that left the American shores, spoke to online journal Haaretz.com about Eddie Butler- himself with American origins. ''We're always excited about representing Israel,'' Ben Ammi responded, when asked about the community's singer Eddie Butler, who was an enthusiastic envoy of Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest this month.Eddie Butler's song finished in the penultimate postion out of the 24 contestants. This was initially disappointing, however Ben Ammi conceded ''After we considered who won, we knew that the mindset of the people was not ready for the light from Israel.'' In fact, Ben Ammi said that Israel actually emerged as a winner by displaying a unique harmony on stage: ''They (the audience) saw black, they saw white, they saw talent, they saw togetherness, they saw brotherhood. Dimona and Penticon open playoffs with wins - Jerusalem Post Sports

The Dimona Mean Judeans defeated the Galil "Golan Plastic Products" Twisters 16-6 and Penticon downed Ziontours 19-4 in six innings in the first round of the Israel Softball Association playoffs on Sunday night.
The first game at Baptist Village near Petah Tikva featured Dimona, the top A Division team, against the Twisters, the winners of the B Division who defeated the A Division's Tigers for a spot in the playoffs.
Dimona jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first off pitcher Yosi Ajzenwaser, taking advantage of three walks, two errors and Yigahl Ben Israel's key three-run homer. The Twisters settled down and started hitting Dimona pitcher Yaron Ben-Israel, banging out 14, three each by Moshe Hyde and Eitan Milgram, who tripled, but Yaron got the big outs when he needed them, stranding 10 Twisters on base and never allowing the Galileans to get closer than five runs.
For Dimona, Shlomo Ben-Israel was 4-for-4 with three runs, Yigal had three hits and Elyaheed Ben-Israel and Benkie Ben-Israel each tripled.
The second game of each best-of-three series are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Village.

New study confirms experts' suspicions that it's a major factor in troubling trend-ABC News

America's obesity epidemic is definitely driving the nation's type 2 diabetes epidemic, says a new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While other factors play some role in the rapidly increasing number of people with diabetes, obesity is the major factor in the trend, said Linda S. Geiss, lead author of the study, published in the May issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study, based on concrete numbers drawn from the entire country, backs up what experts have long believed, said Geiss, a statistician with the CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation.

"Most incidence studies [of diabetes] have been done on samples that aren't representative of the United States," she said. "These [new] data are nationally representative. On the situation of the Community's improved health, testimony of Emmanuel Ben Yehuda, person responsible for the Community's connection with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "in the 37 years that we are in Israel, we have had just one case of stroke and two cases of cancer. And no one has had a heart attack, and not ever one case of aids. Some medical centers in the U.S. have investigated the lifestyle of our Community and determined that we succeeded to triumph in being victorious over heart disease and problems of high blood pressure because of our healthy lifestyle."

Then what is their secret? According to spokesman Emmanuel, members of the Community eat natural foods, are commanders in doing sports and fasting one day in the week. Every member of the Community is obligated to get a massage or reflexology treatment at least once a month. The children stay away from sweets, the adults don't touch coffee or alcohol and very little usage of salt. The main nutrition comes from soya products, fruits, organic vegetables, grains and almonds.

"All diseases like cancer, aides, and heart disease are born out of the result of bad health habits," explains Emmanuel. "We presented to the African states that in changing your lifestyle, it is possible to cause these diseases to disappear." "We have already hosted African delegations that are requesting to learn how to benefits from our Health Model and we are very proud to be in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health. Dimona, Galil clinch first place in softball

In a busy week of ISA softball, the Dimona Mean Judeans clinched first place in the A Division by destroying the Galil Golan Plastic Products Twisters 17-1. The Twisters, in turn, clinched first place in the B Division by holding on to defeat a feisty Otzma Eilat team 14-13. On Wednesday, Dimona smacked one line drive and ground ball up the middle after another, and the Twisters' defense was sloppy, while fireballer Yaron Ben-Israel held the northerners to three hits. El Yaheed Ben-Israel had three hits and three runs, Ovade Ben-Israel knocked in five runs, Yaron and Emmanuel Ben-Israel each tripled and scored twice for the explosive Dimona offense. Jake Miller batted in the lone Twister run. Also on Sunday, Zion Tours led 4-2 and 6-4 on big hits from Noam Zwilling, Aviv Ya'akov and an inside-thepark homer by Benny Ruggill, but then Dimona pitcher Yaron Ben-Israel, with help from excellent defense, shut the door while his offense mounted a comeback. First baseman Yehuda Ben-Israel made several outstanding plays while going 2-2 at bat, El Yaheed Ben-Israel was outstanding at shortstop and 3-4 at the plate, and Ben Koliyah Ben-Israel had the game-winning RBI.

Efforts to explore Mars are benefiting a Cornish website selling plots of land.

St Austell firm Moonestates.com has been selling off chunks of the moon since 2000, when it bought the UK franchise for "land sales across the solar system" from American businessman Dennis Hope.
But now the announcement by US President George W Bush that the Moon is to be used as a stepping stone for a mission to Mars has excited a flood of interest in Martian property.
One-acre plots, which are soSue Williams from Moonestates said: "Dennis Hope realised there was a loophole in the United Nations Outer Space Treaty of 1967.
"That basically says that no country or government can lay claim to extraterrestrial land, but it forgot to say no person could.
"He basically filed his claim with the United Nations in 1980 and has been selling the land since.
"We've looked into it very carefully and this loophole does exist. Even ex-presidents of the United States Ronald Regan and Jimmy Carter have become land-owners on Mars and the Moon, I believe."
She said there had been much interest in Mars, particularly since Britain's Beagle Two mission and America's Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed.
However, not all of the planet is up for grabs. Dennis Hope said areas would be kept for the benefit of humanity.
Sue Williams said: "Sites of scientific interest have been put aside for all of mankind and Dennis isn't selling those."
But if anyone does buy a plot and wants to visit, they will have to prepare to wrap up warm as the temperatures drop to about -73C at midnight.
They will also have to their own air, as they will not be able to breathe the thin atmosphere.
But some customers have bought the plots as gifts.
Sue Williams said: "We have a lot of people who buy plots of the Moon for their partner.
"They say 'I promised them the earth, but at least I can give them a part of the Moon'."
The British National Space Centre said it was not aware of any complaints about the selling of land on the Moon and on Mars. ld with a deed, constitution, property map, mineral rights and a copy of the original Declaration of Ownership are being sold for about £20.

Type 2 diabetes grows as public health threat

NEW YORK - Every day the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center is busy — with new and returning patients.
Director Dr. Robin Goland says its is a major problem in every hospital.
"Ten percent of patients on a medical service in a hospital have diabetes," she says. "Fifty percent of patients on a vascular surgery service have diabetes." Diabetes is the inability to metabolize sugar properly — so it builds up in the blood. Type 1, a genetic disease that usually strikes in childhood, is not increasing. The big change is with Type 2 — caused partly by obesity.
In just a decade, the number of Americans diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes more than doubled to 14.7 million and the government estimates more than 5 million others have it and don't know it. "These are people that have no opportunity to control the blood sugar, and these are people who find out about the diabetes when they discover a complication," says Dr. Garland. The complications include damage to the entire circulatory system — which in turn can cause heart attacks, blindness, loss of arms and legs, kidney damage and stroke. But it does not have to happen. After David Elkins was diagnosed two years ago, he lost 35 pounds and started exercising regularly. Now his blood sugar is normal.
"It's great to be able to feel like I'm in shape," he says.
A simple blood test can detect whether a person's blood sugar is moving toward diabetic level. Experts recommend that everyone 45 and older, obese or with a family history of diabetes, get the test.

How Long Will America Lead the World?

Much of the concern centers on the erosion of science and technology in the U.S., particularly in education. Eight months ago, the national academies of sciences, engineering and medicine came together to put out a report that argued that the "scientific and technical building blocks of our economic leadership are eroding at a time when many nations are gathering strength." There are some who see the decline of science and technology as part of a larger cultural decay. A country that once adhered to a Puritan ethic of delayed gratification has become one that revels in instant pleasures. We're losing interest in the basics—math, manufacturing, hard work, savings—and becoming a postindustrial society that specializes in consumption and leisure. "More people will graduate in the United States in 2006 with sports-exercise degrees than electrical-engineering degrees," says Immelt. "So, if we want to be the massage capital of the world, we're well on our way." America's problem right now is that it is not really that scared. There is an intelligent debate about these issues among corporate executives, writers and the thin sliver of the public than is informed on these issues. But mainstream America is still unconcerned. Partly this is because these trends are operating at an early stage and somewhat under the surface. Americans do not really know how fast the rest of the world is catching up. Our greatest danger is that when the American public does begin to get scared, they will try to shut down the very features of the country that have made it so successful. They will want to shut out foreign companies, be less welcoming to immigrants and close themselves off from competition and collaboration. Over the past year there have already been growing paranoia on all these fronts. If we go down this path, we will remain a rich country and a stable one. We will be less troubled by the jarring changes that the new world is pushing forward. But like Britain after Queen Victoria's reign, it will be a future of slow, steady national decline. History will happen to us after all.

Gay marriage ban defeated in Senate vote

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, dealing a defeat to President Bush and Republicans who hope to use the measure to energize conservative voters on Election Day.
